 | Rookies: Rendezvous, Week One Annotations |
Monday - Strip 1: Strip 5 reveals this to be Ord Mantell. I imagine it to be somewhere in the depths of the older cities, the less glitzy and glam areas of the planet. The script described this setting as some forgotten thoroughfare, like an abandoned subway tunnel or similar.
There's chainlink fence in the background, capped with razor concertina -- which I personally really don't think would exist as any form of structural deterrant in the Star Wars galaxy, though I'm sure there's an older comic somewhere that uses it. Since this is an old decrepit part of a city's infrastructure, then it's not supposed to have any sort of modern security. The reason I used it is because it very quickly establishes a "no trespassing" vibe.
I don't know what the little furry vermin is.
And yes, that's a Star Wars t-shirt graphic on the wall. It just seemed like an edgy addition that said abandoned urban decay to me.
The narration is from the running female fugitive, who we'll get to know later. As well as whatever it is she's carrying in her hand.
And yep, that's Skorr and Bossk teamed together.
Tuesday - Strip 2 The battered sign on the chainlink fence isn't really Aurebesh. It just looks like it. It says "CAUTION: NO TRESSPASSING."
So, this causeway isn't entirely forgotten, since there's a light over a doorway on in the background.
And our fugitive sure is agile...
Wednesday - Strip 3 Rather than take an easy shortcut, she takes a long way -- the CAUTION sign warning of some sort of fire hazard is enough to spook her.
Thursday - Strip 4 Bossk isn't terribly eloquent. The fugitive dives into a massive hole in the pavement that opens up into some underground water duct.
Friday - Strip 5 It's Ord Mantell. And she's stolen something from Skorr and made an enemy. Skorr's a territorial one, ain't he? And I imagine that water doesn't smell that great.
And though I don't think Bossk has always been depicted with sibilant speech, I couldn't help it. It just seems to fit his look.

I totally missed the T-Shirt graphic even though I own that shirt. So that alone makes the price of admission to this blog worth it. Neat!
What do you mean you didn't charge me?

'And though I don't think Bossk has always been depicted with sibilant speech, I couldn't help it. It just seems to fit his look.'
Yep.
There's precedent, too: Bossk speaks like that in Underworld, Galactic Battlegrounds, and probably a couple of other sources I'm forgetting. Other Trandoshans have been known to do it too (Ssoh in Chewbacca, etc.)

"Impressive... most impressive."
Looks great! I love the commentary! It helped me notice a lot of things I missed before. Of course, I'm not visual.

Your webstrip is off to a fabulous start, I love how it starts with a chase scene. I'm hooked already. And strip #6 with that dynamic perspective shot of the X-Wing and the SD is awesome

Thanks Joe. You know, it didn't originally begin with a chase, when I sent my first outline in. But thanks to some helpful editorial tips from Sue Rostoni, I reworked my outline, and this new beginning was one of the consequences.

Gasp, an X-Wing?!
my guess at what the strip would be about in your last blog was...
"A story of the Rebels replacing the pilots lost at the Battle of Yavin?"
I suppose thatt still might not be far off from the truth? Oh well, it's good to see an X-Wing under any context.
And Bossk.

Possible Spoiler!
The identity of the Xwing Pilot is very likely Tiree. Deo is his R2 droid R2-D0. Tiree is also known as Gold 2 during the Battle of Yavin, though apparently there were two Tiree's in the alliance, this being the other one. Since Tiree has an Xwing, im guessing Pablo is doing the story of the game chambers of Questal, or perhaps detailing his adventures in Bothan space?
Or this could possibly take place after the game chambers, and detail his later adventures! he's no rookie one, but hey, Tiree is sweet!

Wooo, I was right there. Barezz clinches it. That was the ISB officer who had an obsession with capturing Tiree! So this could be the story of the game chambers of questal, or it could be some other adventure involving the Tiree vs Barezz ongoing cat and mouse game!

Sounds like you're right about Tiree from what I can tell. I believe a Star Wars Gamer article revealed that Tiree is an alias of Tay Vanis, a Rebel spy character seen in the Marvel Comics series. I assume Pablo knows this, so maybe we'll see a Marvel reference or two in here, as well.
