Turns Out, I'm a Wikipedian

Time to come out of this user-generated closet and admit that yeah, I've dabbled in the world of wikis. All strictly professional, of course. Uh huh. Pure research. Yeah, that's it. Not that I enjoy being a fact-obsessed minutia-absorbing fanboy or anything.... of course not.

No, it's not Wookieepedia, since there's a variety of reasons I can't go into that playground as someone on the official side of things. I try to avoid it, though from what I've seen it's pretty darn impressive. In Memory Alpha, the Star Trek wiki, I get to delve deeper, but the one I dig the most is Teletraan-1, the Transformers wiki.

There are plenty of reasons as a TransFan to dig it, but what I particularly like is its absolute disregard to neutral voice. It never pretends to be anything officials and in fact, gets a bit bawdy in some of its language - especially its often-hilarious captions. The site's actually quite funny to read, particularly entries such as

Pat Lee
Dull surprise
the Sun (funny only to TMBG fans)
Kibble
Flykick (awesome captions)
Wheelie

I think the fans behind Teletraan recognize just how irreconcilable most Transformers continuity is, and try not to sweat inconsistencies or incongruities and just roll with it. That, I can appreciate. It's got the perfect mix of retentive detail and irreverence.

So, I'm Infinata in that community, and my beat is a lot of G1 material. Say hi if we ever run into each other.

date Posted: Jan 30, 2007 12:55 AM I know nothing about Transformers, but I would love to inject some humor into the Wookiee. I don't think it would go over well, but there is an entry on Pants, so maybe I can dare to hope. (Okay, it's a slim hope. I cling to it anyway.) PANTS!

date Posted: Jan 30, 2007 1:22 AM I don't understand why you have to refrain from Wookieepedia. I didn't know there even was a Transformers wiki, that's awesome. I would totally support more humor for Wookieepedia. Not so much as to be silly, but I certainly wouldn't object to funny stuff. BTW, I'm a big TMBG fan.

I've become a Wookieepedian, myself, though I didn't really intend to be. It's the only Wiki I've actually edited. I can't help myself when I read an inconsistency. I've been especially active in fixing many Rebel pilot articles. And when I discovered that someone had created an article about me, well, I even edited that one!

And Transformers continuity really is an incredibly confusing mess!

As much as I loved the animated series, the action figures, and the comics - and most of all the cool sound they made when they transformed themselves into cars, fighterplanes, and boom boxes (my favorite concept) - I really have a bad feeling about the movie. I'm really afraid it's going to suck big time. There are just some concepts that that don�t go together well with the movie media. I really fear that's gonna be the case with Transformers.

That Wheelie article is *awesome*. The painful rhymes are dead-on.

Actually, that seems to be an interesting theme to the articles - a lot aren't NPOV, but rather from the point of view of the character in question. Wheelie's article rhymes like Wheelie was telling it, Sky Lynx is written with his characteristic arrogance, and Perceptor's article appears to be in the process of becoming suitably obfuscatory.

Reading some of those almost makes me regret our more stringent NPOV standards at the Wook.

date Posted: Feb 01, 2007 10:17 AM Incidentally, as far as the Transformers wiki goes, isn't this Japanese "Kiss Players" thing creepy, disturbing and possibly perverted? The entry for the Shaoshao Li character includes some things that are just wrong. This is the first place I heard of it. JMM

date Posted: Feb 01, 2007 3:53 PM Heh. I've been poking around the Teletraan-1 for a couple of months now. I've captioned a few of the pictures that I felt needed something. Sometimes they stick and sometimes they get replaced. I go there for a mix of information and humor. My reading this was directed from one of the moderators of that wiki.
