A recent blog entry about artoo and his first encounter with Luke had me looking a bit more criticly at the movies. As I have mentioned before, I fill vending machines for a living so I recite movies in my head to pass time. Lately it's been the OT movies. There's one line that makes it into two of them: Obi-Wan has taught you well.
On the Death Star, after having defeated Kenobi, why wasn't he able to feel Luke in the Force? You can reason that he was unable to before because of Kenobi's Force presense. No it wasn't a matter of training, because he could feel it during the trench run(the Force is strong with this one). It wasn't until after Yoda starting Luke's training that Vader and Palps discovered who Luke was through the Force. However, during their first fight, Vader makes the statement that Obi-Wan has taught him well. Vader should have known better, simply from a time line standpoint. Obi-Wan was dead before the Force was truly awakened in Luke, therefore it should have been obvious. Also, if Vader could tell that the pilot in his sights in the trench was Force Sensitive, how could he not tell it was his son. After all, it is the pinnacle of arogance to think that all the Jedi had truly been destroyed. Surely he could have thought of somebody else who could have trained him.
