The Annie Hall question...
So, poking around the site here, I noticed that the just uploaded poll of the week is...

Do you have strong feelings about the movie Annie Hall?

*Yeah, it's a great movie.

* No. Should I have?

* I will never forgive it for what it did to Star Wars.

Which is a pretty obscure question, and I'm expecting a lot of "No. Should I have?"s on this one. Most people who were born after or around the time of the original release of Star Wars will have no idea what this is referring to. However, as a total movie nut in general, and an avid follower of the Oscars specifically, I can shed a little light on this.

Annie Hall is considered one of Woody Allen's best comedies, and rightfully so, it's a pretty good movie. Now, Annie Hall came out in 1977. See where I'm going yet?

When Oscar season rolled around, a certain space epic you may be aquainted with was up for a LOT of nominations:

* Best Art Direction
* Best Costume Design
* Best Visual Effects
* Best Editing
* Best Original Score
* Best Sound
* Best Supporting Actor (Alec Guinness)
* Best Director
* Best Picture
* Best Screenplay

That's a pretty impressive list of nominations, almost on a Lord of the Rings level of domination. And Star Wars won most of them... EXCEPT:

* Best Supporting Actor
* Best Director
* Best Picture
* Best Screenplay

Best Supporting Actor went to Jason Robards for Julia, but the top three awards went to, guess what, Annie Hall. So, some of us are kinda bitter about it. Even the American Film Institute, when compiling their list of the 100 Greatest American Movies put Annie Hall at #31 and Star Wars at a very impressive #15.

So there you go. Does it tick you off that Woody Allen stole Uncle George's three biggest awards right out from under him?

Well I'll look at it this way. You don't see a 30 year Anniversary Celebration for Annie Hall. You don't see older and younger fans like us on a Annie Hall site, etc. Heck some of the young fans here don't even know the movie Annie Hall as you mention.

So who really won in the long run!! GL must be proud!!!

Although I am acquainted with the movie Annie Hall I didn't know about all of the Oscar hoopla surrounding it and Star Wars. Jedi Lily does make an excellent point--I totally agree with her, although I have to say that I am quite surprised that Star Wars won any Oscars, not because it didn't deserve any (it deserved them ALL) but because it didn't conform to the 'Hollywood' ideal. So, WooHoo! for the ones it did manage to earn!
Oh yeah, and that movie, Annie Who? What was the name of that show?;)

If it makes ya feel better, remember that the Academy almost NEVER picks the best picture of the year as its Best Picture.

Then again, Annie Hall is a terrific movie... :p

Never seen Annie Hall. I'd say Star Wars won the war, so to speak, in this one. Unless someone can point me to the Annie Hall blogs. ;)

Ah yes, the film that made me hate Woody Allen for the next several years. Then the Soon Yi thing happened and that's the reason I dislike him today ;). I saw "Annie Hall" in 1986 on VHS (it wasn't my idea) and while it's arguably Allen's best film made during his prime, what ANH came to mean to movies and to the culture as whole far eclipses it. Which why I still think it's a mistake ANH didn't win; it grates even more when you see Best Picture statuettes doled out to "Titanic" and "Return of the King." They got their victory lap but not any of the SW films.

Burn, Hollywood, burn!

I am well aware of the whole Annie Hall hoopla among Star Wars fans, but I still voted "No. Should I have?" because it is really quite trivial. They are just movies!

But if you really push me on, I would say "At least Uncle George didn't have a relationship with an underage Asian girl."

I've never seen Annie Hall, but I am quite perturbed that Star Wars was only ranked at #15 for the AFI's list of greatest movies!! I mean come on people! Look what Star Wars did for cinema! Who are the idiots who put together these lists anyway?

Actually, #15 is pretty good. Here are the movies that "beat out" Star Wars for the top spots:

Some Like it Hot (1959)
The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Schindler's List (1993)
On the Waterfront (1954)
The Graduate (1967)
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
Gone with the Wind (1939)
The Godfather (1972)
Casablanca (1942)
and Citizen Kane (1941)

I really don't care. Around February a year ago I think it was, when EpIII didn't win anything, somebody was saying that the biggest compliment a movie can get is not winning an award. I can't say I disagree. (unless we're talking about Lord of the Rings!)

