 | I am a cool Jedi - and gosh darn it, people like me. |
I live my life as a good, law abiding person. Following the straight and narrow. The most daring thing I ever did was steal a poster from the bathroom in my dorm freshman year in college, and because I'm such a goody-2-shoes I returned it a few nights later to the same spot. I want so desperately to be a Princess Leia type personality - sassy, quick witted, "charming to the last" - but when it comes down to it, I'm Luke Skywalker. And with good reason...
I do not know a life without Star Wars: my father took me to see Star Wars (back before it was renamed Episode IV: A New Hope) in the theater in May 1977, just days after my 3rd birthday. He loved the movie so much, he then convinced my grandfather & uncle that they should see it as well - all the while these men using me as an excuse to go see this "kids'" movie. In total, I saw Star Wars 6 times in the theater and drive in! What 3 year old can make that claim?
My father created a monster! Consumed by it I am, forever it dominates my destiny. When faced with a decision, I can hear a little voice (it always resembles Alec Guiness) asking me: "what would Luke/Leia do?" Sadly, I usually have an answer - and these answers are always oddly appropriate!
Subsequently, as Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were released in the theaters, my younger brother & I always found ourselves being taken to see them with our very eager parents. With little begging and pleading, they bought us mountains of SW toys. We had ships, action figures, creatures, play sets, and of course the woods out back to reinact every scene from Endor. I remember my brother's loft bed - we would drape a blanket over the side and create the belly of the Millenium Falcon. His closet had shelves big enough to hold a 6 and 3 year old, so we would pretend his closet was the gun turrets. We'd yell, "Great kid! Now don't get cocky!" even though we hardly knew what that meant.
Though we didn't realize it at the time, my brother & I were already consumed with Star Wars. In high school, seems like everyone knew we were into Star Wars. I don't know, maybe my brother's nickname for me: Leia, was a giveaway? We should have known! Every weekend, we would have a Star Wars marathon - watching all 3 movies on Friday night (complete with ice cream sundaes) and AGAIN on Saturday night (those nights were for omelettes & home fries). Yes, you read that right, every weekend we'd watch the OT twice. This went on for 3 years until I graduated and went off to college. Yes, I had friends, thank you very much, but since our strict parents set a 9pm curfew, we had PLENTY of free time to watch these movies!
Something funny happens when you're not paying very close attention to your hobby - it become an obsession because you're too blinded by your enthusiasm to see it! In college, since I did not have a t.v. or VCR in my dorm room, I was Star Wars-less until my weekends or vacations home - when again my brother & I fell comfortably into our old trilogy weekend routines.
Now I had this friend in college who knew I liked Star Wars, so he was looking for an excuse to watch the trilogy and invited me. We not only watched the 3 movies back to back, but soon after became a couple! I don't know that Star Wars was responsible for making us fall in love (though a Terminator marathon probably wouldn't have had the same effect) but it makes for a fun story! My husband is definitely a fan of SW, but not a crazed lunatic such as myself.
As an adult, I know that I am a total geek - the only thing I haven't done yet is dress up like a Jedi! We did have the Imperial March announce us at our wedding, though. I think that counts. No friends will play SW Trivia Pursuit with me (there's a house rule placed only on ME: 3 wedge limit before someone else gets a turn)... No adults want to watch the movies with me (I tend to elaborate wildly when asked even the most simple questions)... It's a sad existence.
We have a child now, he's 4, and a total Star Wars fanatic! He speaks lines along with the movies, acts out scenes with his action figures, knows the names of all the ships. We tried playing Star Wars Trivia Pursuit with him a few weeks ago and he actually got 3 wedges on his own! I'm so proud I could cry...!
No, our child is not named after a Star Wars character. Before the PT came out, we had decided we would name a boy Anakin (these were the days when not everyone knew Anakin Skywalker was Darth Vader's real name unless they had seen the movies more than 3 times). But after PT? Well, it's a little to glaring now to choose a name like that! I do occasionally call him Darth Child when he's acting particularly sithy.
I am a Star Wars fanatic and I am proud of it! I am the idol of my younger cousins who are full of questions and want to start discussions with me on anything Star Wars. My son tells me I look like Princess Leia (yes, the round face and brown eyes are similar!). I'm through fighting the label of "Star Wars Geek" and ready to embrace my destiny.

