And It's Away...
I haven't felt that much tension since I witnessed the first Space Shuttle launch in 1981, which ironically was the same shuttle that shelved the program and ended 7 lives more than 2 years ago.

It's a great day for NASA, and a great day for humankind that we can overcome our fears and tribulations to reach beyond our planet again. It puts us just a little closer to merging the pure fantasy of Star Wars to the reality of our own boring little planet.

17,500 mph and climbing, booster and tank separation good, spirits are high, and Discovery is in flight.

Rejoice, and remember, humans :0) And here's to a safe return.

Thank God. My stomach was so queasy I thought I might possibly get sick if anything went wrong. Now we get to wait 2 weeks to go through it again!

True dat. No anomalies during liftoff, so hopefully that increases their chances of a safe landing as well. They had cameras all over that thing, especially the wings and tanks, and everything looked perfectly intact. I wonder now if the fuel guage worries are completely forgotten now that the launch is complete - I believe that was an issue with the tank, not the onboard fuel. I think...

Also on this flight lives the memories of the astronauts that died on coulimbia during re-entry two years ago. May those in space return home safely and may those that are on the ISS be able to do their work with the new parts that the space shuttle is taking them

One day we will develope the technology to pass our own atmosphere. Instead of relying on machines an probes we can then explore space on our own.

Hi DM!! I posted a thread about my contest, an I'm waiting for it's approval. I ran out of space so as soon as I can I will go into more detail about it.

Thank you Moose for bringing this important subject to the forefront.
We can sit on our butts all we want in the movie theatre watching our Star Wars movies, but isn't it rather important to actually GO to space ourselves? I really believe many people have forgotten that.

I think actually the crew feels NASA is being overly anxious. I think it will be just fine, and they've proven now they can make some limited inspections and repairs in orbit.
