Hasbro's New Force FX Lightsaber
Well it appears Hasbro WILL be making the new Force FX lightsabers we have all come to know and love. At the bottom of this blog entry is an interview with Hasbro's Senior Director of Marketing for Star Wars / Indiana Jones, Derryl D. DePriest.

Basically it clearly states the exisiting designs will be a priority for Hasbro to get made under their name and on the market. I have read too many rumors online and am making this blog to set the record straight from the horse's mouths as it were.

I missed some of the early Force FX releases and one can only assume that Hasbro will be re-releasing a few of these to keep us occupied until they design new yet to be released lightsabers.

The interview is from January but still new enough to be news and not rumor.

In any case it is certain we WILL still have Force FX lightsabers to buy, hopefully this helps you decide in whether or not to fork over money to scalpers trying to make a buck off of the scare that they are gone forever.

Hasbro will fill the market with these as the demand is very high, it is even difficult to find broken FX sabers on eBay and other auction outlets. You know you have something special when people keep the broken ones as well.

I myself have 2 FX sabers with dead spots I plan to have rebuilt by quality fansites that sell kits or do it for you. I also plan to buy a few of whatever Hasbro releases and hope that they supply enough to actually find easily IN STORES.

Anyway ..... as posted at the Rebelscum site in January, please pay attention to it and stop spreading rumors, there is nothing more irritating to a collector than rumors.

Hasbro's Derryl Depriest Interview On FX Plans

01/31/08 08:12 AM

FX Answers Directly from Hasbro Senior Director of Marketing for Star Wars / Indiana Jones, Derryl D. DePriest.

PW: Like the other Hasbro Star Wars products, will this line be under your direction as well?

DDD: Yes, it will be managed by a team in my group dedicated to the FX business.

PW: I noticed the press release referred to the line as "Force FX" and indicated the line is being "assumed". Do you plan to do more than take the line and run with it, continuing to add to the line by filling holes not completed by Master Replicas?

DDD: Our first task is to get our arms around the existing sabers and get them into production under our imprint as quickly as possible. Our strategy for this year at least will be making sure that, from an engineering and design perspective, we have teams that are completely up to speed with the tech before we broaden it out. Longer-term, we will look to expand the line but we do not have anything to announce regarding new products. We want to walk before we run, and when we are sure it's right we will look to what makes sense for building out the business. We did not acquire the FX business to just re-market the current products, but to continue to innovative within this very cool sphere of "working" 1:1 scale weaponry.

PW: I have noticed fans are "hoping" and "expecting" the price-point of the pieces to come down due to Hasbro's scale. Might that be one of your goals?

DDD: We are still working on the costing, but our goal will be to hold the business at the current level if possible.

PW: Now, some product specific questions:

PW: Do you have any plans to offer FX Sabers with removable blades?

DDD: We think we can do a lot of fun things with the technology that exists, and then we hope to innovate on that as well. It's too early to talk about where we plan to go specifically, though, as we need to make sure that we understand all aspects of the current line first. Fans should know, though, that we love this line and have passion for it, and plan to expand out from the current line as soon as we have a firm foundation.

PW: Fans have long wanted a Dooku FX Saber, might that be in the plans?

DDD: Dooku would be very cool, as would some other characters as well. We don't want to make any specific promises yet, though, because plans are always subject to change and we don't want to disappoint fans if the lineup changes.

PW: What about kid-sized sabers FX sabers?

DDD: We plan to stick with the 1:1 scale sabers for now.

PW: Does the license include weapons other than sabers? Any plans there?

DDD: The license is for FX weapons, so it could include other weapons (such as blasters). That's something we'll be looking at as well.

PW: What about electronic scaled pieces?

DDD: We will be concentrating primarily on 1:1 scale.

PW: The press release also states sabers will be available in the spring. This seems to indicate Hasbro really is taking up where Master Replicas left off. Are you using the same company to build the pieces that Master Replicas used?

DDD: Yes, we are working with the same vendors who have been producing the FX sabers to-date.

PW: The forum community has been hard at work making a comprehensive list of pieces for consideration by eFX and Hasbro. Comments?

DDD: We're not ready to comment on any specific line extensions or future innovations. As with our other lines, we are listening to what the fans say and will look forward to meeting many of them face to face at conventions this year.

I'd like to thank Derryl for taking the time out of his very busy schedule to answer these questions! I know everybody will appreciate it.

Check out Ultra Sabers they do conversions and sell conversion kits that include a removable blade... someday I'll have my Obi-Wan done when I have the $$$$ to spare...

Heeeee! Thanks for putting this news out there for ;)

Gawsh, I still can't help feeling a little uneasy about it. There are a few sabers that are almost impossible to find and getting more impossible. It would just be sucky if Hasbro chose not to reproduce some of those sabers.

I wish I had that same problem, I am out of room. Nice to see you making out okay.

I would like a Mace Windu FX (I love purple) to keep my Anakin Blue FX company.

Hopefully they will make more as i need a mace too ... I have an Anakin Epi III and love it too like you do.

Gotcha, they are already on my list of possibilities. they seem to have a nice finished result.

Just one?? I wish i could do that lolz.

That is ALL they can make now as they have whatever designs were made already that belong to Lucasfilm. The article says they will not be ready for new designs this year and can only put out the existing designs.

Good news for us as it means more Mace, more Luke ROTJ etc.

Thanks for the info! My immediate thought was, "Cool, maybe the price will go down." But then I thought about how Hasbro is upping their prices for other items...and I'm not so hopeful anymore, (especially after reading that interview).

I really really really want the Mace saber, but the brightness is crap compared to many of the others. Perhaps that will be taken care of....? Who knows. I'm just glad I have more time to save up for one of these. :D

Currently I have Luke's green saber and Mace Windu's purple one's. I hope that they go on to create dooku's, sidious', and qui-gon's. Plus all the other jedi we are introduced to and they should definitely start and EU line. That would be cool.

good topic for a blog and good job getting a copy of the interview.

I just hope the prices don't get too outta hand... I only have two sabers to begin with (not including the Force FX construction set) and would like to get more. If the price stays about the same then that's doable.... anything more and I'm out of luck.

Like just about everyone else, I'd love to have a Mace saber... I'm still holding out hope for Yoda's, too... and an Obi-Wan... etc.... lolzzz

Thanks for the info. :)

That is my main fear with hasbro as they seem to always try to get every ounce of $ possible in a greedy manner imo.

Thanks for posting this!

Cool, you are welcome. I just hate seeing rumors and remembered seeing this article after seeing dumb rumors about the line being dead.

Here's to hoping that Hasbro does not screw these up.

My fears as well but at least the sabers themselves will be okay.

I am so glad they're doing this!!

Me too ... we had better get some of the rare ones i missed lolz.

Gotcha, they are already on my list of possibilities. they seem to have a nice finished result.

The only drawback is that the blade lights up all at once, instead of "growing" out from the emitter.... because they use an LED in the emitter instead of many little LEDs in the blade itself... it is much brighter, though...

yep I am glad too, also the Dooku thing ... that would so rule and be one of the best selling ones ever. I think the barrel design for the batteries and partsmake it difficult to make. i seem to remember reading about that a year or so ago.

I sure hope they do man.

thanks for the news, mt!

You're welcome dear.
