11:52pm

Oboe-Wan lies awake, the excitement of the day still playing in her head. "Why don't you get dressed & go buy it?" Hubby-Wan grumbles, tired of listening to her flick through channels on the t.v. while he's trying to sleep.

"I don't know..." she whines, flicking quickly away from Discovery Health Channel showing some disgusting surgical procedure up close & personal.

"I know why you're not going right now: because you don't have a Hermione costume to dress up in!" He starts laughing & rolls over, promptly falling asleep.

He's right, she thinks to herself. If I'm going to be at Barnes & Noble at midnight I need to be costumed. But Padawan-Wan's Harry Potter glasses don't fit my fat head... She shuts off the t.v., images of happy readers snatching up their new copies of the book dancing in her head.

6:45am

Oboe-Wan bounces out of bed, grabs whatever clothes are closest to her, throws play clothes on Padawan-Wan & dashes out the door. The grocery store down the street should have copies of the book, and one of them surely has her name on it! At 7:15am, a brand new crisp copy of "Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows" is in her grubby paws. She drives Padawan-Wan to the park to spend an hour or two playing, while she pulls up a camp chair under a shady tree and begins reading...

I decided I would have to embark on a speed-reading marathon this weekend just so I could finish the book before spoilers began popping up on the internet and before any of my middle school students broke the ending to me. My mantra became "I must finish before Monday, I must finish before Monday."

I managed to read 350 pages by 5pm on Saturday (with an almost-6-year-old running around the house, this is no small feat!), but stowed the book in my instrument bag to bring along with me to "Phantom of the Opera." I would have plenty of time during breaks in the music to read bits & pieces of the book. And sure enough, I managed to read an extra 75 pages during & between the shows. Of course, answering (or not answering) questions from the other musicians curious as to what was going on in the book.

Here in Vegas, the temperatures soar in the summer, so my "winter reading list" is now my "summer reading list"! This being my 2nd summer here, I knew what to expect - being stuck indoors out of the heat & sun. Miraculously exhibiting some skill for planning ahead, I'd already spent the last month reading Harry Potter books 1-6 to be ready for the new movie & the new book. And man was I ever ready!!! I was able to easily finish the book in 2 days - closing it last night around 11:35pm, promptly hopping on the computer to email the one person on the planet I knew who would be finished with the book before me: Mirax7. In her secret prison, she finished the book even quicker than I did!!

I'm trying very hard to not give away anything here! I'll just say my theories on Professor Snape turned out to be true - much to my pleasure. I think it's important for me to tell you he is one of my favorite characters. Yes, I love the over-the-top portrayal of Snape by Alan Rickman. Next in line as a favorite character is Professor Lupin - I loved him the moment he stepped on to the pages of Prisoner of Azkaban & have adored him since. Of course, these are both adults. I don't believe any girl can say she doesn't love Hermione or Ginny or Luna or any number of other girls at Hogwarts!! We certainly have our pick of role models for our kids, don't we?

There were several deaths of characters with recognizable names - some of which elicited an "oh no!" from me, but one in particular brought tears to my eyes. The action saw very little interruption - there were times when Harry, Hermione & Ron did a lot of conversing or just "sitting around" waiting for the next adventure to come their way and I did wish more was going on or that the lulls were skipped. But, nothing like the stops in action that book 6 suffered from.

Mysteries were solved, questions were answered, the action was intense, relationships strengthened, rediscovered or mended and the ending was....

Well, I'll let you read it & decide for yourself. But speaking for myself, I am satisfied with the ending. I have been a Harry Potter fan right from the beginning - in fact, I worked at a Borders Books & Music the year HP1 hit it big. I know these books are aimed toward middle school aged kids, but they have really awakened my imagination. The first 2 books seemed written with that demographic in mind, but as the books progressed so did her writing style. Unfortunately, that also means that the last 5 books are each 600 pages longer than the first 2!

An interesting revelation, something I knew to be true on some level, but not entirely sure, is that this series takes place from 1991-1997. Harry was born in 1980. Can you believe it? It's weird to think that I am just a few years older than him - I mean, I *know* he's not real, none of this is real - but it's cool to know this all takes place during my young adult years, just like Harry.

It saddens me that the series is over. It's been an awesome ride & read. The Epilogue gives us a small glimpse into the lives of the characters after the story ends. But it's not quite enough. I have so many questions & I'm sure that JK Rowling won't be coming to my house any time soon to answer all my questions. The biggest one is: "Will there be a prequel series featuring the adventures of Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot & Prongs?"

Is it all really over? We still have 2 more movies to go.... I guess I'll just have to reread the entire series.

FRODO LIVES!!

oh, wait... wrong books....

POTTER STINKS!!!

WEASLEY IS OUR KING!!!!

LONG LIVE HARRY POTTER!!!!

