Dark Moose Tries Fan Fic (aka "Fafdic")
All this talk lately about fan fiction, from why it's good to why we should share it to how to properly post it while avoiding getting smacked for "Terms of Use" violations on creative submissions, has finally made this moose decide to go ahead shove some onto his own rudimentary proto-site.

Feel free to explore the site, and to check out my fan fic title "Rebels in the Empire". I've uploaded installment #1 of what should be a lengthy enterprise.

Note to self, and to readers - this is totally an experiment. It's nowhere near even trying to appear to resemble anything approaching being official in any capacity, and is likewise completely unsolicited and therefore just plain old amateur nonsense.

That being said, I welcome your advice and comments. It took a lot of nerve on my part to even attempt fiction, so I'll tell you right now - I don't yet enjoy doing it, and it feels a bit unnatural. I'm a strictly editorial kind o' moose.

Nevertheless, I want to share this here, plus demonstrate the proper way to bring people your fan fiction while not breaking the rules of the site.

So don't laugh! Snicker, discuss behind my back, occasionally pelt me with eggs from unseen locations, but do not openly guffaw and point. That's all I ask. It sucks, so you've been warned.

If in the odd chance you like what you're reading, every once in a while I'll add a couple of chapters, and that will constitute an "installment". The idea is to eventually have strung together 3 distinct parts. Sort of a small trilogy. I don't anticipate this to be anywhere near a full-length work (what I would consider at least 250 to 300 pages per "book"). It's just an excercise to stretch part of my brain I haven't used in a while.

Important Note:
You'll need Adobe PDF reader to view this file. If you don't have it, go to the Adobe site here.

Pick your correct opeating system if you don't have XP. It's available on most platforms. It just takes a couple of seconds to install, and the result is you'll have an easier to read e-book. My advice, uncheck the "Adobe toolbar" and any other offers for a faster, smaller download.

If for some reason you've got the reader but still can't get to it, drop me a line. I'll try to fix it, before giving up because I'm clueless.

You have been duly warned. Enjoy :0)

Or not.

Thanks,

PS-

For an explanation of the new "FAFDIC" phenomenon sweeping the fictional world, see Karen Traviss' entry here. ;0) Kudos to folks like Karen Traviss and Halagad for encouraging the aspiring writers in all of us.

UPDATE - 11/2/2005:
After seeing the deleted scenes for the first time on the new Episode III DVD, new material has come to light.

Granted, not all of the scenes are presented as "canon" within the continuity of the saga (see Shaak Ti scene). However, the storyline regarding the birth of the Rebellion in the form of the delegation of the 2000 is something more integral to the saga. I can see it easily being brought back from the editing room floor and into the mainstream storyline via the upcoming television releases and books. If it's not canon now, it should be, or perhaps will be. These scenes brought to light some alterations to at least my known timeline for the events leading up to the demise of the Senate in Episode IV.

This must be just a taste of what it's like for an actual commission EU author or continuity wrangler. Three chapters into a work, release of official Lucasfilm information can skew your plot. You have to feel for the folks who do this for a living when that happens :0)

I'll have to radically re-work the first installment to fall in line with this alteration, so I'll put this on hold for now - shame, because I really had some cool stuff planned. Recently Karen Traviss had some good advice aobut situations just like this, saying that it's best to just write and not worry about continuity. I agree with this advice - I mean, it's not like this will ever be official or published anyway. However, I'm at a point now where I can re-work the concepts at the beginning to make it fit, rather than work all the way through to the end knowing the entire thing couldn't possibly exist anyway :0)

It's an excercise in what it must be like for a real author to have to make major changes and still bring it around to your original ideas.

So - we'll see. If you see the deleted scenes, and read my first installment, you may see the timeline issue right away.

c'est l'moose vie.

UPDATE - 11/18/2005:
After further review, I think the changes are going to be quite minimal. Chalk that up to a little moosely over-reaction, but I think it's possible to gel the revelations of the deleted scenes quite nicely with what I have here, given a couple of well-placed bits of dialogue and or narrative. No big whoope.

Hopefully this weekend I'll find some peace and quiet to pound out the next installment. I'm getting in the mood for a type-fest. We'll see if everyone else has plans for me to do otherwise.

So, you once again have my blessings to go check out my fafdic. It' ain't perfect, and its a work in progress. But if you're bored, it's better than counting arm hairs.

May the fafdic be with you
