Interlude II: Lando Calrissian
I am posting this blog in response to an excellent, well thought out question from R2D2sPink3.

"How would you classify Lando? He is a gambler and is good when it comes to that, but when it comes to business he has inordinate bad luck. The majority of his business ventures have failed, not because of a lack of skill, but because of factors utterly outside his control. Is there a higher purpose to this? And where do people who are unlucky fit in your scale?"

Actually Pink3, Lando has very good luck. Consider his ability to always land on his feet. He's one "hep cat" and I'm not just talking about his natty fashion sense! ;) Many of his business ventures that I can recall have been moderate (if not spectacular) successes at first, and then have usually bombed over time, but there was always quite a bit left from each venture to recoop and to begin anew. That's quite a contrast to someone who truly is "unlucky."

I'd put Lando in category 3 personally, but again remember that these are relative highs and lows. And when I consider the fact that many of his business failures stem from doing the exact opposite of what he should have done--stockpiling a certain material, for instance--or is due to his close friends, the Solos and Skywalkers, being targeted and then his business subsequently becoming "collateral" damage, it indicates a higher count. That doesn't mean that Lando's midichlorian count would necessarily be as high as say, Anakin Skywalker. It just means higher than average. Sadly, because I have no specific numbers to go by, I cannot say for certain just what "average" is.

For "unlucky" people, it depends how you define that. If you mean people without any specific luck, then that's definitely all of us "regular people." If you mean people that can't seem to do anything right, then there are a couple of possibilities:

1. They have just enough midichlorians to give them inklings, hints (subconsciously, of course) and that they consistantly just make wrong decisions.
2. It could be that some people just make bad decisions on their own leading to "bad luck" that is really just a culmination of poor choices.
3. A third (which I dislike considering) is that these people are the galaxy's way of making you count your blessings, or that the galaxy is playing a joke on them. (Again, this is not a pleasant thought, but for the sake of completeness, it is included.)
4. The last one is by far the most likely. Don't forget that time and unforeseen occurances befall us all. There is such a thing as being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Although it is easy to say that the Force creates and causes everything, it is important to remember that the Force does not negate free will! Some may take issue with that, but from all I have read and seen, there has never been any evidence stating that a person's chosen path is their only path in life. Never rule out the human factor! ;)

I hope that answers your question, hun. Although I've been trying to cement this idea in my own mind for the past four years, it's still a far cry from knowing the absolute truth, if such a thing is possible at all! :D
