Anakin's Fall
Hello everyone!

Seeing as school goes back for yet another year on Tuesday (for me at least), I figured I needed a good Star Wars fix before I got too bogged down with schoolwork and extra-curricular activities. So today I had a Prequel Trilogy marathon, and I got to thinking.

People so often pretend to be something they're not in order to please those around them. They wear certain clothes, say certain things, and do certain acts that they wouldn't normally consider doing. People do these things for several reasons, such as to please those around them, or for fear that they would be shunned or something similar if they didn't.

People who pretend to be something they're not often know exactly what they are doing, and one would tire of living a fake life very quickly. So therefore many people must pretend because they feel that they have no other choice.

Anakin was no different. He loved Padmé so deeply, and he had to hide it from everyone surrounding him - Obi-Wan, Yoda, and the entire Order itself. He knew that if he did not pretend to be something he was not, he would be expelled from the Order - the only family besides Shmi - he had ever known.

As he said back on Naboo, "We would be forced to live a lie... it would destroy us."

(I know that this has already been greatly discussed, but I'm coming to my point, I promise you....)

These thoughts began to fester around the time that Mace Windu had died, and Anakin was kneeling before the man who had just killed four of the greatest Jedi in the Order. Besides the fact that Anakin felt that he had no choice but to obey the Sith Lord standing before him, I think he was thinking that...

he didn't have to try anymore.

He didn't have to try each and every moment to pretend to be something he was not. Ever since he married Padmé, over three years before, he had been forced to keep up a façade for everyone around him, as did Padmé. I think that he had grown so tired of lying to everyone around him that he just didn't care anymore. He would do anything to be with the one he loved.

Proof: "I don't care if they know we're married."

After so long of pretending at the expense of his love, I think that at that moment, kneeling before Lord Sidious, that Anakin didn't care who he hurt, or who he betrayed... he just wanted to save Padmé's life, and live the rest of his life with her. He could not bear to keep pretending for everyone.

To sum it up, I think that just like Padmé lost the will to live, Anakin lost his desire and his will to go on living a lie that he knew he could not continue. He lost his will to keep feigning allegiance to the Jedi Order while the only thing he truly cared about anymore was not an Order at all, but a woman.

Padmé.

Comments, as always, are welcome. Have a good Labour Day weekend, everyone, and May the Force be with you, Always.

(PS have a good first day of school to all the younglings like me out there. ;))
