Dark Moose Tries Fan Fic (aka "Fafdic")
All this talk lately about fan fiction, from why it's good to why we should share it to how to properly post it while avoiding getting smacked for "Terms of Use" violations on creative submissions, has finally made this moose decide to go ahead shove some onto his own rudimentary proto-site.

Feel free to explore the site, and to check out my fan fic title "Rebels in the Empire". I've uploaded installment #1 of what should be a lengthy enterprise.

Note to self, and to readers - this is totally an experiment. It's nowhere near even trying to appear to resemble anything approaching being official in any capacity, and is likewise completely unsolicited and therefore just plain old amateur nonsense.

That being said, I welcome your advice and comments. It took a lot of nerve on my part to even attempt fiction, so I'll tell you right now - I don't yet enjoy doing it, and it feels a bit unnatural. I'm a strictly editorial kind o' moose.

Nevertheless, I want to share this here, plus demonstrate the proper way to bring people your fan fiction while not breaking the rules of the site.

So don't laugh! Snicker, discuss behind my back, occasionally pelt me with eggs from unseen locations, but do not openly guffaw and point. That's all I ask. It sucks, so you've been warned.

If in the odd chance you like what you're reading, every once in a while I'll add a couple of chapters, and that will constitute an "installment". The idea is to eventually have strung together 3 distinct parts. Sort of a small trilogy. I don't anticipate this to be anywhere near a full-length work (what I would consider at least 250 to 300 pages per "book"). It's just an excercise to stretch part of my brain I haven't used in a while.

Important Note:
You'll need Adobe PDF reader to view this file. If you don't have it, go to the Adobe site here.

Pick your correct opeating system if you don't have XP. It's available on most platforms. It just takes a couple of seconds to install, and the result is you'll have an easier to read e-book. My advice, uncheck the "Adobe toolbar" and any other offers for a faster, smaller download.

If for some reason you've got the reader but still can't get to it, drop me a line. I'll try to fix it, before giving up because I'm clueless.

You have been duly warned. Enjoy :0)

Or not.

Thanks,
DM out

PS-

For an explanation of the new "FAFDIC" phenomenon sweeping the fictional world, see Karen Traviss' entry here. ;0) Kudos to folks like Karen Traviss and Halagad for encouraging the aspiring writers in all of us.

UPDATE - 11/2/2005:
After seeing the deleted scenes for the first time on the new Episode III DVD, new material has come to light.

Granted, not all of the scenes are presented as "canon" within the continuity of the saga (see Shaak Ti scene). However, the storyline regarding the birth of the Rebellion in the form of the delegation of the 2000 is something more integral to the saga. I can see it easily being brought back from the editing room floor and into the mainstream storyline via the upcoming television releases and books. If it's not canon now, it should be, or perhaps will be. These scenes brought to light some alterations to at least my known timeline for the events leading up to the demise of the Senate in Episode IV.

This must be just a taste of what it's like for an actual commission EU author or continuity wrangler. Three chapters into a work, release of official Lucasfilm information can skew your plot. You have to feel for the folks who do this for a living when that happens :0)

I'll have to radically re-work the first installment to fall in line with this alteration, so I'll put this on hold for now - shame, because I really had some cool stuff planned. Recently Karen Traviss had some good advice aobut situations just like this, saying that it's best to just write and not worry about continuity. I agree with this advice - I mean, it's not like this will ever be official or published anyway. However, I'm at a point now where I can re-work the concepts at the beginning to make it fit, rather than work all the way through to the end knowing the entire thing couldn't possibly exist anyway :0)

It's an excercise in what it must be like for a real author to have to make major changes and still bring it around to your original ideas.

So - we'll see. If you see the deleted scenes, and read my first installment, you may see the timeline issue right away.

c'est l'moose vie.

UPDATE - 11/18/2005:
After further review, I think the changes are going to be quite minimal. Chalk that up to a little moosely over-reaction, but I think it's possible to gel the revelations of the deleted scenes quite nicely with what I have here, given a couple of well-placed bits of dialogue and or narrative. No big whoope.

Hopefully this weekend I'll find some peace and quiet to pound out the next installment. I'm getting in the mood for a type-fest. We'll see if everyone else has plans for me to do otherwise.

So, you once again have my blessings to go check out my fafdic. It' ain't perfect, and its a work in progress. But if you're bored, it's better than counting arm hairs.

May the fafdic be with you

Coolio - let me know what you think. It's only about 35 novel length pages so far, and its just up to a convenient stopping point.

Oh, and by the way, since Geocities tends to suck sooo much, there is a data transfer limit. So if you can't get to it, try it again later. Sorry - stupid free site.

Toopie, *chuckles*
It's probably better than I could do and I'm no writer so take my advice with a grain of salt.
You're very light on description, Zas had patchy black hair and Toopie (teehee) isn't expressly identified as a protocol droid until the bottom of page 3.
Other than that it all seems like fairly standard fair to me, nothing to scoff at really.
The reference to Anakin as the Hero with no Fear is a nice tie to the EU.

