Musings from the Shadowlands

something worth fighting for
It struck me recently while watching the movie Soldier (love it!) that simply having an intangible thing such as a reason to fight can make such a huge difference in a soldier.

I have read all of Keren Traviss's Republic Commando books and admire how in depth she has taken us into the mind of not only the clone commandos, but also the average clone trooper. Anyone who has read these books are very familiar with Kal Skirata and the other Mando'ade instructors of the commando corps. After he introduced his recruits and subsequently the rest of the GAR to the Mando culture, thus giving them a heritage and identity, their effectivness increased. Giving them a sense of self and national pride (as much as Mando pride could be called national pride) provided them with that intangible that was lacking while being regarded as "meat droids".

Which brings me back to Soldier. The SGT was bested at the begining of the film by a better soldier in a combat initiated because of ego. The SGT had no personal stake in this fight, other than survival, which is also a powerful motivator. It wasn't until he had a more personal stake, the protection of a village that had taken him in and helped him, that he became better and more effective.

Just some private musings. I welcome your comments.

Interesting. I should get around to reading the Republic Commando series. I've heard good things about them, and I liked Karen's work in Legacy of the Force.

The movie Soldier shows how everyone can be replaced. This movie really moved me having been a soldier in the Army once. You can be the best at what you do, but one day someone better can out do you and take your place. This relates to many situations and can be applied in many ways, but if you remember the little boy that killed the snake showed that survival instincts exist in all of us. Sometimes you just have to be taught what to do to survive. The message I got from this movie was to teach the little ones before they become corrupted and we need to learn how not to be blindly lead.

Great topic! I am a huge fan of war movies, particularly those of World War II. I have not seen Soldier, though, but I sure will. Yes, this idea of something worth fighting for is very much a part of the soldier's mindset. The sense of nationality and pride every soldier has regarding his country is what dampens his fear of death and gives him something to risk his life for. I believe that this whole idea can be summed up (for the Americans, at least) in the motto "Freedom isn't free." That's why you get that warm and fuzzy feeling in your heart every time you beat a Medal of Honor game.:)

Keren Traviss's Republic Commando books
True Colors was awesome! So much so, I emailed KT to tell her so...ha!
As for something to live/fight for, its really a search for identity, and thus, a search for purpose. I would only caution that the search for purpose and identity is dire one, full of potential pitfalls. Be open, be aware, and be respectful, when attempting to discover your path in life.
