The Ironic Tragedy of Darth Tyranus?
I just thought about making this entry because I wanted to analyze Count Dooku to show that perhaps he is more interesting than many would think. I know some people, not any of us true Star Wars fans, that think Dooku is one of the worst characters. But they fail to see there is a depth to his character:

Let's start off by talking about Dooku's history. (Forgive me if there are some parts I miss, I have yet to read Dark Redezvous) Dooku (or as rumors would say, Jard Dooku) was born in a lineage of counts of his homeworld, Serenno. At an unknown age but most likely as a baby like the majority of Jedi, he was taken into the Order and was trained by Yoda until coming under the apprenticeship of Jedi Master Thame Cerulian. Days before becoming a Padawan learner to Thame, Dooku was blamed for taking a Sith holocron from his soon-to-be master. However, it was really Lorian Nod who, after Dooku betrays him by turning him in, would be expelled and would go on to become a space pirate. When Dooku became a Jedi Master long afterwards, he took Qui-Gon Jinn under his wing. After that, he would become master to Komari Vosa, who would become much less successful after getting expelled for all the merciless slaughtering she did at the Battle of Galidraan. Dooku, after realizing the Republic was corrupt, left the Order and became a Sith Lord, apprenticed by Darth Sidious, after murdering Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas. And we all know what happens after that.

So, what exactly made Dooku leave the Order? Leave the Republic?

He, unlike the overconfident Jedi, realized the corruption of the both organizations. The Jedi became unable to deal with the problems at hand, thinking that if the Dark Side is being clouded, nothing can be done except wait to face what is being clouded when it is a direct thing where sensing it through the Force is unrequired. And by the time the clouded figure reveals itself, the Jedi can no longer end the problem while still keeping peace. Neither can they sense the problems this may cause. This became apparent when all the remaining Mandalorians except for Jango Fett, were slaughtered on Galidraan, the same Mandalorians that lost the war of their name millenia ago against the Jedi Revan and his armada of rebel Jedi. Except this time this massacre was approved by all Jedi. As well was all this apparent when Qui-Gon was killed by Darth Maul. But Dooku did not blame the Jedi for not sensing this, he blamed them because they couldn't prepare for something like this. Isn't the Dark Side clouding your senses a blatant reason to think that there is a threat.

So, why did he leave the Republic? Dooku probably realized that it was being run by corrupt politicians who would drive the Republic into the ground. The Jedi would try to assume control and armaggedon for this galactic nation would be unleashed. And the irony of it is that this was all part of the ingenius plan of the one who would become Dooku's Sith master.

So, Dooku returned to Serenno and became its Count, absorbing all the wealth and power he could get. At some point, he was introduced to Darth Sidious who offered him great power in return for the creation of the Separatist Movement.

So, why did Dooku agree? For me to easily explain this, we have to compare Darth Tyranus to Darth Vader. Anakin/Vader strengthened the Republic and built upon what was already there by helping Palpatine create the Galactic Empire. However, his reason for doing this is so Palpatine will grant him with the power he needs to save Padme. Although this would not ultimately become what his powers are used for, he started with good selfless intentions.

Dooku, on the other hand, is obsessed with triumph in whatever he does. This is symbolized in that capture the flag thingy in Legacy of the Jedi (forgive me I read LOTJ a long time ago). He doesn't want to work to improve the Republic, he'd rather join the winning side of the war. But there is no other side and no war. So with the help of the Sith, he creates another side and a war so he can gain more and more power. Unlike Vader, Tyranus is selfish.

This impatience and lust for immediate power is what ultimately led to his downfall. He was so obsessed with his power, physically and politically, that he failed to see that the Separatist Movement is just a part of Sidious's grand scheme. He was under the illusion that nothing could go wrong and that the Separatists are the greatest force in the galaxy. In a way, Dooku and the CIS met the same end he was trying to avoid by leaving the Jedi Order.

Well, that pretty much raps it up. I hope you learned something today and if this made no sense, feel free to tell me never to do philosophical stuff like this again.
