Star Wars...just a little, only a lot...and then some. Times 2!

It all makes sense now...The truth behind Darth Plagueis (warning...spoiler)!
So I've been reading Star Wars: Labyrinth of Evil. Great book so far...obviously. I just passed this part in the book talking about Sidious, and it says, "Of his youth, Sidious had offered little these past thirteen years; of his Master, Darth Plagueis, even less." So we know for a fact that Plagueis not only did exist, but was in fact Sidious's Master.

Now onto the interesting stuff.

At the opera house, Palp told Anakin the story of Plaguies. We all know the story, and why Palp told Ani.

When Anakin turned to the dark side, Sidious said that only one knew how to cheat death...but at the opera house, he said that Plaguies taught his apprentice everything, which meant two people knew how to cheat death.

So here's my theory: Plaguies never knew how to manipulate the midi-chlorians or the force to create life or prevent death. The story was just a ploy that Palp/Sidious used to lure Anakin to the dark side. Obviously, it worked.

well, it seems obvious to me that if Palpatine / Sideous didnt know how to "cheat" death, he at least knew enough to extend it to live a LONG time....he was OLD in Ep. III and ANCIENT by ROTJ...who knows how long he would have lived on had not Vader thrown him over that ledge?

Although Im sure Sideous EXAGERATED his abilities to keep Padme alive quite a bit...

I think you are half right. I think Palp lied about cheating death to lure in Anakin, but not about creating life. The story line from Lucas was that Palp created Anakin. He even had it in the 1st draft of Ep. III. From the IMDB: "The first draft of the script also explained the mystery surrounding Anakin's conception. In the confrontation scene between Anakin and Palpatine he would also explain that he used the power of the Force to will the midichlorians to start the cell divisions that created Anakin. This explanation was later deemed unnecessary by George Lucas and subsequently cut."

I havent read this book yet, but i always thought Palpatine lied a bit to Anakin at the Opera House. He said 'he taught his apprentice everything' so it would be assumed that Palaptine knew how to cheat death...BUT......

After Anakin has been named Darth Vader, Palpatine says:

'To cheat death is a power that only only one has achieved. But if we work together, I we can uncover the secret.'

So which one is the LIE - Palpatine knowing how to cheat death - or not knowing how to cheat death (hope that make sense).

I personally think Palpatine didnt know how to cheat death. As he keeps on twisting the story as shown in the dialogue he wrote down.

Palps did know how to cheat death. In the novel Ep. lll Palps finds Vader's burned torso on the black sandy beach and uses his power by putting his hand on his forehead and is quoted by saying "he puts his Will apon him.... Live lord vader...Live"

Palpy ment that he was the only LIVING person who teach him. I think that he needed Vader so they together can find how to do it. After that, Vader was no longer needed by Palpy and he tried to lure Luke to the darkside to replace Vader.

This issue is one of the most fascinating of the saga. WHAT did Sidious mean, exactly, and what are the implications? Personally, I think Sidious was lying through his not-yet-rotten teeth about a lot of what he said at the opera house, and he lied to lure Anakin to him.

It also occurs to me that Palp didn't say to Anakin "only my Master has achieved", he said "only one has achieved". I wonder if he wasn't talking about Plaguies at all. No doubt Palp was very powerful in the Force. Is it possible that he sensed that Qui-Gon had discovered how to "return from the netherworld of the Force"? Is it possible that he lied about Plaguies cheating death to lure Anakin, but sensed that a Jedi had somehow done it and was determined to find out how?

cont'd... In the book Qui-Gon says that "eternal life is the ultimate goal of the Sith, yet they can never achieve it; it comes only by the release of self, not the exaltation of self. It comes through compassion, not greed. Love is the answer to the darkness." If this is true then Plaguies could not have cheated death. Palp must have sensed Qui-Gon. Anyway, that is my pet theory for the day.

I think its pretty clear by the dialogue that Sidious didnt know how to cheat death, he may have had bits and pieces but not a true working theory, but he lied to twist Anakin to his wishes. Now if you follow EU he does learn how to transfer his conciousness into cloned bodies which is how he returns 6 years after his death. This may have been a skill that he learned well after Anakins turn to the dark side.

Its said that once Vader was in place as the figurehead of the empire and the senate was gone and basically everything was as he wanted it, he took more and more time travelling to ancient Sith worlds and other places in search of texts and artifacts (holocrons) to learn more and discover new powers which is probably where he learned his skill to "cheat death".

wasnt there a miniseries in the EU that said that the Emperor used the force to transfer his consciousness into clones of himself? so, from a certain point of view, he did know how to do it, but why teach an apprentice he was merely using?

ahuggins, your argument that he learned through sith holocrons does not make sense to me, because Palpatine did not say that other sith new how to cheat death, so why would they put that kind of information into holocrons?

Here's my take on it...Palpatine was telling the truth that he had a master named Darth Plagueis, and that he killed him in his sleep, something I'm sure he's quite proud of.

As to all that crap about using the midichlorians to *create* and prolong life, that was just a bunch of crap to lure Anakin in. Total manipulation.

However...

I think it is VERY possible that the Sith for some reason did believe that using the force to attain physical immortality COULD be possible, and that perhaps some ancient Sith Lord did discover the secret. It was lost to the mists of time. If some Sith Lord DID discover the scret, I can't see him sharing it with the other Sith.

About Palpatine's stated goal to learning immortality, I believe he was quite sincere in this.

I read some where that Darth Sidious was the strongest SITH ever ; if this is true then its very possible that he did, at least to a certain point. he wasnt able to save his body from death on the second death star but he did save his spirit. remember? he came back on Byss in one of his clones.
