With all the noise and online activity, it's sometimes easy to lose track of what happened when, so here's what may or may not become a weekly recap of Hyperspace (and other Lucas Online) activity that you may have missed.
The biggest news was kept entirely offline -- Lucas Online (along with the rest of Lucasfilm) finally moved into new office space at the gorgeous Letterman Digital Arts Center at the Presidio, San Francisco. So while we were unpacking our offices and getting settled, we still found time to share some cool exclusives with Fan Club members this week.
The coolest? Without a doubt, the
ILM Siggraph Reel. Originally shown at the
SIGGRAPH conference this past August, the reel deconstructs a number of ILM's amazing visual effect shots for Episode III. Highlights include:
- Examples of how seemlessly the Generals' Quarters set was blended with digital set extensions
- Before-and-after comparisons of digital head replacements for Count Dooku (Kyle Rowling) and Palpatine (Michael Byrne) stunt doubles
- Shots of the Mustafar miniature in action
- ILM's new logo!
Also this week, AudioCast presents the
entire audio track to Star Tours! That's Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman) playing your hapless droid pilot, Rex. This is a treat because the ride is so intense, those trying to take notes rarely get a chance to, so now you can appreciate the full audio and listen to little cues and story-points. Also, is it just me, or does that opening music remind anyone of
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine?
Fiction updated this week with a reprint of
To Fight Another Day. It's written by Kathy Tyers, New York Times Bestselling author who also penned
The Truce at Bakura and
Balance Point. To Fight Another Day follows the story of Tinian I'att, an armanent heiress pushed into fighting the Empire. Tyers first created this character in the story
Tinian on Trial (reprinted in Hyperspace last year). For those who read Tyers' story in
Tales of the Bounty Hunters and have always wondered where Tinian and Chenlambec came from, these are the stories. In fact, this story has the first appearance of Chenlambec. To Fight Another Day was originally first printed in the
Star Wars Adventure Journal #6, in May of 1995. It features artwork by Mike Vilardi, presented in color for the first time.
This week's edition of
Bantha Tracks Online goes to New York, for Fashion Week, and features snapshots from Trisha Biggar's "Dressing the Galaxy: The Costumes of Star Wars" exhibit. Fan costumer Kristin Mrozek got to meet her idol Trisha, and present her with an honory membership in the Rebel Legion costuming club. And make sure to note that Bantha Tracks has a new snail mail address.
The
Episode III Set Diaries continue to run through the film in sequential order, giving insight into production and comparisons to the shooting script. Find out what the revolving set was originally planned for and how much actually ended up in the film. Also, there's a look inside one of the DVD deleted scenes: "A Plot Against the Jedi?" Be sure to click on the picture viewer so that you can see some screen shots from this scene. As a bonus, get a look at an experiment that Rob Coleman's animation team did to get a handle on the new Yoda model. They went and replaced some of the puppet footage from Episode I with the new digital Yoda. It's slide #9.
This week's
What's The Story is Melee, the little girl of little faith when it comes to Anakin's Podracing ability. It's okay, Melee. I would have bet against him too.
In image series news, it was a prequel week for
Galactic Gallery. See Kurt Kaufman's sketches of the
T-14 hyperdrive generator from Episode I, a mood painting to capture lighting of
Dooku's escape in Episode II, and Ryan Church's establishing painting of the
Jedi Embarkation Platform from Episode III. Fantastic sense of scale in that last one.
Photoreceptor added a Star Destroyer
under construction -- complete with model kits being bashed -- and a rare shot of
Cliff Claven on the set of
The Empire Strikes Back.
On the
webstrip front: Ekria, Zonder and Drake are reunited in their escape from clone troopers, but Drake may have gone too far with his public display of Force in
Reversal of Fortune; Saboteur Mag Doum escapes Arda-2 and calls Darth Vader in
As Long As We Live; Luke and Tanith Shire part ways. Skywalker is reunited with Princess Leia as the Empire attacks the neutral world of Kabal in
Deadly Reunion; and in what is probably one of the most oddball
Star Wars stories told, and Imperial officer (who's also a lizard with no pants) rounds up innocent women and children to blast, while Luke and Han scale an Epcott-center lookalike in order to stop this guy, in
Bring Me The Children.
