As seen in the gripping multi-part Droidumentary
"R2-D2 - Beneath the Dome" , we know our truncated friend can be a bit of an astromechanical drama-droid.
Most concerning was his fall from the limelight after the Original Trilogy. Though I have not been able to reach Paul Ens for comment, it is rumored R2's problems reached far deeper during the apparent collapse of his career. R2 surely was destitute, jobless, and spiraling into unknown robotic depths of depression. But I wonder if the other rumors are true - the ones about R2 rolling the Silicon Valley streets after hours, turning chips to score program fixes.
As the film infers, maybe it was the fame, or the pressure, or the sudden decompressive effects of anonymity as he realized he was essentially typecast - forever to play a feisty bucket of bolts.
So if that was true then, what happens to him now that the saga is complete? I wonder if our beloved R2 has backslid. I haven't seen him in the news, or any commercials lately. He hasn't been doing any interviews or guest appearances. I haven't seen him once on Leno or Conan.
Has anyone checked on him? Certainly after his last episode of decline, he has a personal handler - rather like Vanilla Ice would have had after his career went the way of frosted flat top haircuts.
Just the same, I think we should all be ready to help. Does anyone know how to do an intervention in binary?
Here's to hoping R2 is ok...
I think that calls for a drink.
