It is best to begin with a rudimentary discussion of the definition of Force sensitivity. A Force sensitive is any person or thing (whether inanimate, animal or plant) that is able to access and affect the Force. Many refer to those who are "Jedi," as a catchall for those who may use the Force. This is a common, but incorrect and frankly annoying misnomer. In reality a "Jedi" is a Force user who adheres to a specific philosophy and body of principles that govern his or her actions and decisions in life. A "Sith" is similarly a Force user that holds fast to a completely different philosophy in direct opposition to the Jedi. In contrast, a "dark Jedi" is a much more generic term for those who have fallen to the dark side, regardless of specific affiliation. Additionally, there are Force users such as the
Jensaari, the White Current Users, the Aing-Tii monks and others, who do not rightly fall under the category of "Jedi," but are considered Force users all the same, and are still referred to as "Force sensitives." So now that I have thoroughly confused you, let's go on to how Force sensitivity is determined.
As we have seen, there are apparently two criteria for Force Sensitivity-midichlorian concentration, and an active nub. Now, midichlorian concentration is on a sliding scale. It's like melanin concentration in the eyes, skin and hair of humans in particular. Some people obviously have more, some have far less, but the majority of us are somewhere in the middle. Therefore, as I refer to those who have "high" midichlorian concentrations, it means being relatively high. Number-wise, I have no frame of reference, as the only concentration ever named was Anakin's initial one (20,000) as a boy of 9 or 10, before he suffered any limb loss. Further, there is no point of reference. What is normal? It is unknown. Without further data, it is unwise to form further theories, as they would be based on mere conjecture.
In contrast, the nub is an either-or situation. It is either on or off, there is no in between situation, at least there is no evidence of the fact as far as I have seen. If the nub is on, then the individual has the capacity for Force sensitivity, if the nub is not active or "off," then the person will not and cannot be Force sensitive. That also means that conscious use of the Force requires an active nub. That is not to say that somehow the Force cannot affect those with an inactive nub, but that such a person could not control it.
In summary, an active nub indicates overall sensitivity of the person to the Force as well as their ability to actively access the Force. Midichlorian concentration controls the strength of the sensitivity.
From this data, we can go on to what I refer to as "The Four Categories of Force Sensitivity." This will be addressed in the next blog.
