 | Happy Independence Day! |
Happy Independence Day, everyone! But while we're at it, let's celebrate the Rebel's Independence from the Empire. When exactly would that be anyway? After the Battle of Endor? Or Coruscant? Or when the New Republic was set up? Not sure, maybe you guys have an idea (i hope so)
I'm going to the Paul Simon concert tonight in Cooperstown, New York, just to let you know. Hope to see some good fireworks!
God bless, and MTFBWY.

Our Idependence day was when we declared we wanted independence from the rule of England. So I believe that their independence day would be when they formed their alliance to get independence from the rule of the Empire.

independence from the rule of England
It's not England, damnit, it's Great Britain! How would you like it if everyone started calling the whole US "California"? That's kind of what it's like.

WHEN EXACTLY WOULD THAT BE ANYWAY?
I would have to go with the Battle of Endor. Mainly because that's when the WAR was over
and The Empire Rule was over. Besides, didn't they celebrate with fireworks all over the galaxy? Just a thought....Anyhoot, have a GREAT TIME at the concert tonight!! MTFBWY..

Happy Fourth!
Hmmmm....good question. Sounds like their "Petition of the 2000" (drawing a blank!...is that what it was called?) was their Declaration of Independence????

About the other thing, the Rebels weren't fighting a war of independence, they were fighting a revolution (in a more literal sense than the, frankly, erroneous definition applied to the American "Revolutionary" War, in that the Rebels sought to replace the existing government). Therefore there would be no 'day of independence', but possibly a VG Day (Victory in the Galaxy). I dunno.

There's nothing erroneous about the name of the Revolutionary War. The Patriots started a revolution so they could get out from under the opression of Great Britain and start their own government.

No they weren't. They didn't want to secede from the Empire (gain independence), they wanted to replace it as the governing body of the galaxy - this is known as a revolution.
The struggle of the American colonists against the British began as a revolution - or, perhaps more accurately, a rebellion - because the aim was not necessarily to gain independence, but rather more equitable treatment. However, as soon as the Decleration of Indepence was ratified, the intent became instead to secede from the British Empire. At this juncture - the second year - the war became one of independence, not rebellion.

I would say the Battle of Endor... it brought the rebellion into the mainstream, and the death of the Emperor would have made ordinary people believe it was possible to win...
after all, the American Independence movement started long before 7/4/1776... that was just the day it became "real"...
It's not England, damnit, it's Great Britain!
Is that preferable to the United Kingdom? Just curious...

Is that preferable to the United Kingdom
I'll start from the top:
1535 - Wales annexed by England
1707 - Scotland enters political union with England (and Wales) to form the Kingdom of Great Britain.
1800 - Ireland is brought into the fold to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
1922 - The UK officially acknowledges the independence of Ireland, with the exclusion of 13 counties (Northern Ireland), and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is born.
So, the UK as it is now has been around for only 84 years - considerably less time than the US. Here endeth the lesson.

...or not. I meant to add that therefore the UK, such as it is, did not exist at the time of the American War of Independence.
Addendum: An error on my part. Northern Ireland is composed of six counties, not thirteen. Oops.

The thing is, jedilily1026, there is a certain degree of leeway in the common nomenclature. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the full title, which is usually shortened to "the UK". However, a lot of people (including residents) refer to it as Britain, which leaves out NI, but which is generally accepted as a suitable substitute for United Kingdom.
The important thing to remember is to not call a Brit "English" off-hand, as this has the potential to cause grief around some folk. If someone called me English...well, I'd gently set them straight. For a first offense anyway.

I guess we'll always just see it differently. I respect your views on it and I hope you respect mine as well, but were always just gonna have different views on the subject.

actually, it could be the Corellian Treaty, signed some time before ep4
that is fairly close to the declaration of independence
