How Good or Bad were Movies This Year?
So what do critics know? Well, actually, quite a bit.

I enjoy the Rotten Tomatoes site, because it acts as a great normalizer. For every ax-grinding anti-fan elitist sourpuss, there's a fervant unapologetic gusher/suspect corporate lackey, thus cancelling out both extremes. Then the more mainstream critics chime in, often painting an accurate picture as to whether a movie is worth the cost of admission.

So, with the claim in mind that movies are worse than ever before, I thought I'd take a look at the year's major releases, and see what scored what. The process debunked a few myths, like the argument that critics hate anything popular like a mass-appeal block buster.

Hardly. Look at the most well-reviewed movies this year. Blockbusters are well represented in those ranks. And the critically acclaimed limited release Crash only scored 77%, much less than a raunchy comedy about virginity, that turned out to be one of the most well-reviewed movies of the year.

So, here are the letter grades for the major releases of this year so far, compiled from Rotten Tomatoes. I wonder if the median score is getting higher or lower each year...

Disclaimer: The middle of the spectrum gets really fuzzy, because the percentile only represents a movie's ability to please a lot of people. A substantive, quality film with a contentious message could split the audience, driving its total numbers down. However, the 80-100% and the 0-30% are probably very accurate assessment of the movie's quality.
