Vader's advice to Luke.
"Give in to the Dark Side. It is the only way you can save your friends."
Darth Vader to Luke, ROTJ.

While finishing ROTJ, I came across this line during Luke's captivity on the Death Star. It might sound like the rest of Vader and Palpatine's speech to Luke to turn to the Dark Side and such, but it is more.

This was how Anakin thought one must save their friends. He turned to the Dark Side for the same reason, to save Padme. But even before that, he slaughtered Tusken Raiders to save, but really to avenge his mother. So this piece of advice actually makes sense. At least it does to us. Luckily, Luke does not turn so easily, and you know what happens from here.

Hope this makes sense to you guys too.

Thanks, God bless, and MTFBWY.

I think this is the moment when Vader seriously examines just how his life turned out. How empty must it feel to say this to Luke? His joining the dark side to save Padme actually resulted in her death. He knows this is a lie, and if this is a lie, his whole life is a lie.

Yeah - that line reminds me of the choice Vader had on whether to join the sith in order to save Padme.

He knows this is a lie, and if this is a lie, his whole life is a lie.

Well said! B-)

I think that. from Vaders point of view, using the Darkside to "save your friends" meant stopping them from blowing up the sheild generator and "convincing" them that the Rebellion was a bad idea and joining forces with Luke and his newly crowned Pop in keeping "peace" in the galaxy and ending "this destructive conflict."

That was part of Anakin/vaders problem, he always felt the Republic/Empire was SUPPOSED to rule with an iron fist: ONE man making the RIGHT choices for all, and keeping order by FORCE if needed.

So Vader isnt showing CONCERN for the welfare of Lukes friends, he's simply trying to convince Luke that in order to save them from throwing away their lives in a useless rebellion he'd need to embrace the Darkside and join Vader in ruling the galaxy.

Interesting take, DJ Maul. I hadn't considered that aspect before.

" GIVE IN TO THE DARK SIDE. IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO SAVE YOUR FRIENDS. "

To be honest here, I always felt that DV was trying to get Luke on * his * side and bring down the Emperor. It was all DV had left at this point, was to destroy the very thing that destroyed all he had ever loved and believed in. Also, DV wasn't *stupid* he knew all too well that the Emperor was planning to get rid of him and replace him with his only son as a new apprentice. That's how it went down with Dooku, there can be only 2; a Master and an Apprentice.....ANGEL

I agree completely with Angel. Palps and Vader are both trying to turn Luke to the dark side, but then Luke will have to choose whether to be Vader's ally and kill Palps, or be Palps Ally and kill Vader. Ever since Anakin started to turn to the dark side, he started losing everything that was important to his life. In the end, he was only left with Palps and the dream that one day he would be the Emperor. He is saying this line so Luke can feel that maybe he should team up with Vader instead of Palps (since he keeps saying his friends are doomed) and save those he loves. (cont)

Of course, Vader doesn't really care about Luke's friends, but by just saying this, he starts analyzing the reason why he joined the dark side in the first place, and how it turned against him. Instead of saving his loved ones (padme+baby) it destroyed them. This just causes more turmoil in Vader/Anakin's heart, and evetually may be a reason why he decided to turn back and save Luke using the light side instead of the Dark side.

I think I agree with DJ Maul. Vader didn't care at all about Luke's friends. He only cared about himself.

i also agree

vader did not care about luke's friends, but he did want luke to join his side

remember in esb, vader asks luke to join him to defeat the emperor and rule in his place
