Hello again everyone!
What I want to know today is why
so many people are against Star Wars? I've noticed, over my years of fandom, that people always label SW fans as odd, or worse, "geeks" or "nerds".
But what really infuriates me is when you say to these people, 'well, what do
you think about SW?', they say something to the affect of, 'it's stupid' or, 'it's for retards'. Then you say, 'well, have you watched any of the movies? Read any of the books? Do you know
anything about it?' The person then proceeds to stare at you with a dazed expression on their face and say 'well, no, but I don't need to! It's just stupid!'
For example, my older sister just came along and read some of this blog. She said, 'You're actually putting
that on the internet?' as she made an odd face. Then I said, 'Yes. I am.' Then she replied, 'Oh,
you're such a geek'. I then got upset (obviously), and said, 'Hey, that's exactly what I'm talking about!! Did you
just read this?' As she turned and walked away, she said, 'Well it's true!
You're all a bunch of nerds!'
(Don't get me wrong, I love my sis, but she just really makes me angry when she makes fun of me for liking sci-fi shows -
particularly Star Wars.)
This is
exactly what I'm talking about. How can non-SW fans criticize us for liking something perfectly fine? People who love, say, comedies, horror films, or documentaries, aren't judged against and persecuted for liking what they like! And just because it's "Star Wars", people are horrible! I honestly do
not understand.
Maybe if people just gave SW (or anything, for that matter) a chance, then they just might realize that people don't just fly around in spaceships and shoot each other with laser beams. There's a meaning to it that not many movies or TV shows can even attempt to display. And, it's
entertaining! People just don't understand that you can't judge something by it's social steryotype! And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that people have to
absolutely love it like we do, but they should at least watch a movie (even
one movie) and say, 'okay, that wasn't all
that bad...'. If more non-SW fans did at least
that, I would be content.
And even while I'm writing this, I'm realising that I'm just giving a tiny example of the problem I have with the human condition in general! Especially today's adolescent population - they just can't get past worrying about what everyone else will think about them. They need to step back and realize that everyone is an individual, and it's
okay to be different, or to like something that the majority of the population doesn't!
Well, I get very upset when I talk about this, and I usually end up yelling at people and rant on for
probably a bit too long, so I'm going to stop there and leave you with something to ponder on....
