LUKE: No, my father didn't fight in the wars. He was a navigator on a
spice freighter.
BEN: That's what your uncle told you. He didn't hold with your
father's ideals. Thought he should have stayed here and not gotten
involved.
LUKE: You fought in the Clone Wars?
BEN: Yes, I was once a Jedi Knight the same as your father.
LATER...
BEN: I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have
this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it. He
feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damned-fool idealistic
crusade like your father did.
After hearing this conversation, for the longest time I have been wondering whether Obi-Wan is lying about the relationship Owen had with Anakin or whether it was a continuity error that Lucas decided to ignore. My reasoning for this blog, for one, begins when Obi-Wan stated that Owen did not follow in Anikin's "ideals" and believed that he should have "
stayed here". For me, this suggests that the two had a deep personal relationship together. It feels as if Owen and Anakin had known each other rather than their brief time together as depicted in Episode II. This also suggests that he had known Anakin when he was living on Tattoine. This cannot be so as well because they both did not meet until they were much older and Anakin had not been on Tattoine for 9 years (and even that visit was brief).
Furthermore, Obi-Wan said that Anakin followed him on a "crusade." This does not depict the padawan relationship that they had been shown in the prequels. According to this line, it appears that Obi-Wan is suggesting that Anakin followed him off Tattoine to fight in the Clone Wars rather than being found there by Qui-Gon years before the war began.
Anyway, any comments on this matter would help. I am not saying that any of what I have written about is the honest truth, just wondering what you all think so I can make up my own mind.
Have a good one all.
