Star Wars and MySpace
Who SAYS Star Wars fans aren't hip? The hottest social networking site out there, the famous (and sometimes infamous) MySpace is filled to the brim with Star Wars fans and thier trappings. Big time organizations like TheForce.Net and Master Replicas have MySpace pages. A search for "StarWars" in the video section gets you over a thousand hits, far more than any other search I've tried.

If someone has a Master Replicas FX lighsaber, its a forgone conclusion that they've got a short video of them swinging it around on MySpace. In Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy's riff of Episode I, when Obi-Wan loses his saber, Kevin says "Aww, man! I was going to make a sweet video of me using that and post it on MySpace!"

So, is this a good thing? Obviously, its another awesome way for the Star Wars community to get together without actually getting together, but MySpace draws heavy fire a lot for being a popular internet social site. Is it really a good idea to get caught in all that? Or will the privacy and child molester nuts not worry too much about a bunch of Star Wars nuts populating the site they so disdain?

Now before you all smash me down for being anti-MySpace, you should know I personally love it, have a page, and nine of those thousands of "StarWars" videos are mine. I just got to thinking about this after reading yet another article about how dangerous MySpace is to kids today.

What are your thoughts?

I, too, have a myspace. I did mostly because of my Star Wars friends...And I went kicking and screaming while doing it. I'm finally getting the hang of it and love spamming everybody with comments, plus sending messages. But, like anything else, it can be abused and over used.

The down side to myspace? The site is always down or maintenance. How does one go about using it when the site is always down? Other than that, a whole lot of fun!! :D

I'm going to go there and ask for you to add me as a friend now...;)

I too have a page on myspace. My daughter started me on it. My space setting is for friends only and I don't approve just anyone. Most of my friends are my SW fan friends, nieces, my daughters and some other very close friends. I have fun.

Having your setting on friends only is one way to avoid "crazies & creeps" getting on your page. I'll send you a friend request if you like.

I do not have a myspace, actually. My friends always tell me I should have a myspace. When I do(or ever), I'm gonna communicate with a great many friends.(My HS friends)

My star wars fan site http://www.fandomcomics.com where we do fan fic, fan comics, and fan D20 material, uses MySpace to promote the site to great effect! Of course all you commentors in this blog are welcome to join! http://www.myspace.com/fandomcomics

I think MySpace is definately rife with internet predators just as people fear, but it is good to promote a website on. Mostly because you are able to send bulletins to all your friends, which means it is easy for people to know when you update or when you have an event going on. We are relatively new to MySpace at Fandom Comics, but have already gotten a pretty big reaction in a very short period of time!
