Favourite Quotes
Hello Everyone!

I recently finished reading Traitor from the New Jedi Order series, and it immediately became my #1 favourite Star Wars book (or any book, for that matter) of all time. As I was reading, I compiled a list of quotes from both Jacen, Vergere, and the narration that I thought were either clever or very meaningful. So here they are... let's see if you agree with me!

"Jacen reflected bitterly that a large part of growing up seemed to involve watching everything change, and discovering that all changes are permanent. That nothing ever chagnes back. That you can't go home again." (128)

"Nothing lasts forever. The only permanence is death." (129)

"He [Jacen] hated the universe. Hated everything about it: all the pointless suffering and empty death and all the stupid mindless mechanical useless laws and all the squirming blood-smeared ignorant life, hated the stony flesh under his feet and the air that he breathed, hated himself, hated even the hate he felt and suddenly he wasn't tired anymore, he wasn't confused anymore, everyting was simple, everythig was easy, everything made sense because hate was everything and everything was hate, and he didn't want to die anymore." (179)

"Call it the Universe, or the Force, or Existence: those are only words. They are half truths. Less. They are lies. The truth is always greater than the words we use to describe it." (271-2)

"But he knew this: life is more a matter of choosing than of knowing. He could never know the eventual destination of his path, but he could always choose in which direction to take each step." (284)

"He remembered that he didn't have to know what he was. All he had to do was decide." (283)

"He would never really know - could never really know - much of anything. Truth is elusive, and questions are more useful than answers." (284)

"'Does killing a dhuryam for a noble goal make it any less dead?'" (Vergere, 124)

"'If the Force is life, how can there be life without the Force?'" (Vergere, 66)

"'Everything I tell you is a lie.'" (Vergere, 26)

"Within this universe, there are traitors. One is a teacher, and a student; another is a student, and a teacher. One is a gardener. This universe falls toward another, wider universe: a universe that is a garden - which is still full of weeds." (292)

"'It is a hard universe. [...] No lesson is truly learned until it has been purchased with pain.'" (Vergere, 291)

"'The Yuuzhan Vong are fanatics. For the, everyting is Right or Wrong, Honorable or Evil, Truth or Blasphemy. When you fight fanatics, all you do is make them even more fanatic than they were when they started.'" (Jacen, 290)

May the Force be with you, Always, and see you at the Clone Wars premiere!!

Ahck. This makes me wish I hadn't skipped over the NJO and gone straight to the LotF series as I did. Stupid move, on my part. I kept wondering who this oh-so-important Vergere person was, so I settled for reading her article on wookieepedia, haha.

I'm going to have to back up and read all I've missed out on. Which seems to be a lot. Some of these quote are utterly depressing; others, mindblowing; and still others, a stab in the heart. I hatehatehate what Jacen becomes. ..yes, I really throw all of my emotions into what I read, lol.

But anway, great entry.

Ya I was going to skip NJO and then go straight into Legacy, but I couldn't bring myself to skip nearly 20 books of Star Wars goodness, so I bought them all over a few months time and dove in. I'm reading The Unifying Force right now (the last in the series) and it's taken me about a year total to read them all (maybe a bit more). I have all the Legacy series now except Invincible (I'm waiting for the paperback to come out) and I'm going read it next (probably after a few other SW books that have been pushed aside for a while b/c of NJO).

But read NJO!! It's totally worth it. MTFBWY!

I'm too impatient to wait for Invincible to come out on paperback, haha. I only just finished Revelation about .. four minutes ago, so that one's next on my list. I'm so stoked. Ah, but these books are so difficult to read for all the emotions running through them.

It's inevitable that I'll read NJO, I guess. I won't know what to do with myself after I finish LotF, so I'll backtrack a little and see what I missed out on. 20 books is a lot to skip! I'd love to get to know Jaina's, Zekk's, Jag's, Tahiri's, Pellaeon's (if he's even in the series) Mara's and even Jacen's characters that much better.

Traitor is truly a masterpiece, and definately one of the greatest of SW novels. It is a perfect rendition of the intricacies of the Force, and is a poignant account of the transformation of Jacen Solo from a joke-cracking, tree-hugging kid from Yavin IV, to a disillusioned and dangerous young man.

I'd start on Legacy immediately if I were you, and push all of the stand-alones aside for later! But I like 'em all, so no problem either way...:D

MTFBWY!

Pellaeon's (if he's even in the series)
Yes, he actually plays quite a big part in the last quarter of the series (he's in five or six books).

I'd start on Legacy immediately if I were you, and push all of the stand-alones aside for later!
That's probably what I'll end up doing, however I have so many older stand alones that have been collecting dust on my shelves for months (or even years, unfortunately), and I strangely feel that I'm neglecting them! Anyways, I'll have to see what I do...

MTFBWY, and thanks for all the comments!

Although I understand that Traitor is an important part of Jacen's story, I cannot make myself like it. I am absolutely put to sleep over the lack of starfighters and people other than Jacen, Vergere, and a little Ganner at the end. And the Ganner at the end isn't even snotty or sarcastic to lighten the book up. Its so dark and gloomy, I can't stand that book.
