The Director of the Original SW is...
Hello everyone... again!

Yes, I know this is my second blog in about five minutes, but I'm just bursting with ideas this morning! (okay, maybe that's a bit of an exageration, but oh well!)

Yesterday, when I was at a Reach for the Top competition (I don't think this happens in the US - it could be under a different name), which is kind of like Jeopardy for kids - you just have to know random knowledge about pretty much everything. But anyways, we had our first competition yesterday, and I was appaled by one kids answer to a question.

Since we have to sub out (only 4 people play at a time), I was off, but one of the questions was "Who was the director of the original Star Wars?" One kid (not from my school, thank goodness) answered, quite confidently, "Ron Howard." I almost lost it. My mouth dropped, and I said, "What????", possibly a bit too forcefully. Then, after the time to answer had been expired, he said, "Oh, I'm so stupid! It's Steven Speilberg!" (sorry for the spelling) At that point, I hung my head and said, "George Lucas!!! It's George Lucas!!!"

This is what really got me - the kid argued with me! He said, "He just wrote it! He didn't direct it!" I wasn't going to argue with him, because I obviously knew I was right. But I kept thinking, How could someone - especially my age, and when a SW movie came out very recently - not know this?!

But then, when I was on, the very last question of the whole competition was, "What colour is Darth Vader's lightsaber?" I wanted to ask, "In what episode?" but I knew I would be wasting my time. It would have been very funny, though, seeing as one of my friends who was there is very much a SW fan as well. I very forcefully and confidently said, "RED!!" It was a great end to the competition, and we left smiling (even though we lost every game:_| )

Well, I think that's it for today. I've taken up too much of your time already. I'll just keep laughing at that boy...

Ron Howard? Steven Spielberg? Great directors both are. Great films both have made. But director of the original SW (ANH, as we know it!)? C'mon. That boy should be flogged! (only kidding, of course)

"Go look it up when you get home, nerfherder!" would have been a good retort to his failure to see the light. That would have gotten him thinking. But, then again, maybe not. You just can't convince some people of the truth.

I agree, JediMelindaWolf. I was going to give him some smart response, but you know how when you're in a situation and you're too dumbfounded to think of anything to say? That's deffinetly what happened. But I agree that you can't convince some people of the truth.

Now, now, we must educate the ignorant, not scorn them. ;)

GL wanted Spelberg to direct ROTJ, but didn't. Steven and George didn't really know each other well until after the original SW. I think Steven might have directed a scene in there somewhere... or maybe it was that George actually ended up directing a scene in ROTJ. I'm rusty on my trivia :p

Good job anyway, but like Stooge says...

Great kid! Don't get cocky.

Reach for the Top? This is Canadian right?
My Brother in Law was on this show with his three super intelligent friends about 30 years ago. They were all really confident until the cameras turned on, then they froze like deer in the headlights.
My bro in law ended up having to answer all the questions, and claims he answered 'Van Gogh' to every single art question because that was the only artist he knew.

They were slaughtered. :^O

The kid probably mixed it up with Indiana Jones.

"Who was the director of the original Star Wars?"

"What colour is Darth Vader's lightsaber?"

Man, and I thought "Why is Mace Windu's lightsaber purple?" was a stupid question. :|
