Cliche Inventory: Just a Sample
This list isn't meant to be exhaustive. It's just a snapshot in time, but it is very telling. The year is 1981. You actively read every scrap of Star Wars you can get your hands on. The expanded universe -- heck, the whole universe, is only four years old.

Luke's a hotshot pilot, right? Well, check out how many times Luke has crashlanded:

1) an X-wing in the swamps of Mimban (Splinter of the Mind's Eye, 1978, Del Rey Books)
2) a Rebel ship on the unnamed jungle world occupied by the Keeper ("Dread Discoveries" Pizzazz #3, 1977 Marvel Comics)
3) the same Rebel ship in the frozen plains of Akura Two ("Kingdom of Ice" Pizzazz #10, 1978, Marvel Comics)
4) a Y-wing in the Pana system (The Star Wars Holiday Special, 1978, 20th Century Fox),
5) skyhopper, after Beggar's Canyon ("Crucible" Star Wars #17, 1978, Marvel Comics)
6) a small Corellian gunship-like transport, presumably, given the fire and debris seen after landing ("Doom Mission!" Star Wars #25, 1979, Marvel Comics)
7) his X-wing fighter, the day after the Battle of Yavin ("The Day After The Death Star!" Star Wars Weekly #97-98, 1980, Marvel Comics UK)
8) the Staraker experimental scout cruiser into Alashan ("World of Fire" Star Wars Weekly #100-102, 1980 Marvel Comics UK)
9) a captured and sabotaged TIE fighter in the Junction asteroid corridor ("Thunder in the Stars!" Star Wars #34, 1980 Marvel Comics)
10) his snowspeeder, during the Battle of Hoth
11) his X-wing, into the swamps of Dagobah (Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, 1980, Lucasfilm Ltd.)
12) his X-wing on Ota ("The Frozen World of Ota" Star Wars newspaper strips, 1980, L.A. Times Syndicate)
13) a drone barge on the world of the Serpent Masters, though this one wasn't really his fault ("The Serpent Masters" Star Wars newspaper strips, 1981, L.A. Times Syndicate)
14) his X-wing on Lapez 3 while under the mental influence of Reist, the nightmare demon ("Death-Masque!" Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back #149 (1981, Marvel UK).
15) crashes on Jerne when harassed by Imperial TIE fighters ("Dark Lord's Devilry" Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back #153, 1981, Marvel Comics UK)

Yikes. Never fly anywhere with Luke! Likewise, avoid standing too close to Leia. Again, this is just from the first four years of Star Wars, but look how many times she's been captured:

1) By Imperials aboard her consular ship (Star Wars, 1977 Lucasfilm Ltd.)
2) By Imperials on Akuria Two ("War on Ice" Pizzazz, 1978, Marvel Comics),
3) by Imperials on Mimban (Splinter of the Mind's Eye, 1978 Del Rey Books)
4) By Crimson Jack ("Star Search!" Star Wars #11 1978, Marvel Comics)
5) By Governor Quarg ("The Sound of Armageddon!" Star Wars #14 1978, Marvel Comics)
6) By Wheel security ("The Ultimate Gamble!" Star Wars #19, 1979, Marvel Comics)
7) by Senator Simon Greyshade ("To The Last Gladiator!" Star Wars #22 (1979, Marvel Comics)
8) by Blackhole stormtroopers ("Gambler's World" Star Wars daily newspaper strips, 1979, L.A. Times Syndicate)
9) kidnapped by Freelies ("Gambler's World" Star Wars daily newspaper strips, 1979, L.A. Times Syndicate)
10) by the S'kytri, along with Luke ("The Long Hunt" Star Wars Annual #1, 1979 Marvel Comics)
11) by megonite moss miners on Phelarion ("Princess Leia: Imperial Servant" Star Wars newspaper strips, 1979 L.A. Times Syndicate)
12) kidnappers Kiros and Zon Zorad ("As Long As We Live..." Star Wars newspaper strips, 1980 L.A. Times Syndicate)
13) by stormtroopers on Cloud City (Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, 1980 Lucasfilm Ltd.)
14) kidnapped by the bounty hunter Skorr ("The Bounty Hunter of Ord Mantell" Star Wars newspaper strips, 1981 L.A. Times Syndicate)
15) held captive by the Five ("The Pandora Effect" Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back #151 (1981, Marvel Comics UK)
16) held captive by Imperials on Jerne ("Dark Lord's Devilry" Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back #153 (1981, Marvel Comics UK)
17) held captive by guerilla insurgents on Jerne ("Dark Lord's Devilry" Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back #153 (1981, Marvel Comics UK)
18) by General S'kar's giant stormtroopers ("Last Gift from Alderaan" Star Wars #53 (1981, Marvel Comics)

They've been caught more times than Chewbacca has with his hand in the Wookie jar. I mean cookie jar.

Realisticly, they should have been killed before Episode V, where Luke crashlands twice and Leia is taken captive again. Ah, the stormtrooper effect... they simply can't die until the plot requiers it.

Now just imagine being the Rebel FAA agent assigned to document and catalog the debris from all of Luke's crashes...
