 | The Good, The Bad, and The Not Necessarily Good or Bad |
Glad to be out of the carbonite & rubbing the hibernation goo from my eyes.
In a surprise move last weekend, Padawan-Wan decided he wanted to watch the entire Star Wars Saga from beginning to end. Hubby-Wan & I were stunned: Spider-Man has ruled the roost for the last 2 months. What is this Star Wars you speak of?
We began, of course, with Phantom Menace. And with it began the constant onslaught of questions. The biggest question of the night was, "Is he a good guy or a bad guy?"
Unlike the OT which has clear cut "good" or "bad" characters, the PT is peppered with "grey" characters who challenge our ideas of good vs. evil. Like Palpatine! When he's "Senator" Palpatine he appears to be good, when he's Darth Sidious, he's bad. But how to do you explain a dual personality to a kid? Well... you don't. You let the kid logic kick in & you sit back and enjoy the insanity!!
"But if Palpatine is bad and Sidious is bad then how come no one knows he's bad? Maybe because Palpatine does good stuff for people they think he's good but he's really doing bad stuff. And is Assaj Ventress in this movie?"
Attack of the Clones is even harder to rationalize when your concept of good & bad has more to do with the color of people's Jedi robes than with their actions. "But Mom, Anakin isn't a good guy, he's wearing black." And the argument that ensues is epic.
Revenge of the Sith is easier for him to grasp. Anakin's fall to the dark side is a bit abstract for my son right now: the idea of loving someone so much that you would throw your life away is less tangible than say if Anakin has said, "I LOVE YOU!" and thrown himself into a lava floe. That's something the Padawan can sink his teeth into: dying for love rather than dying because of love. Does that even make sense? It would if you were only 6!
The OT used to be so much more enjoyable to watch with the Padawan before we introduced him to the PT. In the OT, Darth Vader = Bad Guy, Luke = Good Guy. Leia = Good, Tarkin = Bad. Black/white. No problemo. But now? It's a nightmare.
"Darth Vader is really good when he's not in his helmet in Empire Strikes Back but when the helmet goes back on then he's bad again, but Luke doesn't know he's his father so he thinks Darth Vader is bad but he doesn't know that Anakin is a good guy so he wants to kill him so that makes Luke a bad guy if he wants to kill but Leia is really good except when she's Boussh because then she's a bounty hunter and bounty hunters are bad just like Boba Fett who was good when he was a kid until Mace killed his dad and then he was bad and Mace shouldn't have killed Jango because that's bad...." and on & on & on & on.....
So enjoy the simplicity of the OT and even the simple goodness of the PT for what it really can be. It's not hard to just sit back & enjoy the movies without over thinking them. I think that's what happened to me: I thought too hard about what I was seeing, got emotionally invested in these characters and forgot how to just enjoy good guys vs. bad guys.

I think I'm dizzy!!!
LOL
What a fun entry! It certainly is different seeing it from a different point of view... (sorry, I had to go there!)
I'm glad you're getting to share the joy with Padawan-Wan, though. Sound like a lot of fun even trying to listen to the logic ensuing!!

It sounds like a nightmare.
I like kids, but I try to avoid epic kid questions. I probably wouldn't have introduced him to the PT until he was thirteen.

Geez, Oboe! No overanalyzing the gray areas in the PT anymore????? What's wrong with a little emotional obsession...huh...Huh...HUH???????? Padme and all that...
Ah. I've got a lil' girl padawan, so all she's really interested in is how cute Anakin is, and that, my dear, is as black and white as it gets!
Now my 17-year-old son who overanalyzes just like I do....totally different story.
Great entry!!

I'm slowly introducing all of this to the older of my two boys. Right now, he doesn't get grey areas either. Everything has a definition, and sometimes its as simple as good and bad.

Great read. I will give this to the PT -- at least they gave Darth Maul some horns. That's usually a sure-fire sign that someone is Evil with a capital E.

I've got a 5 year old Padawan so I can totally relate; I can actually hear the same questions coming from his mouth. We started with the OT then went to TPM. I'm going to skip AOTC, because I can't stand to watch most of it, and head straight for ROTS. Oh, how I miss the simplicity of the OT. It's one of the MANY things that drew me to it in the first place.

Good entry, Oboe. It is interesting trying to 'splain things in the movies to the younger fans ... I think each interprets it in their own way.
But excellent point on the gray area villains (and heroes) in the PT.

........Cont.
I did hear her playing and talking to her dolls or one of her imaginary friends in her room from downstairs the other day, saying she was Princess Leia. She was wearing her Cinderella Halloween costume. It was right after I brought my new Jedi costume home so I think it was a new version of her saying she was Cinderella and I was the Prince/King which she has done a lot lately.

My god I hope that when I introduce my 4 year old cousin to this he doesnt do this.
When my son was 4 he just "enjoyed" Star Wars. Now that he's getting older, his brain is trying to wrap around the more "adult" aspects.
all she's really interested in is how cute Anakin is, and that, my dear, is as black and white as it gets!
OMG, I'm having flashbacks from 3rd grade when I was SOOOO in love with Luke....
(not that that's changed, I just don't walk around w/ "Mrs. Skywalker" written on all my folders these days.)
kids are wonderfull. they have such a unique perspective on everthing
No kidding!!!
I think I've gone cross-eyed.
Here, hold still, I'll whack you on the back of the head.

Fun fun! Hopefully you can tell from my entry that we've enjoyed listening to him explore the grey areas. I probably would have done the same thing had VCR's been around in 1977 so I could watch ANH 300 times a week!!
at least they gave Darth Maul some horns
Yeah, that one was pretty obvious.

I'm going to skip AOTC, because I can't stand to watch most of it
Since my hyperspace is going to run out ....any day now... I'll finally confess my darkest secret: I HATE AOTC!!!! But, my son watches it & like a fungus, it has grown on me. At least now I can make it through a saga-marathon w/o removing myself from the room during it.
I think each interprets it in their own way.
With blog-worthy results!!

My little girl, now 4, is non-stop with them.
Between his howling & your blasting everything in sight, it's a wonder the whole station doesn't know we're here! Oh wait, that's not right. I did find that I learned more about my own interpretation of the films just by exploring my son's questions!
saying she was Princess Leia
Now there's a princess we can all agree on!!!

Or, something close to that.
Exactly!
Can I come over next movie night?
But of course!! Pajama party!!
I probably wouldn't have introduced him to the PT until he was thirteen.
Aw, and miss all the excitement?

Awesome entry, oboe-wan!
Truly remarkable the mind of a youngling is.
As my padawans have grown up, I've truly enjoyed every stage. I must admit the one facet of their younger years I miss the most is their innocence and the simplicity with which they viewed the world around them. Hmmm.
Oh won't you stayayayay just a little bit longer??? (at least you didn't have to hear me sing! )

It runs out on Nov. 22. Not that I want to air our financial woes, but even $14 to renew is a luxury we're a little nervous to afford these days - 'specially w/xmas coming up.... we'll see, though... we'll see....
I get WAY emotionally attached to the characters.
I got so emotionally attached that one of the songs off the new CD was written about Anakin & Padme on Mustafar! I won't say which one, though, I think it's more fun to leave you guessing.

Interesting article. I wonder if I would have found the gray morality of the PT confusing when I was a kid. Even THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK came pretty close to being ambiguous. But as an adult, I must admit that I find the PT's moral complexity a little more enjoyable for me.
