Agent of Change
Someone (perhaps millions of someones) beat me to the comparison a while back, but that's because it's a central concept for us Star Wars fans.

Today marks a new day for America and the world, "a day long remembered" as we like to say. Today, no matter which side of the aisle you may fall, or even if you find yourself hovering above it hurling admonishments to all politicians, today Real Change happens. Something that has never happened before, and future history has yet to reveal if it will ever happen again.

In the perspective of decades, I think few saw this coming, and few know how it happens - that being Real Change. Change born of a time when we many saw dark horizons and few deviations to our course. Change inserting itself into the hearts of a long-embattled citizenry. Change spreading like a virus through a stagnated thought pool. Change in leadership, change in ideas, and change as a surprising turn of destiny.

Our beloved films have a way with bringing us to the darkest moments of those stories, moments in which, when we first saw them, we were absolutely certain there was no way out, no one would survive. And then the George would surprise us, using the tragedy against its own nature, turning it into Hope. Episode's I to III are all about that descent. And from A New Hope to Return of the Jedi, we see the relentless ascent of right over wrong, and the inevitability of the meek inheriting all.

But even so, the final act had its own deep fissures in the crust of Hope. All was darkness, the Empire was almighty despite the best efforts to tear it down. We all remember that moment - we were perhaps surprised when we first took it in - when it seemed like Luke was destined to fall to grim darkness, and everything we had emotionally invested in was absolutely locked onto a path of destruction.

...There is no escape, my young apprentice, " the Emperor said.

The Alliance will die...as will your friends."

Words, like granite, falling from the pulpit of absolute power. And then Luke did something not done before. He chose the path not yet taken, the one between destructive revenge and bitter retreat, the one that called upon the hero's heart to Return.

Today, we live just such a moment. We don't know yet which path he will choose. We don't know yet if he is made from the legacy of failure, or born anew with the fire of future success. But we do know this - today marks Real Change.

I am a Republican, from Texas. I voted for McCain. But I am proud today to see our new President sworn in as a source of Potential, an agent of Change. He has already changed the status quo just by arriving at this day. And now, I am hopeful. Because despair is a sin, and hope is eternal.

Here's to our New Hope. Here's to Barack Obama, 44th President of The United States of America.

Very well-put, Moose. Change is going to happen, and we don't know what change, but it will happen. Like you, I'm also a Republican and voted for McCain, but I will sincerely support our new President because he is our leader - I may not always agree with his practices and policies, but that's what makes this a free country, and one in which I'm proud to live.

Cheers to Barack Obama :D

I wish Obama well in his presidency. I hope this "change" he wants for the country is not a bad one. Only time will tell.

In keeping with the comparison, it is perhaps very appropriate that the chamber composition made expressly for this inauguration event, "Air and Simple Gifts" played by masters including Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma, is composed by none other than our own John Williams, who likewise gave us Luke's theme.

It's really quite beautiful.

I like the way Obama is inspiring people, but...well, I like the way he's inspiring people. 'Nuff said.

Hear, hear. I think you speak for a lot of Americans who might not embrace our new President, but still welcome today as an opportunity for optimism.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt, for the time being. Already he has tarnished his reputation. The innaugeration ceremony has been far to large. It was required viewing for my school which seems rediculous to me.

Not a Republican from Texas here, but I feel pretty much exactly the same - and I think that speaks to what not only the nation, but the entire world is collectively feeling right now.

Congratulations for this. This attitude is what makes democracy and your country great. From my FFA country, I am happy for you US citizens and for the rest of the world. Obama has brought hope to the world, in these dark times.

(con'd) We in Europe welcome a person with multicultural experiences and trusting dialogue and negotiation. IMO, this is the right attitude in our current world and time. Enjoy this happy moment. Dialogue with friends is easy, dialogue with ennemies is what can make you a greater country, from an ethical and political POV.

even if you find yourself hovering above it hurling admonishments to all politicians,

They're politicians and not to be trusted.

It is nice to see so much optimism about a new administration, but only time will tell, as it is with all changes.

Looks like your class should have been studying spelling instead. :D (Not a knock on you, but a stab at the education system)

I was explaining to my youngling why people were so excited yesterday, and part of what I said was that Obama represents hope and change. My hubby then chimed in with "Yeah, Mommy thinks he's a Jedi". Hey, if the lightsaber fits... ;)
Of course, I don't idealize Obama like that, but I do hope he'll bring some much-needed change.

I read a bit on the front cover of today's New York Times while I was standing in line for my chai tea latte at Starbucks, and I was struck by the description of Obama family members in attendance at yesterday's inauguration. Our new President's extended family transcends race and creed and ethnicity in ways that made me exclaim out loud, "Wow."

In the perspective of decades, I think few saw this coming

...but in all that it says about the greatness of this country, thank goodness it has.

May President Obama make the very best of it.

It's wonderful - that one individual can be an inspiration. :)

It is up to the rest of us, however, to pick up the baton and do our own part. One individual cannot carry the load of everyone forever.
