 | Moose Mind Trick |
If you've never seen this before, this might freak you out a little.
If you have seen it before, shyush and let folks marvel at the amazing telepathic photosensitive capabilities of computer screens.
The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be... unnatural...
Or not.
I know how it works. Oh yes - I know your sly little tricks you magicians of the IP realm. Of course it took me 12 tries to figure it out, though... after doing everything from "blind" control experiments (meaning covering my screen with a folder so that the mind rays couldn't get to me or read my eye movements) to purposefully picking random numbers from phone numbers on my caller ID to getting the math wrong on purpose.
It seriously creepified one of my web developers, and he's a 43 year old ...did I mention he's a web software developer?
The first few times will make you want to wrap yourself and your computer in tin foil. If you do this, remember to poke airholes.

I'm going to leave it a mystery, but I guarantee someone else out there already knows how it works. But I'll reveal it once enough people are sufficiently freaked out huddled and rocking in the dark corners of their rooms sucking their thumbs.
..which I didn't do, of course...but still.

whenever you do 77, I gives you 54-- I tried this 4 different times, and got the same result
Hehehe...
How the heck.... I only tried it twice
*toots his own horn* I'm pretty I get how it works, and I only tried it twice... then again, I've done mind games similar to this before, so I knew what sorts of things to look for.

I beat it! ha! 77, -14, = 53 and it gave me 54!
whenever you do 77, I gives you 54
Huh? 77 - 14 = 63.
Anyway, yeah, I did 77 four times and it picked the symbol above 63. The symbols changed, but it picked the same number. Genius!

No time to start getting smart Sol.
I once new a formula that figured this kind of thing out. I'm pretty sure I left it in my Statistics notebook which I'm fairly certain I burned when finished with the class.

Actually, it has everything to do with your eye color. No, WAIT! The length of your fingernails. No... that's not it.... what you ate for lunch?
Nah. I passed this link on to my father many moons ago. He's an engineer/mathematician and loves to sap all the mystery out of stuff like this. I'll never tell how it works because sometimes its more fun to believe in magic.
Or not.

Most annoying thing about it, it can only be explained using algebra (the getting to the symbols part) - and as we all know, algebra is what Palpatine was referring to in his 'unnatural' speech.

I figured it out. Only took me fifteen minutes, which shows you what a math geek I am. That, and the fact that the symbols changed every time. It has to do with multiples of nines.

very smart. thanks Daramis, your clue helped me solve it
hint: dont pick a number, and whan the symbol show up, find the number that it represents
oh, and the symbol/number relationships change every time

It didn't work right for me! At first it did, though. I think it has something to do with placing your cursor on a symbol.

Nothing like that. Try just looking at a random symbol. If you do that, there's a 1/9 chance that the symbol shown is the symbol you were watching. Helpful hint?

60
6 + 0 = 6
60 - 6 = 54
No, that's correct.

OK, the way I see it, and I'm not sure I'm right, but I only worked it out when it was to late to beat the first time, but the second time confirmed my belief, it has to do with the mouse's position on the screen, when you look for your number, you subconsiously move your mouse to the corresponding symbol, and so that is what it comes up as, and incidently, I chose 77 on my first go and it was right, because I had my cursor over the symbol, but the next time I out it over a different one, and that is what it showed

Ooor - how bout not? But thanks for playing.
The secret, of course, is that there are only so many answers to the original equation, and though the symbols change, they are the same symbols for those specific answers - basically, you can't not pick a correct answer. If you do your math correctly, you will get one of a few answers, all with the same symbol.
:0)
No mind trick, no tricky cursor tracking, no rays coming out of your computer screen. Just one big waste o' time :0)
