Clone Wars Confusion...
Hello everyone!

I was just watching Clone Wars, Season 1, Chapter 7 (the one where Dooku fights with Asajj Ventress as Sidious secretly watches), and something caught my attention. After Dooku and Ventress finish their duel, Sidious reveals (through his holographic crawl-chair) that he had been watching. He says that Ventress has great skills, and that she will be useful.

Okay, now down to the interesting part.... When Ventress asks Sidious what he wants her to do, he replies:

"A young Jedi named Anakin Skywalker.... You will find him for us and eliminate him."

Later, as she flies away, Dooku and Sidious have a conversation:

Dooku: She will be more than a match for young Skywalker.
Sidious: It matters not. She is merely an instrument to bring forth the eradication of the Jedi.

What?! My question is this: why would Sidious order Anakin killed if he clearly had plans for him? Sidious obviously was already planning to corrupt Anakin and bring him over to the Dark Side. He wouldn't risk letting Ventress kill Anakin, putting his plans of purging the galaxy of the Jedi at risk.

The only explanation I can think of is this: Sidious knew Anakin could defeat Ventress, and he wanted him to kill her so Dooku couldn't have a new apprentice. I'm sure he didn't want Dooku to be able to train another Sith, as that would mean there would be three Sith at once, going against Darth Bain's Rule of Two.

For some reason, I don't think Sidious would take that much of a risk. After all, he needed Anakin for his plans to work.

Let's hear your thoughts! I hope someone out there has a better explanation than me!

Thanks in advance for the help! May the Force be with You!!

P.S. My 25th blog!!

Heres what I think;

He would order that becuase he wants Dooku to precieve that he(sidous) wants Anakin dead. Sidious knows she cannot defeat him and is just projecting a false illusion into her(ventress') mind to make her think she can defeat him. Its all part of his plan, as you know. May the Force be with you all, always.

I hope this helped a little...

First.....Happy 25th!:)

I just went and watched that particular chapter--any excuse to get to watch!:) I like your explanation of things. Sidious knew darn good and well Anakin could beat her. And I know Sidious foresaw that Anakin would kill Dooku, so he basically wanted Ventress out of the way so Anakin could fulfill his destiny.

BUT she did not die there. She makes a few more appearences after that.(I forgot where but I read/saw it somewhere)Sorry thats so indistinct.Besides since he was on Yavin4 I think Sidious wanted Anikan to open himself to anger.(That is how he wins in the end.)

My take on it is here: Ventress is a means to an end, she proved a useful commander at times during the Clone Wars - and you are right that Sidious expected Anakin to defeat her, and even if she did win, then she would prove a worthy likely apprentice. However, maybe Sidious forsaw that Anakin would defeat her, which he did, on 3 occasions: Yavin IV, Coruscant and Bos Pity.

However, she is still at large...

Sidious is a master schemer, at times he had his eye on Quinlan Vos as a possible candidate for apprentice, it makes sense to keep his options open, in case one fell by the wayside. After all, he engineered the Clone Wars, a huge risk for hoping his future apprentice survived.

A ploy, perhaps. At this point, Anakin still is unpredictable (although Sidious undoutedly was interested in the young Jedi). Pitting Anakin against Ventress surely would test Anakin's skill, mettle, and (unbeknownst to him) worth as a possible apprentice to the Dark Lord.

One aspect Sidious had going in his favor was his patience.

Exactly what I thought... thanks for the great comments, GalacticBabe!
...a huge risk for hoping his future apprentice survived.
Which is exactly why my question arose.

i agree. to me its the same as the situation woth Dooju and Anakin - Sidious sensed that Anakin would be strong enough to defeat him, and even if he hadn't, it would have simply proved that he wasn't worthy to be Palps' new apprentice, and he just would have held on to Dooku until someone else more worthy came along.

. . . after all, like Yoda, i'm sure Sidious saw more than one potential future. even though the version with Anakin being his new apprentice was probably the strongest/most likely, i think he was shrewd enough to always keep other options open (as he does with his 'hands' even after Anakin turns into Vader).

either way, whether Asaaj proves a worthy test for Anakin (most likely situation) or ends up besting him and becoming a good candidate for apprentice herself (less likely), she will still end up being a means to an end, that being Sidious' plan to destroy the Jedi and take over . . .

. . . and btw, happy new year Big Guy, and MTFBWY :D

Same to you, brooklooineghost! Thanks for your comments! And you're absolutely right when you said she is, in the end, simply a means to an end.
Thanks again!

I think that this is a very Naruto-esque situation. I could go on and on, but I just say this. Try watching the show. It is very enlightening in areas such as these...

Good Naruto-point mandomadman.......
You mean orochimaru testing sasuke with the 3 sound genins in the exam 2phase???
I agree, Palp is the mastermind indeed, the puppetier, everithing happens on his calculations..... well, anakin's heart was never a propiety of palpatine, hided in-behind Vader's black suit and awakened by his son Luke. That was not foreseen at all for the great Sidious........
anyway, Asajj was just to test Ani, to close him to the dark side, to push him into anger and to level-up him....
Speaking of RPG, how many levels have anakin reach when beating Asajj?? (just a fun silly question)....
BYe Then......

i think he knew that sending her would tempt anakin to use his anger, the more anakin chose the dark path, the easier it would be when the time came to turn him completely

He tells her so that she thinks she can defeat him. Her arogance and anger will help fuel the anger within Anakin. We see this at the end of Volume 1. He's had enough of her being able to outsmart him and caatch him off guard. His pride takes over and fuels the fire of anger.

I too thought of this when I first saw this episode, but realized it shortly afterwards (a few yrs ago actually). After review of it and pondering in my chambers (haha), I came with the solution. Sidious wished to make Anakin release his anger somewhat, perhaps be a sort of preamble to his path down the dark side. Thats my opinion of it at least. And if it backfired and Anakin died (which Sidious knew wouldnt happen cuz he can see the future), then it would take Anakin out and he and Dooku could defeat the Jedi by themselves without him (whether that would have worked or not). Good blog though.
