Star Wars Rookies: Coming Next Week
I've just completed inking the "splash" art for Rookies, the color cover that will appear on the Webstrip index page. The strip isn't due out until next week. The art for the splash has yet to be approved, but the first ten strips have been approved. As of today, I've got three weeks completed. That means I'm two weeks behind where I wanted to be, but who could have predicted January would have been filled with the one-two punch of strep throat and diverticulitis. Yeah, I know, too much information, but after having all of fandom read about a kidney infection I had two and a half years ago, so much for privacy.

But, enough excuses. This thing is gonna happen, one way or another. Here are some answers to a few questions asked regarding the strip.

- It is set during the original trilogy.
- It's not really an adaptation, but at the same time, it's not 100 percent an original story
- If popular, it may be a continuing series; consider this first story arc a "pilot."
- There's at least one Squib in it, with the potential for more.
- It digs up a lot of old EU that no one feels like touching these days. ;)
- It is free of Killiks.
- In a risky move, there are no lightsabers in this story!

I hope you like it when it debuts, and if there's interest, I may use my blog as a springboard for discussion about the strip.

Whoa! Diverticulitis...ugh. My friend is having ongoing issues with that too and a heart scare! Hope you feel better and aren't in too much pain. :(

I look forward to them for sure!

Good to see you back.

Star Wars is more than lightsabers. I don't believe they are required in every story....and they certainly aren't needed in Empire-era stories (if only Galaxies could have understood that)...you can have good Star Wars without them and many of the main heroes never use them anyway.

SilverForce, I totally agree. I try to steer clear of Lightsabers in stories wherever I can because Jedi characters, or anyone with a sabre, just becomes too powerful, they take the story away from the 'normal humans' on the ground.
Perhaps that's why the original trilogy was better regarded than the Prequels. In the newer flicks, practically everyone you had to root for was a Jedi. In the originals you had a smuggler, his sidekick, a gambler and scoundrel and a Princess to follow - and no Lightsabres or Force powers in sight (apart from Ben, Yoda, Darth, Palps and Luke)
Keep 'em out Pabs, your story will be all the better for it.
(BTW, yeah, I know, my site is called Lightsabre...)

It is free of Killiks

Bugs, I hate Bugs... Han Solo..

Is it a Solo project?
I could really use some Fett or Falcon action..
I can't wait to check it out..
..Thanks,

No lightsabers... Original Trilogy... Rookies... The emphasis on the word "Pilot" perhaps non-coincidental?

A story of the Rebels replacing the pilots lost at the Battle of Yavin?

...or possibly connected to the video game Rebel Assault, which starred a Rebel pilot named Rookie One (implying a squadron). I'd consider that EU nobody really wants to touch nowadays.

Oooh I think CooperTFN's on a winner there. I never thought of that, but yeah it seems quite obvious now :)

We'll finally get to know his actual name!

Looking forward to it Pablo!

The end of Ghent's "Recruitment" kind of took me by surprise - glad to hear another original strip is on the way!

Yeah I still think it is a rebel assault canon-izing as well. I suggested that back in the other blog he posted about this in his comments. Rookies and pilot quoted, no lightsabers, sketchy EU, it just screams rebel assault to me. I just hope it doesn't tread all over my star wars fan comic which also deals with rebel assault canon at http://www.fandom.swnsu.com :T Otherwise I might have to start making some plot changes.

Nice to see Skorr in the mix there. Fitting, since they recently did a webstrip that had Skorr in it from the archie goodwin days, I think it was. Curious where this one is headed.

Star Wars clothing references? ;)

AFAIK, this is one of the first sources to reference a SW t-shirt into continuity. (Check out the Stormie and Cross-bones poster in Rookies 1...)

Is this an already existing story? The narration sounds like it could be from an RPG scenario or something....
