Musings from the Shadowlands

A Jedi knows no fear, but what about the rest of us.
I was reading a blog entry from Galacticbabe in which she gave a tongue in cheek look at what Luke was thinking after crashing on Dogaobah. While amusing, it got me thinking about what he really was thinking about and how did he not give in to soul-crushing depression and mind-numbing panic. He knows there are no settlements from his in-orbit scans, nobody knows where he is, there is no mention of this planet on records, he has no HoloNet access, any beacons he does have will only work on a planetary scale, and there's no technology beyond what he has on his fighter, which is also broken and irretrievable to boot. He's not even sure if Yoda is real at this point, and his mastery of the Force is non-existent. How in the Force could anyone not give in to despair at this point? It speaks alot to his eternal optimism and idealism. No matter how bleak, he always managed to keep a bright outlook. Even after finding Yoda, he never dwells on getting off planet. Granted he made a few snide comments about his current sourroundings, but he doesn't insist that Yoda help him or leave him alone so he can figure his course of action. Instead, he dives headlong into his training and accepts that his path of redemption will be revealed to him in good time. This is one of the most inspiring aspects of this sequence of events.

Niiice! :)

It was actually thiat line of thinking (the serious side) that brought me to that point. He had NO idea where he was going, or what he would find when he got there, with only a ghost Obi-Wan to guide him. And Ghost Obi-Wan was pretty vague about things.

Great entry, Cowboy! You took the words right out of my brain!:D

It's a nice article, but has anyone ever consider writing about the lessthan pleasant aspects of Luke's character? I get the feeling that many STAR WARS fans are determined to keep on some kind of pedestal as some ideal man. And in my opinion, no one is ideal.

Even without Mastery of the Force, the Force was still with him, and guiding him, and he trusted Obi-Wan... Even though he really didn't know him that well, there was a connection there, again, through the Force....

It's a nice article, but has anyone ever consider writing about the less than pleasant aspects of Luke's character?

No, not me... and he's as close to ideal as I can think of...

Excellent insight on Luke, IMO. And the author's musings in his title, "....But what about the rest of us....", reminded me of the number of times I've thought of scenes throughout the SW movies which gave me some courage at times of my life: courage to try something new, to approach a new situation without panic, to try and keep my eye on the Big Reason I was doing something despite problems along the way.

Good entry ... Luke is indeed an inspiration when you look at his determination, his courage and his ability to dive headlong into an unknown situation.

It's funny in how you describe Dagobah is similar to how Obi-Wan found Kamino in AOTC. Both were "hidden" and unknown planets.

It's the consistent faith he has that is so inspiring. Faith in the Force, faith in his friends.