You know, you bring up an interesting point: our son LOVES the OT but will have very little to do with the PT. There's something about those OT movies that hooks ya!! Thanks for sharing!

sounds like my life. My wife dislikes Star Wars so much she tried to keep me from seeing ROTS in the theatre. Lucky for me my best friend (since I've known since 1st grade) got me out of the house to see it the second night it was out, and my 5 year old daughter loves it too. When I have her on my weekends we have to watch at least one movie ( she is upset that she isn't allowed to see ROTS yet).

She wanted to be Princess Leia for Halloween and I spent hours shopping and finally found the costume on the internet, just in time for her to get sick Halloween morning and miss the fun. When she told us she wanted to be Leia my wife told her "little girls should dress up a princess or ballareina; to which my daughter responded back "Leia is a princess".

darthsharpie - yay for your daughter "Leia is a princess"!!!! I was Princess Leia for Halloween last year.
We won't let our son see ROTS just yet, either. Just a little too intense.

Actually the original movie received the title "Episode IV-A New Hope" in 1980 when it was rereleased in theaters. It is nothing new, it just now says the full title on the DVD box. Even the 1997 SE box only said "Star Wars".

Thanks for that - I knew it didn't get A New Hope title until a rerelease prior to ESB, but wasn't sure.
Yes! We are all dorks, but that's the beauty of it! A safe haven for all of us to revel in the majesty of it all!!!

We have a new enemy, Oboe-Wan. The fandom is strong with her, she could destroy us...
Oboe-Wan brings up some rather interesting points concerning exactly how each of us got hooked. There are too many things about Star Wars to draw someone in, and we were not strong enough to resist it's charm, however we were first exposed. Great entry
Actually, Darthcharlie, I am merely a dork and that has nothing whatsoever to do with my Star Wars obsessions.

Add on top of my SW dorkiness the fact that I am a musician - just a grown up band geek!!

the best thing about having kids this age is you can play with the toys again. My daughter found my original Star Wars toys in the shed and went crazy. She helped me clean them and then we played for hours.
Anyone else tired of eating at Burger King for their kids yet?

I hear ya! My brother & I used my son as the excuse to pull out all our old SW toys this summer. The more "loved" ones which are beyond repair have been permanently passed on to my padawan, but others, like the AT-AT are on loan. It has been so much fun playing with my old stuff again! Though, beware, if you had the yoda hut/swamp: the quicksand turns to goo after 20 years in storage.
I'm vegetarian so it's hard for me to get excited about going to BK - I've been leaving that to my husband to take care of!
btw - does your daughter collect the Galactic Heroes figures? Our son is cRaZy over them!

she's never shown much interest in the Galactic Heroes. Other than my old toys and the BK toys, she's into the movies and video games. She does like the droids and ewok cartoons. I remember having a big stuffed ewok when I was a kid and wish I could find one for her.

Oh and I LOVE the picture choice,
That is one great life story Oboe! I remember playing Star Wars all those years ago too. Watching the OT twice a week, back to back for 3 years?
And I thought I was obsessed LOL!
It's amazing how you and your husband got together. I too thank SW for many, many things and yes, as you know I'm a GEEK too!

You know, at the time watching it that much didn't seem like an obsession so much as just our "weekend ritual" but looking back on it it was so much MORE than an obsession!
Life would not be as it is w/o SW, that's for sure!!
That picture is I think the funniest thing I've ever seen. I have half a mind to use it for every blog.

wow wow wow. You just described my life perfectly. I feel your pain Oboe. Idol of the younger ones, completely misunderstood by the older ones, and without a single person who can stay in a conversation with you for more than a minute without getting lost. I swear we need a Star Wars friend/date finding system. Well may the Force be with you.(notice that they almost never say that in the PT?)

I had a warm smile & great laugh reading this! Like you, I grew up "Star Wars." My kids are now fanatics as well. We have great time sharing the stories together! I
SW Trivial Pursuit-not even aloud in my house!!! No one will play it with me either! Bet my kids could give me a pretty good run for my money...!
Now that I'm "older-and-wiser" I've finally embraced my SW-geekdom! Work attire with a Burger King SW watch-that says it all!
SW is really a wonderful thing to obsess about. It teaches that there are things out there greater than ourselves: duty, honor, family, loyalty, love, & "the force!" Really-is that bad stuff to obsess about? MTFBWY!

Wow...I always win at Trivial Pursuit, and I'll have to use all of these rules at my next party. I'm truly convinced that I could go up against most fans that are twice my age or more and beat them (I'm 14)... well, at least in my little town. Oboe, you're on my roll after this one...welcome to Geekdom.
And the trilogy got me hooked...I HATED TPM before I saw the originals.
