 | Lord of the Trilogy |
Last week I was sick. Some stomach bug thing that had me laid up in bed between trips to the loo. It's never any fun, especially when it happens on a weekend - the one time our entire family has a chance to spend a few precious hours together. So instead of doing "family" stuff, Hubby-Wan & Padawan-Wan entertained themselves while I watched t.v. in bed all day.
But on the 2nd day I felt my strength returning so I dragged my weakened body down the stairs to the sofa in the living room. Hubby-Wan poured me a pint of Gatorade, Padawan-Wan brought me his favorite blanket to cuddle up under then declared, "Mom, I think I'm ready to watch Lord of the Rings now."
Whoa! My heart leapt into my throat I was so excited! I've waited 62 months for him to enjoy these stories with me and here was the moment - I wasn't going to let it go past. "Of course!" I found strength enough to open the DVD case & insert disc 1 into the DVD player. Extended Special Edition or nothing for this LOTR junkie.
The movie began & Padawan-Wan was riveted to the screen. Isildur is shot as he tries to swim - this is the moment that sparks the Padawan's verbal diarrhea. Seriously, we watched all 12 hours of this trilogy with a constant stream of questions pouring from his face. Normally I don't mind, ask away young one, but this time it was just too much to take. It was stupid questions like (as Frodo stood beside Gandalf's cart) "When is Frodo going to get in the cart?" and "why is Gandalf wearing a hat?" I don't know, I don't know, I don't know!!
We have read The Hobbit to our son so he recognized Gandalf & Bilbo & even the dwarves when they appeared in Rivendell. But I was amazed at how quickly he picked up on the names of the characters. Of course, the one thing he could NEVER keep straight through the whole trilogy was Sauron and Saruman. Well, I have to admit, the first time I read the trilogy about 10 years ago, I too was a bit confused. Although... an amazing thing happened during disc 6, the padawan said, "Is Sauron going to die now that Frodo melted the ring?" WOW!! It only took 11 hours & 45 minutes for him to figure it out!
In all, he thoroughly enjoyed the films. I thought for sure the Orcs & Uruks would scare him to death but they didn't. How do I know? Because we've gone several days without a nightmare.... We began the trilogy last Saturday and spent the whole week making it through the movies. It's been a fun bonding experience with my son to say the least. I have enjoyed watching him enjoy the films.
We finished the last disc just an hour ago. Now, yes, I admit, I cry at the end of the books so there is no way I can make it through the films w/o shedding a tear. To my amazement, as Frodo said goodbye to the hobbits at the harbor, my son began to cry. He said, "Is Frodo going to die?" Amazing. He kept Sauron & Saruman straight AND understands metaphors? I think I have a genius on my hands.
Watching LOTR has been a nice way to kick off the holiday season. Every year for the last 10 years I read the books starting on January 2nd. This is the first time I've watched the movies before starting my reading marathon.
Happy Holidays everyone!

Ahh the great LOTR trilogy! I hadn't read the books before seeing the first movie and completely got confused with some of the names and characters. I thought Sauron was one of the Nazgul when he wasn't that big eye thing. And at the end of the first one when Sam says, "Strider will look after them" I thought who the heck is Strider? I eventually read the books, though, and saw all of the movies.
Have a safe and happy Las Vegas Christmas!
And if you haven't yet, check out the Bellagio, they usually have an outstanding Christmas display.

Too bad Orcrist got buried in lonely mountain
Gandy dual wielding Orc and Glam! that would be beastly.

I kno I kno Eomer was mustering the Rohirrim, actually it was Erkenbrand, Yes another guy. thank you for letting me rant.
I love LotR, as shown by my screen name Kudos for reading the books every year. (i cant manage that, usually im bogged down with school or just too tired)

Please don't smack me, but I could never get into LOTR. But you know what? I'll try again, Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but I will try. What? What do you mean there is no try?
Feel better!

I watched all the movies first then I read The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring and am currently reading The Two Towers, some of the description parts get a little long for me but I think I am slowly becoming a LOTR addict.

I've done that marathon a couple of times. The big theater where I live showed the first two extended editions the night before Return of the King was released nationally and I was lucky enough to be able to attend, although I had a crappy seat. It's good to hear that your padawan enjoyed the movies.
Have a happy holiday's!

