What's in a Name?
I was born in the mid-70s. Growing up in Canada, I knew a few Jennifers my age, but not an inordinate amount. Not enough to strike me as odd.

It wasn't until I moved to the States in 2000 that I bumped into Jennifers my age everywhere I went, and quite often, they were lamenting the commonness of their name. They went through a number of spelling gymnastics in an effort to be unique, dropping an 'n', changing the "I" for a "Y" or substitution "ph" for "f". Clearly, there was a lot of resentment of their parents for the choice of their name.

I had heard anecdotally the reason for the preponderance of Jennifers in the 1970s - supposedly, it all traced back to the incredibly popular success of the movie Love Story. I kind of dismissed it, thinking there really couldn't have been that many moms and moms-to-be affected by that movie, but looking at the Social Security Administration's website that tracks popular baby names by year, the evidence is hard to dismiss. From 1970 - 1984, a whopping 14-year run, Jennifer was the most popular girl's name. That's quite the rise from when it first appeared on the top 1000 charts in 1938.

So, we all know Star Wars is popular. But are people naming their babies after it?

* In 1978 the name "Leia" broke the top 1000, appearing at 910. It disappeared for a year, but then returned in 1980 at 923.

* Luke's always been a popular name. It first places on the top 1000 in 1906, at 261, and stays on the charts for decades - its lowest ebb is 614 in 1942. Did Star Wars give it a boost? In 1976, it ranked 223. In 1977, it jumped up to 190. By the time Empire came out in 1980, it was up to 97. Nowadays, Luke is a very popular name. In 2005, it ranked 41.

* Han has never been in the top 1000 names in the last 100 years. But in the last 30 years, Harrison has risen from 970 to 211.

Other curiosities of pop culture:

* In 1994, Americans started naming their babies Keanu, with it being the 755th most popular baby name. It's made the top 1000 ever since.

* From 1998 to 1999, Britney jumped from 450 to 204. It's been dropping steadily since 2002.

* In 2001, Beyonce was the 702nd most popular female baby name.

* Logan was the 999th popular boy's name in 1973. By 1991, it was the 94th. By 2001, it was 29th.

* Pre-Titanic, Rose was 379 and 393 in 1995-1996. In 1998 and 1999, it jumped up to 297 and 278 respectively,

* People stopped naming their kid Bart in 1987. Homer dropped from the top 1000 in 1983. Marge disappeared in 1947, while Lisa continues to be a popular name, peaking at #1 from 1962-1969, when it was bumped the following year by Jennifer.

not surprising at all...Star Wars is myth for the modern age and folks are inspired to name the people most precious to them after the "gods and goddesses".

Star Wars has proved its longevity.......so after the demise in popularity of a Beyonce, we'll still be seeing younglings named Luke and Leia......actually I've even seen quite a few Anakins and Haydens.

it's a mutual honor, the way I see it.

and Homer may have had something to do with a different myth..and it would be Greek

I've a baby due in May - if its a girl we're going with Brianna Willow (Willow being from Buffy) and if its a boy its gonna be Lucas. My girlfriend chose Lucas and not being a SW fan didn't know why i was so happy about it until a friend told her. I did say that we should have my grandads name as the boys middle name like my dad and i have - its kinda tradition - but she said a big firm no. I don't really see whats wrong with my grandad George's name!

Huh -- never knew that about Jennifer. Explains a lot!

And thank you for giving me all the reason I need for putting the kibosh on ever naming a kid Rose.

I've often said that if my son had been born in '77 instead of '76. he would would have been named "Lucas" and called "Luke"...

But I've had to settle for naming my latest cat Obi-Wan Katnobi....B-)

How are other Space Operas faring in the child-naming area?

Kids named Zoe, Washburn, Mal, or River?

Any Scotties, Tiberius', or Jean-Lucs? Khans?

Appollos? Anybody with the last name of "Frak"? It could be a German name...

Interesting Blog! My name is the "boys" equivalant of Jennifer, there were many Jason's in my childhood. I like it because it's Greek, and so am I, and Superman's son is named Jason, and there's also Jacen Solo.

When we named our daughter Lily in 2003, I really hadn't heard of many Lily's out there. Now they're everywhere. Not sure what triggered the flood, though.

I'm pregnant with my second child (gender unknown) right now, and I would love to name a baby girl Leia. Unfortunately, my husband--who doesn't care about Star Wars--would never agree! Our first child has a little friend named Luke, and the first thing his father said to him after he was born was, "Luke, I am your father!" :^O

Lily Potter, maybe?

Our favorite movies really do influence our name choices, don't they? I so see a Luke and perhaps a Kailey in my future.:D

Lily's slowly been growing in popularity since 1979, when it was the 966th most popular name. By 1992, it had reached 471st. In 2002, it broke the top 100 at 79. In 2003, it reached 69. Right now it's 39th. Don't know what's causing this increase, but it's steady.

HA HA! I did one of these blogs a few weeks ago, possibly giving it the same title.

Logan is my daughter's name and no it was not for Logan's Run as some have asked. :)

I knew a few poeple named after Star Wars characters.

The meanest name I've ever come across was a girl I went to school with. Are you ready? April May June

Lily Potter, maybe?
I doubt it. If the Potter franchise made "Lily" popular, then I would have expected "Hermione" to be right up there too. But it hasn't even broken into the top 1000 yet.

Pablo, was Hermione Bagwa named after Hermione Granger?

If our first-born had been a boy, his name would have been "Luke", without a doubt (for my fav character! :x). Our Number One was a girl, and, although Leia is a beautiful name, there was another (non-SW :O) name we just loved.

We gave our oldest daughter the chance to name her baby sister, and, at only 3-1/2, she hadn't yet seen any SW movies. Both girls grew to be big SW fans, and, had #2 come along a little later, I think she would have been named something else.

We recently learned an acquaintenance's nephew is named "Anakin". Interestingly enough, his older sister (5 at the time) chose his name. Wow, what a moniker!

Fun blog! :D

while Lisa continues to be a popular name, peaking at #1 from 1962-1969,

Ugh, don't remind me! I was born in '68 and many of my classmates were named Lisa.... Need I say that my name is Lisa?

At one point, I had 5 very close friends named Lisa.... and one named Debbie. It was always so confusing when we went anywhere together...

If I had a son, I'd name him Luke in a heartbeat! Love that name. :x

I've got a non SW name for a girl, so she'd be outta luck. :p

Pablo, was Hermione Bagwa named after Hermione Granger?

I don't know that for a fact, Arf. I also know that there was at least one crew members for Episode I / II named Hermione, so that can't be discounted as a source, either.

Han, Luke, Leia, while these aren't exactly common, I'd say their pretty typical names...

I'll know the true effect of SW when I start seeing Chewie, Qui-Gon, and Jar Jar showing up on the list...
