So, poking around the site here, I noticed that the just uploaded poll of the week is...
Do you have strong feelings about the movie Annie Hall?
*Yeah, it's a great movie.
* No. Should I have?
* I will never forgive it for what it did to Star Wars.
Which is a pretty obscure question, and I'm expecting a lot of "No. Should I have?"s on this one. Most people who were born after or around the time of the original release of
Star Wars will have no idea what this is referring to. However, as a total movie nut in general, and an avid follower of the Oscars specifically, I can shed a little light on this.
Annie Hall is considered one of Woody Allen's best comedies, and rightfully so, it's a pretty good movie. Now,
Annie Hall came out in 1977. See where I'm going yet?
When Oscar season rolled around, a certain space epic you may be aquainted with was up for a LOT of nominations:
* Best Art Direction
* Best Costume Design
* Best Visual Effects
* Best Editing
* Best Original Score
* Best Sound
* Best Supporting Actor (Alec Guinness)
* Best Director
* Best Picture
* Best Screenplay
That's a pretty impressive list of nominations, almost on a
Lord of the Rings level of domination. And
Star Wars won most of them... EXCEPT:
* Best Supporting Actor
* Best Director
* Best Picture
* Best Screenplay
Best Supporting Actor went to Jason Robards for
Julia, but the top three awards went to, guess what,
Annie Hall. So, some of us are kinda bitter about it. Even the American Film Institute, when compiling their list of the 100 Greatest American Movies put
Annie Hall at #31 and
Star Wars at a very impressive #15.
So there you go. Does it tick you off that Woody Allen stole Uncle George's three biggest awards right out from under him?