Yeah - I tend to gloss over and add into it as I go along. I've noticed the same thing, so we're on the same page - my characters lack a little "depth", I think because I'm sacrificing development for pace. Bubblegum, in other words. :0) But there ya go. I appreciate your advice - it's helpful, and more imortantly, it's true.

"Toopie" is just one of a few references that you'll find in this thing that's..well..not so serious :0) Let's face it, you gotta stick within your style, and I have a tendency to throw in a joke or two with my seriousness. Chuckles are standard equipment :0) a departure, perhaps, from the common SW fictional work.

Well the only reason I made serious note of the lack of early description is that I had to read "Lo-CAY-Shon" (or however you conveyed the manner of speech, data transfer limit is indeed already exceeded) 3 times before I realized it was "Location" and not some form of say... Huttese. Maybe I'm just tired :)

Something akin to Samwise's "po-tay-toes?" :0)

And when I say "imortantly", of course am referring to a little known fafdic term :0) Spork by no means has a corner on the expedient typing market :0)

Wow, nice work dude. It kept me interested, something many Star Wars books can't do. Good job. If you want to see my fafdic, you should go here. Nobody bothered to read it on the TFN board. Mine is about clones, and grievous, although I'm nowhere near done.

Thanks dude. I'm trying to go in an interesting direction with the story, one that hasn't exactly been explored before. Also, any problem in my writing, like, is it obvious that I'm fifteen to you by reading that?

Argh... I still haven't finished yours. I'm going to print that out today and read it tonight. I couldn't last night, because i was too busy finishing Vision of the Future. Until my new jedi order books come, I've got nothing starwarsy to read, besides your fafdic.

No, age isn't evident in your writing, though in a laboratory like SW it may be more difficult to see that. I can say I've seen young writers in SW and could see telltale stylistic cues, which you don't appear to have. I don't see any probs in your writing save perhaps what plagues me - character development. If its a short story, though, there isn't time to develop the characters. In lieu of that, though, you've gone to the next best thing - the clones names tell a lot don't they? Good names!

Argh... I still haven't finished yours.

No prob, it's a little long-winded. :0)

Nice work Moose! I liked the paragraph about heroes the best. I am always curious to read how the Jedi were viewed by regular citizens. The Hero with no Fear thing about Anakin is a nice tie to the EU, which I totally dig. Keep it up my brother! MTFBWYB-)

Thanks for reading it :0) Even that brief mention on those heros will prove to be extremely important and central to the plot later.

Actually, I'm all confused now. DM, I'm gonna need some guidance here. I've been looking forward to reading your fan fiction (er, I mean fafdic, heh heh, it is fun to tease Dark Spork - cause she can take it) but now, I'm wondering on something.

Would it be better to wait until you have made your updates (revisions), or should I just go ahead and jump into the story you've got started? Keep in mind D525 has a very one track mind - if you change the story, it will fry some circuits.

Hmmm....after some time to think things over as to how the new info affects things, I've decided that the changes I make will be miniscule - just enough to make it better fit the deleted dvd material. But essentially, I think it will stay the same. I'll change my update, and of course once I put in the changes there will be no need for the disclaimer.

I think in the end analysis, you may not even notice the change. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I just had to work it out in my head. Feel free to forge ahead..it's not that great anyway :0) Well, not yet. I hope I have time to work on it this week...

Hey, that was actually pretty good! I liked the whole senator part and Leia arguing with that one dude(I forgot his name), it reminded me of Padme, which was good. I'm also working on a fadfic, but it isn't posted anywhere. I wouldn't want anyone to read it, since it hacks up the EU. Anyways, I hope someday you people will read it. Then I can be an author and everyone can say how good it is and all that junk, while I think it is the worst story ever. What am I even saying? Well, good job, and I'm eagerly waitin for more!

Hey DM - I finally got around to reading your first installment of Rebels in the Empire. Of course, it's a little rough around the edges, but I really enjoyed it. A couple of points that I really liked was the Senator remembering when got Anakin's autograph (like we did as kids with pro athletes, that was a cool touch) and the predicament that faced the Senators at the time of your story. They were despised by everyone - those that were loyal to the Old Republic felt the Senators failed democracy, and those loyal to the Empire felt the Senators were only hindrances to progess.

One request: how bout a little more action. The scenes with Corporal Neebo certainly got intense, and that was very interesting. But, well, the Senate scenes read a little more like C-Span than Star Wars. Maybe we need a car chase or two. ;)

Anyway, I did notice there is a bit of conflict with timeline here. If this story is set 20 years after the end of the Clone Wars - wouldn't that put us after the Battle of Yavin? It feels like your story is set a few years prior to Leia stealing the Death Star plans.

All in all, I think your story is off to a good start. I look forward to reading more.
