One More Time... Before the Blu-ray Disc version... |
Lucasfilm will be liberating the cash from my wallet for one more set of DVDs when the Original Original Trilogy is released this year. But should I even bother? By that time I'll either have Sony's new Blu-ray Disc player, or I'll get the PS3 in november, which also plays Blu-ray Disc.
For those who haven't read my previous blogs, Blu-ray is Sony's next-gen High Definition Disc Format (supported by many movie studios like Fox and Disney) poised to eventually replace DVD. With 6 times the resolution of standard DVDs and high-definition masters of all 6 SW Films at Lucasfilm just waiting to be released, I think the 30th Anniversary of the original Star Wars is the perfect time to release the Blu-ray Disc versions.
But, that's not been announced yet, and probably wouldn't be until next year anyway. In the meantime, we have these "attractively priced" and VERY limited (Only available for three months!) DVDs of the originals coming in September.
What would I do if I were Lucasfilm? I would, of course, release these holy grails of fandom once, just before the new format takes off, because it could be potentially the last chance to sell 'em on that format. And because die-hard fanboys like me that want both versions will snap it up, because there's no way of knowing whether this particular "bonus feature" will show up on the Blu-ray versions. So I thought I wouldn't be buying anymore standard-def DVDs after King Kong, but I suppose now I'll be getting just 3 more...
Where Star Wars is concerned, I suppose I'll always end up with multiple versions of the films on each format I buy into...
