 | Vader's feelings, Ep 4 |
Because of a blog written by VA2, I was inspired to write this one. This thinking is a bit stretched, but bear with me.
We all know how flexible the GFFA can be. So we can interperet things however we see fit, yes? Ok then.
When the Falcon was dragged into the Death Star in ep 4, Vader is out in the landing area, and he remarks that there was a prescence he had not felt for a very long time. And for most fans out there, we believed him to mean Obi wan's prescence, right? Well, perhaps it is, but maybe not. It could be Luke's prescence, not Obi's that Vader felt. To really understand this blog, you need to look here for further info regarding how Vader would sense Luke at all. To sum up Angel's blog, Vader may have felt Luke and Leia and not Padme when he said "I felt her, see was alive". You really need to read that blog though to understand.
Ok, how far off was my theory? About a parsec or two, but maybe not. Tell me what you think.
Thanks, God bless, and MTFBWY
Oh, and the reason I used this pic is because I have read some other far fethced theories, all using this pic.

I think vader was talking about obiwan because technically, Anakin didn't know his children survived. And he couldn't have thought it was padme because he knew she died years before. He must have been talking about Obiwan.

It could have been Luke. Could it have been Leia. Better yet, because the twins were a blending of both Padme and Ani, could he have sensed something of his old self in one or both of them. Something of Padme, maybe? It didn't have to be Obi Wan. Vader must have known he was alive somewhere and who's to say he hadn't had little inklings of HIM all along.

Vader was indeed talking about Obi-Wan. Even if he sensed Luke it would be through the force only and since he knew Obi-Wan that is how he knew it was him. And don't forget about when Vader told Tarkin that Obi-Wan was on the Death Star and he " Had to face him alone".

I'll just state that he was speaking of Obi-wan's presence. None of the other films were written in enough detail to know vader was Luke's father yet and certainly padme was not even the picture at all yet then.
So yes, Obi-wan is what he was speaking of.

That's quite an interesting theory, and I admit, one I'd thought of before but dismissed. My main argument against it was that Vader had been in even closer contact with Leia, and as far as the movie goes, knew nothing about her being his daughter, so what was so different about Luke that Vader would recognize him?
If not for that, I'd like to think that the little bit of Anakin inside Vader knew...but then you have to think that he was knowingly toturing his own daughter, and that would be bad. That's why I prefer to think he was sensing Obi-Wan.
Thanks for writing! I enjoy your blogs.

I like your theory, cbern. It could have been Luke...Vader sensing a little of Anakin and a little of Padme'. Although he says to Tarkin that Obi-Wan is alive and on the Death Star, he may not have fully recognized the presence he was feeling. I'm sure that he felt Obi-Wan's presence, but there may have been another presence he could not make out. Makes you think, doesn't it?

" It's a presence I have not felt in..........." VADER ANH
Great theory here, cbern. It's possible and I'll state why. Others have said that Vader would have sensed Leia, from being in prior contacts with her. But would he? Hmmmmm......I don't know, I'm gonna go with NO. Here's why, Both Anakin and Padme believed they were having * 1 * baby. Maybe the presence Vader felt was a combination of an * OLDER * sensation ( Obi-wan and a hint of Padme's warmth ) and a *newer* undistinctive feeling (LUKE, a remnance of Anakin and Padme') ? As I said, they only thought there was 1. Anything is possible. NICE JOB....ANGEL

Cool blog - but i really believe that Vader felt Ben in the Force because later on in the movie he says 'he is here' and then rambles on about not under estimating the power of the Force. But that's my opinion. But hey, you could be right! its all about how the individual interprets the scene.

It was Obi. Anakin didn't think he had kids.

One major flaw in your theory (to my sight, of course, which is flawed too): When Padme was buried, she is made to look pregnant. In fact, everything had been done so that the Emporer and Vader didn't think that any children survived.
But, he could have realized that he did have kids, then maybe dismissed the thought after a minute until Ep. V. Maybe he couldn't sence the twins until they were together.
And this all could have been stated already, I didn't read the comments! Sorry if I'm repeating someone.
Anyways, great blog! May the force be with you!

I don't think he knew he was sensing his kids. I jus think it actually was one or both of them he WAS sensing. It was probably even a little confusing if they were indeed a blending of he and Padme. His part in his children would have been pre-sith. He couldn't have been exactly sure, except that he recognized what he was sensing. Of course, this is all maybe...

I remember when reading the ROTS novelization, Anakin was certain the the baby was a girl, not a boy. Interesting, but it may be that he didn't sence Luke until Mustafar. When Luke and Ben arrive at the Death Star, all the players of the Mustafar event are together once again, except Padme, of course. It may be that now he feels the three force presences he felt in Mustafar, and since he was so deep in the Dark side at this point, he doesn't recall exactly whose presence it was, so he naturally asumes it's Obi Wan's while it could be both Luke and Leia's together.
Good Blog.

PS: VA2 closed her messages since I arrived late, but her blog got me thinking in the exact same direction.

I thought it was Luke or Leia. Because Vader hadn't felt Padme's prescence in a long time, he felt the prescence of his children, Not Obi-wan.

Part of what you are saying i believe. I think you are right in that Anakin felt the life of Luke and Leia instead of Padme. But I don't think that it was Luke he felt on the death star. He knew Obi-wan more and spent more time with him. I think that his presense would have been felt stronger than that of Luke. And before that he was with Leia and didn't mention anything about that presence. I doubt he could have felt one stronger then the other. So I am still going to stick with that he felt Obi-wan on the death star and not Luke.

I believe he sensed Ben b/c at that time Ben was to be the distraction for everyone else to escape. Ben might have reached out through the Force to Vader so Ben could distract him so the kids and Han could get away.
I like your and Angel's idea too, that's just my spin.

Someone else might have answered this way already but...Vader was definitely feeling Obi-Wan b/c he tells Tarkin that he felt him.

It's a nice sentiment, but I don't think Vader is sensing Luke and Leia. For all intents and purposes to him, they died with Padme. In a sense he's lost his faith in the possibilities of the Force and focuses only on what it can give him in the here and now. And as has been mentioned, he specifically mentions the presence of his old Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The other indication would be his surprise at sensing the Force in Luke when he's chasing his son down the trenches. The why he can't sense his children is another matter, but I wonder if it has something to do with the Force itself masking the presence of Luke and Leia from Vader to protect them.
