Episode III Meets the Parents
Looking at the upcoming Father's Day promotion, I realize I was a week early in taking my parents to see Revenge of the Sith. But, hey, I was in the neighborhood. Or rather, neighbourhood, since we're talking about Winnipeg here.

My parents don't typically go to first run movie theaters. They saw Episodes I, II and III in the theater at the insistence of their Star Wars-connected son. I don't think they necessarily appreciated all the nuances and intricacies of the prequel plotting, but they were entertained (My mom liked Jar Jar), and as having witnessed my R2-D2-obsessed childhood firsthand, they could appreciate that it meant something to me.

Midi-chlorians and Darth Plagueii may have gone over their heads, but they keyed into the emotions of Episode III, and felt bad for Anakin for making the bad choices that he does. They laughed at Artoo, though Yoda was great, and thought the movie was visually stunning ("How did they make the lava?" my dad asks... well, how much time do ya got, dad?) Oh, and they too loved Boga.

They also got a better idea of what I've been up to for the last three years. They knew about my cameo, since I told them before hand. Even sent them the jpeg of my big walk-on. My mom made sure to tell the theater attendant -- the two people it takes to rip your ticket -- that her son was in the movie before she sat down. Mother's perogative, of course. I pointed out my appearance and they smiled. Supposedly, relatives back in Chile hooted and hollered upon my stroll, but that's just what I heard.

My dad took me to see Star Wars and Empire double-bill, playing at the now-long-dead Metropolitan theater in downtown Winnipeg back in, what, 1981? That was my introduction to the cinematic saga (though I had already been schooled in toys and coloring books at that point). He took me to see Return of the Jedi in 1983, and in 1984, the weeks I spent visiting Chile with them were punctuated by several trips to the movie theater to see El Regresso de Jedi.

So I was happy to complete the saga with them. And to be fair, I think my dad knows a lot more about Star Wars than he lets on. I remember about 15 years ago, he floored me by properly identifying who a little lead miniature of Admiral Ackbar was supposed to be. Granted, he didn't say, "Oh, it's Admiral Ackbar, Mon Calamari commander of Home One." But he said something to the effect of, "Oh, it's the fish guy from Return of the Jedi."

Not a bad recall, based on a tiny unpainted metal figure.

Oh, and for those who may be wondering about the source of my cameo character's name -- Janu Godahli... let's just say it was an early Father's Day present.

Hey the Janu Godahli thing...hehehe
When I first added you to the database I didn't have the character name. A week ago I found it and added it. While I was typing the character name I thought 'Janu, that's like Juan ....spelled back..wards..' ... I felt a little like, "duh, I'm sure everyone knew that before I did."

Nice!

My parents have still not seen it once! (I've seen it four times now.)

The first (non-Disney animated) movie my Dad ever took me to see was Star Wars in 1977. It was the coolest movie-experience of my life. The guy is a huge fan. He had already been to see it with my Mom twice before taking us kids. He he.

They'll get around to seeing ROTS: They just like to let the crouds die down I guess. (Don't ask!)

Were you ever a member of RASSM? circa 97-99?

Just wondering....

I posted a few rants about online fandom when I was just a civilian back then. I'm sure some of the more embarrassing ones have been archived by Google groups for all to see. :)

Sounds just like my parents. ;)

And my parents, although they did take me to see ANH when I was an infant. They were in town this past week, so we went to see ROTS(first time for them). I know how you feel Pabawan. If anyone cares to read about my parents and the movie, click below.

father's day was one of the best viewings - (that was #11 for me) totally packed theater, elbow to elbow with strangers again but it's all good. the theater was rocking, total immersion, laughter, shock, crying - great. when grevious finally went down - the girl next to me said, louder that she intended i think, "he's going to get up! he's going to get back up!!!", when he didn't she said "whoops" and everyone had fun with that. everyone loves R2D2, kids and adults so appreciated the little guy - i could hear it all around me. lots of gasps at the action on mustafar and "wow" at the first glimpse of the environment. as the credits came on the big topic was, it's not really over, is it??

i stayed through the credits, i always do because it's star wars and it's john williams and i always need that time. i wasn't alone last sunday, about a dozen others stayed too. last night i approached the manager about digital ( two weeks ago i had to drive 3 hours away to see it the 2 times i saw it in digital). we had a pleasant argument/discussion - he finally decided to take me up to the projection floor..my first job ever was concession at a theater and i used to spend my breaks up in the projection booth because it was so cool. now it's an entire floor - with multiplex concept. very sterile and dark.

mgr said equipment was over 50 years old - i asked why owners wouldn't invest in digital since they weren't shy about increasing prices. said they just replace innards w. new pieces, & update w. computers. i gripe everytime i attend - i've gone to 6 diff theaters to find the best. course digital blows everybody else out of the water - so much clarity - so dang exciting plus the SOUND! i could hear pearls i could see the clumps of dirt-could almost feel them- when boga came to that abrupt stop w. obiwan, who's your daddy posters were given out sporadically at both theaters i went to - you had to ask for them.brought one of mine to work for the 5 year old son of a co-worker who wants to, a direct quote, grow up to be george lucas.
