Truly Wonderful, the Mind of a Child Is...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Hello everyone.

Yes, I know, this is a Star Wars blog, but I have to write about this!

As most of you know, I'm a huge BSG fan. And even though I suspected that Kara would meet her demise in last night's episode, I never believed it would actually happen! And yes, she died, when her Viper exploded.

I was shocked. I couldn't believe it! I just sat there with my mouth hanging open, as the rest of the show flashed before my eyes. And even though she died, I was happy with how they did it (wow... I can't believe I just said that.)

The show did a great job of giving Starbuck the sendoff she deserved. The whole show was dedicated to her, which doesn't always happen when a character is killed off a show. I really loved the fact that she came to terms with everything her life had thrown at her, like her mother's abusiveness, her mother's death, Zac's death, and Leobon's torture (emotional and physical) of her. I absolutely loved how right before she died, she kept repeating "I'm not afraid anymore. I'm not afraid..."

I think they could have explained more about her special, pre-written destiny a little more though. They kind of left that part hanging. It appears that her whole destiny was to come to terms with her mother, and Leobon, and to overcome her fears of death. Honorable, courageous, touching, yes, but not quite what I was expecting. I was expecting her to play some major role in either the discovery of Earth, or something to do with the Cylons and the Final Five (and no, I did not think she was a Cylon model... geesh!).

Even long after her Viper exploded, the same thing kept going through my mind: She's never going to see Earth! Yes, she did stand on it when she was in the Tomb of Athena, but she never really was there - to know it and it's location. That was what bothered me the most. To me, she was one of the characters that I thought deserved to set foot on Earth, what with what she went through in her childhood, on New Caprica, and especially the war in general. Her husband (were she and Zac actually married?... I don't think so) was taken from her, and her spirits were totally and completely crushed. I was happy how she started to open her mind to the idea of Earth and her and her people's salvation there.

I really liked how they tied up the loose ends on the story arc with her, Lee, and Sam. Right before she went back into the air (for the last time), she and Lee had a truly meaningful, genuine conversation, where Kara said that all they could ever be was the CAG and his #2 (friends as well, obviously). I liked how she finally faced the truth and came to terms with it.

I also liked (wow... I liked a lot of things about my favourite character's death... creepy...) how Kara died in the cockpit. When you came down to it, her flying was really all she had left. Think about it - her marriage was failing, she had no family, she caused everyone she loved turmoil, and she was constantly haunted by memories of Leobon and New Caprica. When she was in her Viper, though, she was at home. She was happy. It was the one thing in her life (I think) that actually meant something to her. I thought it fitting that she lived her last moments there.

And now for my futile musings on her resurrection (hey - can you honestly blame me for grasping at straws??)

When she was in her Viper, right before it exploded (in the show, Adama said that it would be crushed, but anywho...), Kara had her hand on the ejection lever, which would blast her out of the cockpit, had she pulled it. And since I think that there actually was a Heavy Raider there, (Leobon was supposed to 'come for her', after all, and we still saw it when we saw Lee's perspective) perhaps she did eject, and was picked up by the Cylon(s), who immediately jumped somewhere.

Yes, I know, it's a long shot, but you never know! Right? And besides, one comment in an interview I read (I believe jkthunder posted the link on a blog) said that:

(not exact quotations - this is from memory!) 'Katee Sackhoff has finished work for this season of Battlestar Galactica with an episode titled Maelstrom.'

This could mean that she will come back next season. Or at least in the possible upcoming movie... one can hope, right?

With whatever fate Kara "Starbuck" Thrace meets (or if she will appear no more, and she actually is dead), she will always be the best character on Battlestar, and she will still be there. Her death will cause ripples in the personalities of Lee, Sam, and Adama (not to mention her friends, Helo, Athena, etc.), which we have already seen, however slightly. That awesome scene at the end, with Adama putting Kara's idol thing on his model ship, then destroying it, showed just how much he cared for Kara, and how much he will miss her.

Rest in Peace, Kara Thrace.

So Say We All.
