 | Why do you collect? |
Why do you collect? It is an honest question and a very simple one.
Do you collect to remember your youth like some sort of staying young thing? You know .... nostalgia. Do you collect just to be a part of the Saga somehow?
I realize many who collect are not old and in fact the prequel trilogy may be their/your point of nostalghia when they/you are in their late 30s like I am now.
Before you answer read why I collect.
I collect for nostalgia's sake and is probably why I collect mostly the original trilogy type stuff and characters. I collect a lot of the prequel stuff too so don't get me wrong but my favorite stuff is always the OT.
It is something to do and makes feel connected to an era when things were not necessarily better but they were different than now. The days of parking lots filled with gas guzzling huge vehicles you could make a swimming pool out of the trunk space. Sneaking into the Drive-In Theaters or paying too for that matter lolz.
No cell phones or internet and people read books and magazines instead for their info. Obviously I love the internet because blogging was just not something one could do unless they put out their own printed paper or were working for a magazine so this is great.
I wish I had this when I was a kid at 9 years old when Star Wars came out. Instead all we had were friends we knew at school who saw the films and understood what they were like we did. I would buy magazines with articles about it or cool phtoshoots and interviews.
I always feel a really good warm throwback feeling when I watch the films. I feel the same thing when I buy things like vehicles and figures or what have you. I suppose it is human nature to stick to your roots ... to be "set in your ways" or being called retro.
The late 70s and early 80s were a special time which obviously are gone for good except when I collect. I suppose that is the key for me in collecting.
Tonight I bought a second McQuarrie 30th Anniversary Concept Snowtrooper and another Animated Debut Boba Fett figure, it makes my second as one may be an opener. I felt that same nostalgia though and it was quite powerful to be honest.
So now .... why do YOU collect?

I probably collect for several different reasons. One would be for my undying love of all things Star Wars. Another, no doubt, would be to reclaim the enthusiaism and innocence of childhood. It's so sad that as adults we lose so much of the sense of wonder that something as simple as a cool new toy can bring..... Collecting takes me back to that simple and uncomplicated part of my life.
Nice entry!

SW to me is exciting. I collect SW stuff and display them around my home b/c it makes me feel good. Practically anything that reminds me of the SW universe makes me feel good. I get excited when I find something I like. Yesterday I found a DV mug and Big Lots and had to buy it. That's it...SW makes me feel good. It also connects me to a group of people who understand my feelings regarding SW and down here where I am that's hard to find.

Interesting, I have to stop in at the same shopping center at a TJMaxx where i have a Big Lots, I will stop in and look for one of those while i am there.

me too, pretty much what i was saying too. I lived up the street from a movie theater it was maybe not even 2 blocks away. I saw SW many times there and enjoyed it so much. I lived near a mall too so i would go there and buy toys.

Very cool. I think we collect for a lot of the same reasons. It harkens back to a magical time in my life as well, and, I just think the stuff is so stinking cool that I "must" have it. It is just really cool to see it all in your house too-kind of like your own Star Wars memorabillia museum.

To be honest, I think I mostly collect to show my loyalty to something or someone. If I think a movie, or an actor or musician, is worthwhile, then I like to show it off by having memorabilia for that movie or person, I can see, "Did you see So-in-so in Whatchamacallit? Wasn't he/she/it good in that?"
I have several collections. I'll never have an exhaustive collection of any one person or thing, because I collect so much of so many, but the major ones are: Jerry Lewis, Star Wars, Peanuts, ALF, Monkees, and others.
Good blog.

If you don't find it up there by your parts let me know. They had 2 Chewies and 2 R2s and 1 more Vader and it comes with two packages of M&Ms. I can go back during the week and get it for you if they still have them. E-mail me and let me know .

I guess so, that makes sense. he was kinda Grampy lookin' lolz
Because it's fun
ha!

That is definitely a big part of it. I collect some other stuff too but not as seriously as SW.

I collect for the same reasons as you. It makes me remember life at 9 and how in awe I was with the SAGA, how I so connected with it, how much fun my cousin and I had collecting together. You know I lost all my original collection which saddens me still, but I'm so stoked to be back collecting again and have had a great year hangin with you bud!

Nice entry... this post is now reminding me of all the stuff I need to go out and find!!
Notice how I said need up there...

Meeeee too. Most of my figures are OT, but I have a few of the PT ones.... basically, I just get whatever I think looks cool, but the OT stuff (my vintage stuff from when I was a kid, plus the newer OT stuff) really means the most to me. It relates to my SW memories from my childhood, as well as the awesome new associations I have.

And it all looks so damn cool displayed. If I have a really crappy day, I come home, walk in the door... and the first glimpse I get of all of this stuff really cheers me up. That's why I collect.

My answer when asked "why do you collect" may seem overly simple but its the TRUTH.
I collect because...its FUN!
I have a blast with it, from shopping for items I want to setting them up in my toy room, its just a great hobby that always keeps me excited and on my toes.
Sure, I suppose its a way of reliving my childhood, being an adult who still "plays" with his toys all these years later, but really all adults have some kinda "toys" they play with...be it sports related, tech stuff, or whatever.
being part of such a great community of fellow collectors & fans has certainly made it more fun, too!

There is definitely a connection with the past - but thats only part of it. The main reason I collect is the fun and the connection to the material - movies, comics, whatever. I am a very visual person - I picture a fair amount of what I read in my head. In my collection I have a lot of my favorite characters and vehicles from the series. I enjoy looking at the items in my collection and making strong visual connections.

Some of the greatest topics of discussion are the most simple, and this one's no exception. I remember so fondly the time when Ster Wars first came about. Not just the film, but the whole experience. It was so new from the special effects, the lingo, the scenery, everything! But the characters and the themes are all so timeless. The collectables that are associated with the saga tie the whole experience together. I remember being so excited when the first action figures came out! It was terrific...

... My mom surprising me by taking me to see ESB before a Little League game, and my teammates, all of 9 years of age, hanging on my every word as I recalled the film, because kids don't care about "spoilers." Their enraptured expressions as I told them the incredible fact that, "Darth Vader is Luke's father!" and their reaction of, "NO WAY!!" as our coaches yelled at us to pay attention to the game. Not being able to find the Shock Troper variant of ROTS Clone fig #6, then finding FOUR of them the day my mom died. That's why I collect. It's not so much an answer to a question, but a sum total of an incredibly imaginative series of events.

I confess that I collect for a few reasons.
1. It brings my family together. Lots of time, we are out somewhere and Wham! there is a unique SW item. So we acquire it. The item has a story as to how, where and when we bought it.
2. It makes me grinning ear to ear happy. When I'm happy my family is happy.
3. I love to find all the different items, and ...self promote all the cool items I've acquired.
4. For the priceless memories...I know that my son will always remember the mid-night shopping sprees for all the new action figures and other merchandise.
5. It's an rush... think back to the night before anything SW is released... the anticipation... All of you know what I mean...
