Dark Nest III: The Swarm War
I finally finished the book today.  Of the three Dark Nest books, I kind of like this one the best.  Not that it's a Pulitzer Prize winner or even among the upper echelons of SW EU, but definitely the best of the three.  I admit I wasn't terribly interested in bad bugs and those anal-retentive Chiss, but this one was paced a little bit better and wasn't too steeped into Killik kulture.  Also, Denning can still write Han and Leia pretty well.  There are even some genuinely funny moments, such as Jacen and Tenel Ka attempting to hide their illegitimate kid from everybody.  Okay, I thought it was funny.  *Shrug.*  I'm also happy with the Jedi finally moving away from the moral relativism introduced in the NJO.  Whew!  It took Luke, who really ought to know better, long enough to figure it out.  Not everything is resolved and some characters' fates are vague enough to bring them back in another book.

What I didn't like...the A/P stuff.  It actually goes to the heart of what I think hasn't worked out too well in EU books since the NJO, and that is the Skywalker clan actually feeling like a family.  I didn't like that the discovery of A/P's relationship are all from the darkest moments of ROTS and on top of that, they're inaccurate.  A lot of it is stuff that was eventually cut from the script, but apparently no one gave Denning the memo or took him to see the movie.  And why couldn't the editors have changed that before going to print?  Luke only sees the bad stuff out of context (and Artoo being around to conveniently record certain scenes grew to be far fetched).  Not that Luke would be entirely happy about what really transpired in ROTS, but all he does is get mad at Anakin and leaves it at that.  The whole thing serves only to erase Luke's doubts about Mara possibly being involved in Padme's death (apparently Luke can't add) and to test Jacen's reactions.  This is huge stuff, yet Luke isn't curious beyond absolving Mara, and Leia isn't involved at all.  Don't they care about their mother?  Don't they wonder what the hell led Anakin to this point?  I freakin' care more than they do!

The thing is, Denning also wrote the excellent Tatooine Ghost.  What happened, dude?

While I'm at it, can someone please find a way to write Jacen and Jaina to be likeable people?  And I'm tired of Luke getting pwned by everybody.

Next up, Outbound Flight[/i[.

On the whole, I enjoyed this series. I was not too sure about big bugs in space, but I thought it worked. I also am happy that Luke is getting back to what it really means to be a Jedi. Phew!!
I also liked seeing Luke find out his family... it's about time he found something out. I'm sure Leia will learn what she needs to from Luke when the time is right. He needed to know now. As far as the accusation that Mara had something to do with Padme's death, it's not that Luke can't add... the insuation is that Padme lived on after giving birth to the twins and went into hiding.
Mara could have been sent to kill Padme many years after the events of ROTS. Luke now knows that is not possible.

I really really liked Jaina in NJO and the whole Jaina-Jag thing just worked and then they go and mess it all up!!!!! what the heck! i couldnt wait for these and now i almost wish i never read them.I was a huge Anakin Solo fan in NJO he was so powerful and good and the relationship between him and Tahiri had very very good potential then they killed him off and i couldn't sleep for days. So For me Jaina was my last hope so i really hope they make her better in the LotF.

JediPug1, Luke should still have known better. Leia told him in ROTJ that her mother, meaning their mother, was dead since she was "very young." Meaning Mara would have also been "very young." What, did he think she was fibbing? Or did he forget?

Anakins Keeper, I liked Anakin Solo too.

That makes me MAD.

Here Luke and Leia are learning something really big about their family, and once again, Luke is focused on Mara -- and Leia is left out in the cold.

It's bad enough that Del Rey is more interested in putting out a book about friggin' Mara "at the height of her powers as Emperor's Hand" than in exploring truly interesting and worthwhile subjects, like Luke and Leia meeting their Naberrie relatives. No, they've got to dismiss the entire subject of Luke and Leia finding out about their parents.

it would appear there will never be a worthwhile book about Padme written, that is sad.. everything done to her character after the Clone Wars CN is just sad and poorly taken care of.. every bit of fan fiction I read about Padme after the Clone Wars is better than what wound up happening in the movies or the SWEU..

I was first very excited to be reading the dark nest trilogy when I heard it had snippets of holograms of Padme' .. after hearing what it entailed and how Luke received it.. I feel cheated once again.. cheated out of anything worth reading about the mother of the skywalker twins.

jedicathiecat, Padmé hasn't been explored much in the EU, which is unfortunate. With a good author who really likes the character, I think there's a lot you could write about her.

As sad as it is, I have no problems with Padmé's fate in the films. I figured she wasn't going to come to anything other than a tragic end.