HP VII was definitely the best one yet!! My friend and went at midnight to buy it, and it was an absolute riot!! I finished it very early this morning, and I have to say I was incredibly pleased with the boy wizard's sendoff. And I knew some people were supposed to die, but there were so many! One person died, and then another, then another, then another... it was almost hard to read on (but of course I did....)

SPOILERS BELOW

And I've thought for a long while that Harry was a Horcrux. That was an excellent way to end it, with Voldie kind of killing himself!

END SPOILERS

I have way too much to say... I'll have to write my own blog on this subject! Great blog, and MTFBWY!

Was it **SPOILER**

Remus Lupin? Fred? Dobby? (I cried for him)

**END SPOILER**

I loved Deathly Hallows, though I thought that some of the deaths were unnecessary. And my theory about a Horcrux being in a certain underground location was right!

I'm a big fan of Harry Potter myself. Have all the movies that have come out on DVD so far. Will get a copy of the newest one when it comes out. I have to go back and re-read again so I can get up to speed for Deathly Hallows. Currently reading EU books. My oldest son is out of the Harry Potter thing, but not his brother or me and my hubby.

Just finished it! I would have been done sooner, but I had to share it with two brothers......

As far as the book itself, I absolutely loved it, and seeing all the theories and guesses turning out to be correct was great....as was seeing a many more theories being proved wrong.

SPOILER WARNING
And, yeah, I absolutely loved being right about Snape....I've been saying he was good ever since the end of Half-Blood Prince, and seeing my insticts vindicated was great. Oh, and I loved the R.A.B.-Kreacher plotline....I really started to feel for the little guy...
SPOILER ENDS

I've got a lot more I'd like to say, but this comment is long enough as it is....B-)

I'm looking forward to both - the movie and your blog!!! :D

And I've thought for a long while that Harry was a Horcrux.
You know, I was a bit slow on the uptake w/that one! I didn't really figure that out until I was well into the 7th book - seems like I/we *should* have figured that out at some point in the 6th book, obviously this was why Dumbledore was teaching Harry about the Horcruxes. Sure, Dumbledore could have easily tracked down & destroyed them all w/o Harry, but could he have killed Harry to destroy that Horcrux within him? I don't think so.

Remus Lupin? Fred? Dobby?
First, I had a tear for Hedwig - she didn't deserve to die like that trapped in her cage.
But then it was Fred that shocked me to pieces. And just when I'd thought I could move on, there goes Lupin & Tonks. Ugh... the tears over those 3 people... After reading "The Prince's Tale" I went back & read the final moments of Snape's life and that too brought a little lump to my throat knowing he wanted to look in Harry's eyes becuase they were so much like Lily's...

My oldest son is out of the Harry Potter thing, but not his brother or me and my hubby.
I find it fascinating how many adults unabashedly LOVE Harry Potter!! I was thinking how "weird" it is that I am obsessed w/these books - I'm not a kid! I'm *cough*29*cough* years old!

Oh, and I loved the R.A.B.-Kreacher plotline....I really started to feel for the little guy...
Actually, I was glad he turned up in the end - I was worried that he was tortured to death. He was a weird one, though, wasn't he? Kinda creepy in the 5th movie!!

you're in luck! This about book #7 and not the movie. I decided not to blog about the movie actually. But I'll say I loved HP5 the movie! If I had to rank the movies, I'd say:
3
5
4
1
2
(I think... the bottom of that list was hard...)

and for me books rank:
3
7
1
2
4
5
6
or something.... that was a HARD list to make!!!

I loved the book but after I was finished I didn't quite know what to make of it. I still don't, it was great but it was so tragic that at some parts I didn't want to keep reading it. My mom swears that she has never heard me yell during a book like I was during this one. All the twists and deaths. I kinda feel like the epilogue was only put in there so that if she wanted to she could continue with a story. ( I hope I didn't reveal too much in there.) However I would love to see a series though of the Maurders' time at Hogwarts. Hmm thats all I have to say right now.

The book was awesome!!!!! The ending was pitch perfect... sealing JK Rowling's reputation as a great writer. I was completely wrong on who I thought would die... well, except for one character, but I'll bet we all got that one right .... ;)

Book 3 is my favorite, too, BTW. So is movie #3... although I have yet to see #5. Free pass holders have to wait two weeks, so I'm due to go any day now.

LONG LIVE HARRY!!!!!!

I suspected that Snape was a good guy after book 4. I'm glad I was right.
I finished the book last night. All the death's were sad:_|
I did like the epilogue. I kind of thaught she would end it with those four living very happly!!

I was at the book store at midnight for Order of the Phoenix. It was fun watching

I kinda feel like the epilogue was only put in there so that if she wanted to she could continue with a story.
i thought it was interesting that she chose to make the epilogue 19 years later... there's a big gap between the end of HP7 & that epilogue, BUT the way she had everything turn out (especially Harry's thought about his scar not tingling for all those years) could mean things go 2 ways: 1) that she has sealed the story shut by saying IT'S OVER! or 2) setting up a "return" of you-know-who just as Harry thinks he's safe again. It's probably #1.

