Why I Didn't Like the Podrace
Hello everyone!

Well, it's good to be back. I haven't posted in months, and I'm so happy to finally have the time to come back here. It's really sad that my school has to be cancelled (due to weather) for me to come here again!

But anyways, I have a serious problem with the Ep. I podrace. I know a lot of people like it, but ever since I saw Ep. I in theatres with my Dad, those few (long, long...) minutes erk me. To me, it's kind of irrelevant to the overall plotline, and it doesn't - for lack of a better explanation - feel Star Wars-ey enough for me.

Honestly, the only thing relevant that resulted from the podrace were these things:
1) Anakin got freed because he won
2.1) The audience saw that Ani was strong in the Force and that
2.2) he was a good pilot.

None of the aforementioned things required a lot of time to demonstrate. I think they spent far too much time on this sequence. I would have been much happier if more screen time had been given to the final battle, or some more stuff with Sidous and Maul. I found their relationship very interesting, and I thought Maul got jipped. He was such an awesome character, and yet he hardly got anything to do. (But that's another entry, isn't it... ;))

So imagine my chagrin when I finally convinced my parents to buy me the Ep. I DVD (I had had the VHS since it came out, and my parents didn't seem to see why I needed two copies...). I opened the gleaming package, reveled in my victory for a few short moments, and put the disk in the player. I was ecstatic with the changes made, and then the podrace scene came up. I went to get a mid-movie snack, as I always did before in this sequence, and saw that there was some added stuff there. I thought, I guess this is kinda cool... we get to see some more of the other racers....

Then it kept going.

And going.

And going.

I don't generally have many complaints about add-ins or extras in 2nd release/edition movies, but this is one that I feel very strongly about. I guess I'll have to live with it... it's the way it is, now. (I guess I can get some more chocolate on my mid-movie snack break now, though... :D)

Am I alone in this, or are there other race-haters out there?? ?:|

May the Force be with You, Always!

I wish to propose for the reader's favourable consideration a doctrine which may, I fear, appear wildly paradoxical and subversive. The doctrine in question is this: that it is undesirable to believe a proposition when there is no ground whatever for supposing it true. I must, of course, admit that if such an opinion became common it would completely transform our social life and our political system; since both are at present faultless, this must weigh against it.

I thougt the podrace was entertaining, but they didn't need to extend it. I agree with you that there should be more about Darth Sidious and Darth Maul. In fact, I think that George Lucas should have let Darth Maul live at least until AotC. He was such a cool charachter.

There's always the option of fast forwarding the race and watching it in high speed. And if you're DVD player is anything like mine, there are multiple speeds that you can watch it at. But I do agree with you on the point of it being too long. i guess the point of the race was to show how difficult they are and why no human has ever been able to do it.

PS: I like the quote.

I enjoyed the podrace in TPM. I enjoyed the extension of the podrace even more. Also, you can always use the Fast Forward button to get past it.

Yeah, why did they extend it? When I first saw TPM I saw it in theaters and then my dad bought it on VHS for us. So I was so use to seeing it the way it was on VHS. Then when I finally bought it on DVD me and my dad were watching it and were like where did this come from? Plus they added to a few more scenes. But I wish they would have extended more of the scenes with Darth Maul and let him talk more!

OK I'm done now!

Thanks for the comments, guys!

Ya, mine can do that, but I irrationally feel bad when I do that... as if I'm cheating the Saga and the movie somehow. Yep, I'm that strange... ;)

But I wish they would have extended more of the scenes with Darth Maul and let him talk more!
I wholeheartedly agree. It would have been a lot more interesting if we had gotten to know him more. But then again, having him mysterious is kinda cool as well.

PS: I like the quote.
Thanks... it's one of my fav's.

Thanks again for all the comments, and MTFBWY!

I like the podrace, but it wouldn't have bothered me if they took off a bit of it and used the extra time for Darth Maul and Sidious. Plus add more Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon vs. Darth Maul battle footage.

Or take it out entirely, and show some other way that Anakin was special. They could use the extra time given to really flesh out the more interesting characters, and not leave them one-dimensional.

I can't even remeber what VHS stands for.

The podrace was fun, but they didn't need to extend it. Darth Maul is probably the coolest bad guy GL's come up with- after Darth Vader of course- and he needed a much bigger part. If only Dooku and Maul could have switched places, Maul was so much cooler.

And cool quote. The confusing ones are always the best.:p

I couldn't agree with you more. Although I thought the podrace action was well done, it was a bit too long in the movie, and to extend it on the DVD was just over the top. They already killed it by running it too long in the movie! With a little editing down it could have been excellent. Particularly editing out the two alien sportscasters... they were unbearable to watch.

And here, here to extending the battle with Maul and more Maul in general!

I can't even remeber what VHS stands for.

Am I the only one who loves Fode & Beed?

Anyhoo, I kinda think that all SW movies have a chase scene that could be "taken out" of the film, without damaging the plot. But they add so much fun! And the podrace is one of my faves for just that reason -- there's so MUCH going on, with so many aliens in the race and watching the race, that it's just a hoot.

I pretty much never knew. :D And good to hear you like the quote... the confusing ones are always the funnest to read.

I agree. It was a good premise and a good idea, and it was good... had it been about half the time.

But they add so much fun! And the podrace is one of my faves for just that reason
You've got a point, Stooge... that does make sense. But I still don't like it.;)

This is an interesting topic!

Up to that point, the story needed a little juice to keep it going. I think the podrace was a fun and entertaining side-story that helped add a little more epic feel to the movie. It expanded alot of Universe and introduced a few more characters. I don't know about you, but I liked the two-headed alien announcer. It reminded me of real life spectators. I love to make connections in the Star Wars movies to the outside world. It just makes it all the more real. As for the extended scenes, they aren't really needed. They just add a little more excitment.
