Pros and Cons of the PT, Part 2
So here comes part 2 of my pro and con list. Today we will be discussing Episode II: Attack of the Clones.

So some of the things that come up a lot in the discussions with my friends include the casting of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, that really cheesy love story between Anakin and Padme, and a few other minor details.

So let's start off with my favorite character in the saga: Anakin Skywalker.

A lot of people have complained about casting HC for the coveted role of Anakin Skywalker. As most of us know, a ton of huge names tried out for this role, but GL gave the part to a relatively unknown Hayden Christensen. While I can say that I'm am biased about this (as a member of LILWA), I agree with GL's casting choice.
Now step back for a moment and look at the actual character. He was relatively old when he joined the Jedi ranks. He had time to know his mother, and develop a childhood crush on Padme, which pretty much never ended. In this episode, Anakin was a teenager (okay 19, but most of us aren't completely mature at that age). Teenagers have a tendency to be whiny and wish that they could get separated from the adults and live their own lives. Anakin was under the supervision of Obi-Wan, and watching the movie, we know that he was a bit hard on him.
So now put yourself in that situation. Think about it. You'd probably be whiny too.
If you still don't agree with me, go watch some of HC's other movies. I highly suggest Life As A House (I'm actually watching it at the moment). Hayden won a lot of acclaim for that movie. Personally, it is my favorite movie of all time. Another movie of his that I really like is Awake. Damn good movie.
So before you go on and diss GL's choice for Anakin, watch the movies. He really is a talented actor (again I am biased).

So now onto the next topic. That cheesy love story.

Admittedly, I agree the the vast population. That love story was cheesy. GL needed someone like Danielle Steel or Nicholas Sparks to come in and write that story. That's about all I can say about that.

Hope you enjoyed, and maybe agreed with some of the topics.

Episode III to come next week.

Aye, in Episode V George brought in Irvin Kersher to help develope the storyline, especially the Han and Leia love story and it turned out marvelously.

As for HC, I saw nothing that he really did wrong. I think that he was at his best in Episode III, not Episode II.

Hayden was great! He was exactly what the character required - a supertalented kid with more talent than brains - confused, hormonal, egotistical, the Jim Morrison of the SW galaxy. People wanted Vader to be some cool guy, because they'd loved the villain for so many years. Vader wasn't cool, he was a flawed human being like the rest of us.
With the exception of that weird 'Sound Of Music' moment in the countryside I dug the love story. It made perfect sense that being in love would be the thing that brought Anakin down, and it added so much depth to a villain I'd been so curious about for 30 years.

cont'd AOTC begins to bridge the gap between the OT and the wildly different TPM. I loved seeing the Stardestroyer-like ships and the Stormtrooperesque clones, not to mention Owen and Beru on the moisture farm. You can really feel the saga building up to the conclusion you know is coming. And Obi-Wan's scene with Dex is one of my favourites in the entire saga!
I love this film! Great blog!

I'm actually okay with the cheesiness, because the story and acting is appropriate for young love. Thinking back on my early romances, Ani and Padme's relationship is equally awkward and uncomfortable. The most important thing to me is that their love is portrayed honestly, and I believe it is. I absolutely agree with you about Hayden, by the way. I like him best in AOTC. He did such a great job playing all the aspects of Anakin Skywalker in that movie.

The love story is a bit cheesy and awkward, but I've got to say that it's grown on me. And I think a lot of the criticism of Hayden Christensen dissipated with the release of Revenge of the Sith, when everyone got to see the culmination of his character. Certainly not all of the criticism disappeared, but I think that film went a long way towards justifying Mr. Lucas' casting choice.

That cheesy love story.

It's not the love story that cheesy, it's the dialogue. It needed more romance but there was no time for it. I think HC and NP did the best they could considering the words that had to come out of their mouths.

I was watching a comic (patton oswald) talk about the pre-quels on tv not too long ago. His decree regarding Anakin in the pre-quels was "I do not care why I like the things I like, just that I like them." I think thats my problem with Anakin - I want his past portrayed with the same awe inspiring, over top awesomeness, as Darth Vader. That is the problem I have - I just do not identify with Anakin.

HC wasn't that good an actor in episode 2, but you could see that he had developed a lot in episode 3, especially the emotional scenes! i loved him in episode 3, plus in episode 2 he was so skinny...he got bigger for episode 3

I agree with you about HC in the role of Anakin. The character needs a certain adolescent moodiness and I thought he protayed that aspect well.

In some of the interviews with HC that I have read he stated that he wanted to play the character a bit darker but he was told to save that for eposode III. Perhaps that is why he seems to improve in the last movie and seem more like a character that can become Vader.

I am interestd to hear your thoguhts on EIII.
