 | Obi-Wan's Popularity, or Everyone Loves Ewan |
If you've been keeping tabs on Hyperspace's ongoing polls on favorite characters and favorite quotes you'd have noticed--as the folks at the fan club have--that Obi-Wan Kenobi's popularity among fans has gone up exponentially. Going by the rather unscientific fan club polls, Obi-Wan had the most favorite quotes from the saga and won every poll on favorite character from each prequel film. His older persona Ben Kenobi even went up a few notches in ANH. Compare this to a poll the Star Wars Insider ran in 1998...ol' Ben ranked up there but not that high. Boba Fett got more votes than he did.
When AFI had its list of 100 Heroes and Villains in 2003, Luke was shamefully kept off the list (as was Leia) but looked who ranked at #15...Obi-Wan.
You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out the prequels have boosted Obi Love considerably. Before then, Obi-Wan had his fans but he was regarded as more of a second-tier character. The fans focused more on Luke, Han, Leia, and Vader. In fact I knew many Luke fans who loathed Obi-Wan because they regarded him as a lying, manipulative geezer who tried to use Luke as a tool of revenge against Anakin/Vader. No word on whether this perspective changed post-ROTS .
Obviously, having Obi-Wan at the forefront of the prequels helped his popularity. For the first time, we get to see him in his prime, doing all of the heroic stuff we'd wondered about when we saw Luke get all gushy over Ben fighting in the Clone Wars. Young Obi-Wan represents everything we thought the Jedi were supposed to be and everything we thought they believed in. The guy is a true believer in the Code, the Republic's ideals, Mom, apple pie, and lightsabers raised in the defense of the innocent. People love that.
But I also happen to think it has a lot to do with Ewan's appeal as a performer. He could play a serial killer and you'd still find some reason to like him. Even as an amoral junkie in Trainspotting, he was the most likeable character in the movie. Yeah, even more than Spud. He's a charmer. He's also hot. Not in the same way Hayden is, but he's a handsome fella in his own right with a great sense of humor. Even if he were uglier than a toad, I'd marry a guy who makes me crack up as much as Ewan does in some of his interviews. He seems rather uninhibited too, which is alluring. Aside from that, Ewan had the very difficult and scary task of stepping into a role made famous by a much-venerated actor and he pulled it off beautifully. Not only did he more than adequately fill those shoes, he made the younger incarnation of Obi-Wan his own.
Personally, I think Obi-Wan is one of the more complex characters in the saga. In my estimation he's basically a good fellow with flaws and misjudgments. You can see the moment in ROTS when he closes his heart off to Anakin and it's just as infuriating as it is heartbreaking. In ANH, Obi-Wan has become a Gandalf, an Allanon (from the Shannara series of books). He's a man who fights for good but still has his own agenda based on what happened in the past. He's not St. Obi the Blameless, but he's not on par with Palpatine either.
I don't know how fans will regard Obi-Wan 20 years from now, but it appears Lucas along with two fine actors have crafted a memorable, thought-provoking hero.

Yeah, I'm also wondering how Obi-Wan will factor in 5, 10, 20 years from now, when the Prequel's aren't so fresh in peoples minds. Not to mention how Star Wars TV characters will factor in, there's sure to be at least one cool one
I still say he won via Jedi Mind Tricks though, "You liked Vader? This isn't the poll you're looking for"

I think Kenobi is more of an " Every mans Jedi " than the other's, cool under pressure but kick's some tail when he has too. He's the Jedi I most identify with, he alway's does the right thing..... From a certian point of veiw.

Obi is the best, and Ewan was the right man to do him. I doubt that anyone could do Obi-Wan better than him, and he is a loveable character.

Osilio, I agree Ewan was an excellent choice. I can't imagine anyone else playing Obi-Wan in the prequels.
Who is Vader's father has a good point; there is something about Obi-Wan that makes him the most accessible of the Jedi to the audience. Whether one agrees with all of his actions or not, he always tries to do the right thing and we can see him struggling to do right by Qui-Gon and by Anakin.

Well, Ewan really plays it out. He made Obi-Wan live~
I love the Ewan-Kenobi very much.. I guess Ewan himself
is a key factor of people loving Obi-Wan

Obi-Wan was my second favorite character before ROTS, and he's my favorite now. I agree that Ewan was great, but for me, it's the fact that Obi-Wan has had a presence in all 6 films, and that once you see what he goes through--his whole character arc--you just have to feel for the guy. You don't understand what he's about until you see ROTS. I mean, when he said to Anakin, "I loved you," god, my throat closed up. What's more, his accomplishments and failures are equally dramatic, yet through all of it, he does as you say emody what we all think of as "The Jedi."
...Plus, who doesn't love the wise old man archetype?

Geez I thought I was the only fan of Ewan around here so I didn't say anything...Well what I've got to say is already said (that guy is HOT! I don't care if he's 34!) but seriously Obi had two contrasting personas (the painfully charming young Jedi and the wise old mentor) and that helps in adding dimension to Obi's character

oyjaswf, I'm pretty sure Ewan will be around a long time. I don't think he'll drop off into oblivion. Aside from being adorable, he's very talented, probably one of the best actors around today.

That's quite a big comfort, MissPadme, thanks!
shatterpoint282 you're a nice person! I am enjoying myself already!
Just curious, MissPadme, how did you come up with the name "Naboo Love Nest" ?
Still puberty hasn't been very kind to me I 'm just 12 and I'm going all gushy over Ewan already. Does anyone else think that Ewan's sort of awkward in Ep I, except when he's portraying a specific emotion?

shatterpoint282, point taken! Sure, few fans are as feverish SW fans aren't they? Maybe we can continue this discussion in one of MissPadme's later blogs, any suggestions?
Looks like I've stepped into a bigger world, eh? Do tell me what the blog features are like, I'm not exactly the favoured kid in the house so it's unlikely I'd get Hyperspace anytime soon
MissPadme, still i think "Love Nest" is quite intimidating to kids like me who don't care much for romance , plus it's a misnomer. Your blogs thankfully have nothing to do with mushy stuff

Lucas had to get a great actor to follow up Guiness. Lucas did an even more wonderful job in casting Neeson. Qui-Gon is very similar to Ben (not Obi-Wan) and their acting complements each other. "The circle is now complete" and Ben really resembles his teacher. Casting McGregor next to Neeson gave us an instant look at Obi-Wan as a boy and then as an old man. It kind of reminds me of the saying that "youth is wasted on the young" and McGregor did a great job in the PT.

jkelly, there is definitely an intentional connection between Qui-Gon and old Ben Kenobi. Qui-Gon mentored Obi-Wan and was in the end a tremendous influence on him. Over the course of the saga you can see that. There are differences of course, but you have a good point.

I'm a big fan of Ewan McGregor, but I must admit that I dislike the idealization of both the Obi-Wan and Yoda characters. I've noticed that fans tend to dismiss their flaws, in compare to other characters like Anakin or Mace Windu.

Yes, he's so funny! Really a great human being, too, and down-to-earth. And he did a remarkable job with Obi-Wan. But, heck, everyone loves a Highlander!

Mace Windu deserves to be critisized. His arrogance coupled with blindness and pride, are partly what brought the Order down to begin with.
