"I thought they smelled bad on the outside!"
Early yesterday morning, Padawan-Wan stumbled into my bedroom. I was still half asleep, but his face was right up to mine. "Mom?" he repeated until I actually opened my eyes.
"Yes honey?" I asked, trying very hard not to freak out.
"Did the boga really die?" He looked so sad. He must have been fretting about this all night.
"I don't know honey, go back to sleep." So, he crawls into bed with me & goes back to sleep. Of course now I'm wide awake, how do I explain the death of one of his favorite SW creatures without upsetting him? That was a pretty far fall to the bottom of the sinkhole, but Obi-Wan survived, so why wouldn't Boga? I tried to come up with all sorts of scenarios to comfort my little guy, so concerned about fictional beasts in a sci-fi film that he can't sleep.
In the morning, the discussion continues. And this time, Padawan-Wan has come up with his own solution to this problem. "Maybe the boga can swim & just like Obi-Wan she swam away. Or maybe someone found her & made her better. Do you think she was shot by Commander Cody?" Hmm.... "No," I tell him. "He hit the rocks right by her & knocked her off." That seemed good enough for him. Boga is somewhere alive & well, living out the rest of her days in green Veractyl pastures.
"Your powers are weak, old man."
Tonight we watched ANH for the first time in what seems like ages. It was fun - felt fresh, shiny & squishy. I was certainly enjoying the movie with renewed interest and it seemed Padawan-Wan was too. After playing millions of hours of Lego SW 2, he speaks of scenes in the movie like
he were there actually influencing the action!
I made a comment about how lame the duel between Obi-Wan & Darth Vader seems & Hubby-Wan had a wonderful explanation for this. His thought was the "style" of sword play in the OT was of the "swashbuckling" genre. And this was all well and good (see duel between Black Pirate Roberts & Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride) for films in the 80's. But then this little film called
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon appeared and changed the face of movie combat. I'm not sure how CT,HD (2000) would have affected TPM (1999), but perhaps there are subtle differences in the fighting style between TPM & AOTC that I'm just not aware of. Otherwise, Hubby-Wan's theory holds a little bit of water, in my humble opinion.
"Anakin Skywalker meet Obi-Wan Kenobi."
Another theme that seems to bother Padawan-Wan is the fact that Obi-Wan & Anakin have this fight at the end of ROTS. "How can friends fight lightsabers like that?" he asked me after watching ROTS for the 10th time this week. True, how do you explain a "real" falling out to a 5-year-old. Someone who to this point hasn't had a "real" friend. Playdates, sure, but someone who cares so deeply for you that when you end the friendship the whole galaxy collapses? It's hard to say, but Padawan-Wan has his own thoughts on this one.
It all begins with Anakin killing the younglings. Padawan-Wan didn't seem so bothered by this idea, but he did project what I'm assuming are his own feelings on the matter on to Obi-Wan instead. He claims that Obi-Wan was so upset that Anakin killed the younglings that he couldn't be friends with him anymore. Wow. Yeah, agreed: killing kids would be a great reason to end a friendship. It would be silly for me not to add this one fine point... ever since watching ROTS Padawan-Wan does not role play as Anakin anymore. In many of his adventures these days he pretends to be Obi-Wan. Interesting....
"What happened to Shaak Ti?"
Obviously, this isn't a quote from the movie, but a quote from the Padawan. He
loooooves Shaak Ti in the Clone Wars series. He has told me many times how brave she is & that I should "be her" [as my avatar] instead of Aayla because Shaak Ti fights General Grevious & almost wins. Shaak Ti does rock. And she has those cool striped lekku. But still. Padawan-Wan wants to know how Shaak Ti dies.
How does one explain the editing floor to a child who thinks movies are things that have actually happened? I've told him there are several scenarios floating around out there as to how she dies. Personally, I love the idea of General Grevious killing her on the Invisible Hand though the metaphor of Anakin killing her tugs at my heart. Padawan-Wan has thoroughly shot down the idea of GG killing her - he says "He likes her too much to kill her." Hmm.. interesting take on the Clone Wars series.
"I'm not gonna eat those Wookiee Cookies!"
Of course I have to end this entry with a "scarred for life" food story concerning the padawan. My mother makes really yummy fried zucchini. Not that greasy deep fried bread crumb crusted stuff you get at the Olive Garden or Chili's: her stuff is coated in this yummy bread batter that just hits you in that "junk food with a vegetable inside" spot. These pan fried treats look a little bit like cookies when they're all done. I was hoping today when I warmed a few up with my lunch that I could trick the padawan into eating one by telling him they were "Wookiee Cookies" but he didn't fall into that trap. Though I'm hoping he didn't misinterpret "Wookiee Cookies" to mean something completely different...
"And now for something completely different..."
Yes, sadly, this weird blog entry is over. Time for me to crawl back under my uninspired rock hideout.