According to the top#14 list above...

The 14 greatest movies of all time were all made before 1972.
Boy, movie makers in these last 35 years just suck compared to the guys from the 40s and 50s i guess.

But, the 40s and 50s is when most of the "people in charge" were kids so thats thier frame of refrence for voting.

Ask the same people to name the best songs of all time and your gonna get mostly songs from the 50s and 60s as well.

conduct a poll from people all under age 40, and the list will be drasticly different.

The only ones from that list I could fairly see in contention with star wars is:

Wizard of Oz,
Gone With the Wind,
Godfather,
Casablanca,
and Citizen Kane

Of course my top 15 would also include:

Godfather 2,
Jaws,
Rocky,
Aliens,
Raiders of the lost ark,
Empire strikes back,
Terminator,
Amadeus,
and maybe Poltergiest
oh.... and of course Star wars :)

Well, while they are not in the top 15, several of your choices DO make the top 100 list:

The Godfather 2 is #32
Jaws is #48
Rocky is #78
Raiders of the Lost Ark is #60
Amadeus is #53

And, yes, the age of the movers and shakers in Hollywood would be a major factor in the choices here.

Oh, and Schindler's List is from 1993, somewhat after 1972. :)

Yea man, in my opinion, 90% of the top 100 movies were all made between '72 and '87

compare 70s+ movies against all the old stuff pre-70.

The great actors from the 30s, 40s, 50s... their acting couldnt get much more wooden... theres a few exceptions but for the most part the acting always looked like it belongs on the stage, not on the screen (where theyre supposed to be convincing you they are real people ya know?)

... To make that point i always like to refer to the greatest theory in acting ever spoken...

Very early in his career, Harison Ford had a bit part as a bell boy with 1 line.
"Excuse me Sir, you have a call at the front desk.".
He delivered the line to some famous movie start (i forget who).

Afterwards the dircetor shows another star doing Fords bellboy role and says...
"See Harry, this guy does your role and you can just tell hes a movie star. You dont have that ability."

To which Ford replies, "I thought he was supposed to be playing a convincing bellboy."

hehe

In so many words, Ford slapped the guy in the face, demonstarting that a real good actor should be able to play any part and make it believable.

How great an actor can you be if you cant even convincingly pull off a bellboy with 1 line :)

Harison Ford is awesome :)

Sorry, dont know how i got off on that tangent hehe just happened.

I must say I'm rather mad at Annie Hall. If it had been a better movie than Star Wars, it would have been fine with me. But not giving the Oscars to Star Wars was just meant as a slap in George Lucas' face because he was not conformist enough (i. e. no opening credits which was unheard of).

Can't agree. Just saw Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn acting together today and they have so much chemistry and all. I also love all of the top movies from the AFI list. It's an honor for Star Wars that it's named as #15 because I can see how most of the old folks can't see its greatness. Still, we all know that Star Wars should have been named #1 and Harrison Ford really is the best!

What was the big deal about Annie Hall other than it launched Diane Keaton's career and claim-to-fame as an actress who likes to wear men's clothing? ?:|

Star Wars is and always will be a monumental film--loved by even those who aren't into scifi. It transcends Its genre as well as the era it came from. SW will never be "one of those 70's films" It's so much more than that.

In retrospect I realize that the 70's was an Era that claims Saturday Night Fever, and Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice were "Great films"...
Both of them dated and cliche.

Star Wars has timeless appeal, but films like Annie Hall are only "great" in thier hayday.

Why oh why couldn't I have been there...

"Annie Hall is not the movie you want to vote for"
"Star Wars is a superior Film"
"I think Star Wars should win every thing"
"George Lucas should be President of the United States and the Galactic Empire"

Hmmm, ok, the last one coulda been pushing the old force mind trick a bit? :-P