Poor Hedwig

1) that she has sealed the story shut by saying IT'S OVER!

I think this is the more likely of the two, too. It was a fitting epilogue, too. She sent Harry out on a good note. :)

Enjoyed your comments Oboe Wan. I too felt vindicated as I knew about Snape from the start. I too loooove Alan Rickman (and Snape). I enjoyed the second half of the book's almost constant peril - especially at the Malfoys - yikes! Btw, my fave minor character is Luna. I love her!!!!!! Would have liked to see more characters updated in the epilogue. Had to finish it fast too for fear of media spoilers - and I can't wait to see JK Rowling's interview on Sunday's Dateline.

I got mid-Saturday, (had to go to a swim meet really early) and had it finished in the early hours of Sunday....I got the fact that Harry was a horcrux a few seconds before I found out, and I thought Snape was pure evil after reading six, but then I read a bunch of fanfic that portrayed him as good, so reading seven I thought he was good too, but it was weird, cuz the way JK wrote him those who thought he was evil could've thought he was evil right up to the end...but I reread it and felt so bad for him the second time around, where he's begging voldy to let him find Harry. I cried for him the second time around. Cont

I cried my eyes out for Dobby, I just couldn't believe he was dead!! The other deaths got me too, specially Remus & Tonks, but Dobby was the worst. And Mad Eye! Isn't it funny how some of us got so attached to Mad-eye (like Harry) and we only saw someone impersonating him!

That book was really deep, liked the symbolism, loved the way she orchestrated Harry walking to his death with his mother at his side, it hearkens back nicley to something Dumbledore says at the end of 3 (which is my second fave book, 7's the best now!). I'm re-reading the series now, so I can see all the links between all seven. I love the pairings, I love that Harry never uses the Killing Curse, that Voldemort, so afraid of death kills himself!

It was so perfect! And I love Harry's children's names, specially Albus Severus! Personally, I'd love to read about their adventures at Hogwarts, even if nothing exciting happens, I just love Harry's world.

JK said the epilogue was originally much longer, but she thought it was a bit much, I wouldn't have! But she might write an encyclopedia, that would be so cool!

That would be awesome if JK wrote an encyclopedia, or something. There are a lot of people who complain that LOTR drags on for too long after the "main adventure" ends. We follow our 4 hobbits along their journey home (the weddings, the coronations, the goodbyes) then see them save the Shire from Saruman. We know what happens to the 4 hobbits through the next few years, their positions in the town, their families, Frodo's coming to terms with his adventure. But me? I love that we know every little detail right up until the bitter end. I really want that with the Harry Potter books.

Actually, I'm very interested to know how George Weasley dealt with the death of his twin. And what happened to the rest of the Weasley family. I cried for Fred my 1st reading & my 2nd. I cried for Snape, Dobby, Hedwig, Lupin, Tonks... I love Mad-Eye but his death seemed imminent for a long time "Constant Vigilance"!!!

I loved knowing that Ron & Hermione ended up together, Harry & Ginny... the names of all the kids! Though.... I'm not sure where Rose & Hugo come from? I think I missed something. James, Lily & Albus Severus! I hope Ginny had a bit to say in the naming of the kids!! :^O I hope it's James Frederick :)

Bilmey how did I miss this entry?

I just wanted to echo your dream for a Harry potter EU. While I think Joanne Rowling has earned a break, there's no reason why the franchise could take off with other creators. Maybe it'll happen several years down the line.

The book was great, my favourite was Order of the Phoenix though. I said since day one of Philosopher's Stone that Snape was good, although I started to doubt myself at the end of Half Blood Prince.

You would have missed a brilliant interview back in the UK on the eve of the book release (or thereabouts). The chatshow host (Jonathon Ross) interviewed JK Rowling - and it is difficult to get her on a chat show. It was clear that Rossy didn't know much about the Potter world, other than the movies, but it was an interesting interview all the same.

Another guest on the show was Bob Hoskins. Ross asked him why he had never been approached for a role in any of the films and he said he didn't know, but would love the opportunity.

Rowling then announced on the spot that she'd love him to appear in the next film(s). My guess is that he'll be Slughorn.

I'm not sure where Rose & Hugo come from?

I loved Entertainment Weekly's suggestion

"Maybe Rowling is a fan of LOST?"

I am a big fan of Potter, I was him on halloween once during the early years of Pottermania. Its kind of sad but I knew that Hallows would be good when Hedwig died, because that was the moment where I realised that J.K was not pulling any punches and the beloved but expendable people were at real risk.

Where did Rose and Hugo come from, exactly? Not that it really matters, I mean, people are allowed to name their children things because they just happen to like the name. But still, some backstory would be fun.

This book was one of the best in the series. Though I loved 4, and 6 was pretty good apart from the fact that half of it is Harry practically stalking Malfoy. That was kind of annoying.