That was cool, Oboe-wan. We plan a LOTR marathon this weekend. Haven't watched it in a while. Glad your padawan was willing to sit through the films. It's a family-bonding experience when kids and parents (and sometimes even grandparents) can get together and watch something like LOTR or the Star Wars movies. I enjoyed reading your story.

Why does LOTR seem right around the holiday season? I really don't know, but I always get in the mood for them as the weather turns cold.
I'm so glad you and your son enjoyed them! I'm amazed the Orcs didn't scare him, they scared me and I'm a couple decades older at least!

The old trial-and-error approach to parenting, eh?
I know that LOTR doesn't scare jkelly2 because when an orc got shot with arrows and fell to the groudn dead, he said, "Oh, that guy is tired. He needs to go night-night now."

This seems as good a time as any to confess..... I haven't seen LOTR...
{hangs head in shame}
But I'm planning on it... maybe over the holidays.... do I want the regular or extended special edition like Oboe-Wan recommends???
I can't make these kinds of decisions....

Good grief Granny, it was on TV this weekend. Get your old butt in gear, grandma. Geez, does the Queen need to kick you in the hiney?
I, too, read LOTR...and own all the movies. Loved it, loved it. Glad your son loved it too!!

I could go on & on for hours about the movie vs. books when it comes to LOTR. I'll just say that I was pleased w/the movies. There are A LOT of things in the books left out of the movies & quite frankly, if you're not a big fan of the books, you'd never know anything was missing in the movies! Some stuff is too confusing to put on screen & considering how many characters there are in the books, it would be overload for sure.
.....ALWAYS extended special edition!!!
Nitey nite!!!

What a wonderful story!! I unfortunately had to work this past weekend, so I did not get to see any of the movies until Return of the King last night. I do have the DVD's...but not the extended versions I also have the books, but have not read them (still working on some of my SW books )
I'm amazed the Orcs didn't scare him, they scared me and I'm a couple decades older at least!
Oh...they still scare me!! I still have problems watching them too long

Oh boy, I've been planning a marathon with my Uncle Dave who is a fantasy fanatic ( we did Dark Crystal and Krull together - happy days) - unfortunately, he's a postie, and he's perma-tired at the moment - I'll let you know if I manage to get it together!
Great story O-B, and glad you are feeling better!

Isn't it grand to be able to share our interests with our padawans? (I wish I had something clever to say, but I'm operating on 4 hours of sleep and the caffeine hasn't yet kicked in.)

That's why I plan to have my own library of favorite books! That way I can read the SW novels, LOTR novels, or anything else I want without having to borrow from the library all the time. (Don't get me wrong. I love going to the library. There are just certain books I would like to have ALL THE TIME.) Hope you are feeling better!

It must be that time of the year: I started the movies yesterday (the extended editions) - watching them on the train to/from work - and plan on being done with them by Friday.
I love the books and the movies...absolutely incredible. I could write about them with no less vigor than I do Star Wars. Wonderful stuff!!!

Yes, feeling much better. It was almost 10 days ago now that I was sick (some 24 hour bug) so I really only watched disc 1 of FOTR while sick. The rest I could enjoy fully! I did discover this weekend that ROTK was on TNT, but wasn't feeling much in the mood to watch it w/commercials. I'm a snob, I know....

Glad you're feeling better. I had the same thing a week ago. NOT FUN.
I found strength enough to open the DVD case & insert disc 1
It's amazing how humans find strength in extreme circumstances.
stupid questions like (as Frodo stood beside Gandalf's cart) "When is Frodo going to get in the cart?" and "why is Gandalf wearing a hat?" I don't know, I don't know, I don't know!!
I can sympathize with that!
I've never seen LOTR, but it's great when you can find a movie that you and the kid(s) can can bond over.

I'm pretty impressed with your son! I mean, going through that movie a year ago was quite something for me! Although, I'm curious if you gave him warnings about who's dieing and all that. I also saw the extended, over multiple days though.
I thought for sure the Orcs & Uruks would scare him to death but they didn't. How do I know? Because we've gone several days without a nightmare....
That's quite surprising, though I didn't have any nightmares, I had trouble sleeping due to a certain's Dwarf's comments about the witch/elf. Arg! I have trouble remembering the names when i want to. Although I've only watched it once, and never read it.
