 | Threepwood Memories..... |
Thank you everyone for your kind birthday wishes!
I am in the middle of working on three projects right now, it was nice to have a night to just chill out...
I was reading one of my favorite websites for tech news http://www.slashdot.org and I came across a link to an article about how people got their start in the game industry. http://games.slashdot.org/games/05/08/20/1540252.shtml?tid=8&tid=10 . It made me think back to when I started working back at Lucasfilm Games in 1990. I had such a blast back then working on one of my favorite games, The Secret of Monkey Island. I was 17 when I first started working there as one of the QA Technicians. My job was to sit and play games all day for the programmers(poor me)... The QA group, including myself were the misfits of the building, we were all crammed together in one room, called "The Pit". I think we had all the candy and soft drinks we could ingest, to give us fuel for the hours of playing. One of the great percs was that we were right next door to ILM, and were invited to go to "weeklies" to watch the lastest FX shots on the various films being done there. I must have really liked my job because I think I was commuting at least 120 miles a day to travel from home (still living with my parents....HA! I was 17, cut me some slack!) , then to work, then to night classes at college.....crazy. Mostly, I just remember spending my days on Melee and Monkey Island...beautifully rendered in 256 colors! I met some amazing artists on that game that I still keep in touch with like writer/programmer Tim Shafer http://www.doublefine.com/about.htm and artist Steve Purcell http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Purcell . I stayed at the games division for around a year until I made the big move to Skywalker Ranch...but that is another story.
Has anyone here played Monkey Island?

SW Flashbacks in Monkey Island
Star Wars
#1 When Guybrush lands on Monkey Island, Herman says to him:
"Did you come in ship I saw out there? You're braver than you look".
In Star Wars: A New Hope, Princess Leia says "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought." about the Millennium Falcon when she is leaving the Death Star with Luke and Han.
Added: Sunday, November 29, 1998
#2 When you give the red herring to the troll, he throws his club on the ground. When he wants to pick it up again he opens his hand and "attracts" the club, just like Luke Skywalker.

#3 At the very beginning of Act 2, when Guybrush first walks in to the
cabin, he looks at the screen and says, "I'm Doomed." This strongly
reminded me of C-3PO saying, "We're Doomed" in Star Wars Eps. 4, 5, and
6.
Added: Friday, August 9, 2002
#4 When Guybrush talks to Herman Toothrot for the second time, one of the
things he can say is "My name's Guybrush. I'm here to rescue someone."
This is an obvious reference to Luke Skywalker's greeting to Princess Leia
in Star Wars IV: A New Hope "My name's Luke Skywalker. I'm here to rescue you."

Sadly, "the Pit" is no longer. From the reports I am hearing, the new QA digs at the Presidio are flooded with natural light. I was planning on giving a full report after our division moves to the Presidio in September.

LOL, i never heard of Monkey Island sadly but I'll look it up. And man your darn tootin lucky to play Grievous, Good villain and like Darth Maul he died to fast .......OR DID HE! dun dun dun. Thats one thing with Star Wars you can never be sure if someone dies lol, like Boba Fett for instance. Anyway Matt I'll look up Monkey Island and if i like what I see ill visit my local GameStop. O yeah and Grievous was shorter than I expected. And also thanks I think I'll also look up your Digidesign Pro Tools, and get all that hardware and stuff. Till my Hyperspace Trial ends C YA NEXT TIME.

I have only played The Curse of Monkey Island, and it's one of the greatest games ever made! Everything from "Do you know the name Bobbin Threadbare?" to "I didn't think you could die in LucasArts adventure games." is in there. The Curse is excellent!

The Monkey Island games were the best! It's so great to play a game that challenges your wits and leaves you on the floor laughing at the same time. Disc 2 of Curse of Monkey Island was probably the most fun I've ever had playing a game.
It's great to have you posting here on the blogs. I got to meet you at the Comic Con this year, which was pretty much the highlight of my Star Wars fandom. Amazing audio guy AND the voice of the coolest villian ever? Yeah, you're pretty much my ultimate hero. Thanks for being such an awesome guy!

Mmmm floppy-based videogames! That brings back some suppressed love for the A-drive wonders. All this mention of Monkey Island makes me want to play Castle of the Winds. Too bad there weren't monkeys in that. ^_^
By the way, hi Matthew, I just met you at Toronto comic/fantasy convention thing. I had no idea you would be there, and it was quite a pleasant surprise. I must say you were the nicest guest there, and had I known you harboured such an affection for outdated videogames I might have wasted a little more of your time rambling about King's Quest or some such. (haha) So maybe one day I'll talk to you again, meanwhile Happy Belated birthday!

What?? NO!!!
Testers can't stand natural light! Their skin burns and they turn to dust! What are those people thinking!
Next thing you know, we'll be hearing there's a ban on pizza and Coke cuz it's unhealthy.

Matthew,
Monkey Island was a fav in my house growing up. How about Maniac Mansion? That game was the greatest (at the time). Loved your performance in Sith! Best wishes on all your future endeavors.

Blimey, you were 17 in 1990. That means you are younger than me.
I am officially gutted...

Matthew,
I recieved Monkey Island for my birthday. I loved it. I thought that you were really good in ROTS. I loved the Hyperspace Halloween Audio Cast also. I think that you have a really good voice for villians. Have a great day.

"Has anyone ever played Monkey Island?"
Are you kidding? That is still my all time favorite game! I even have the music as my ring tone. I love everything about it! The music, the artwork and graphics, the story. They don't make them like that any more!
Monkey Island games are the ONLY games that I can sit and play together with my wife. She enjoys them almost as much as I do!
