The Geek Shall Inherit
How representative is the Internet of the world at large? If it were frozen today, and resurrected by a society far in the future, would they have an accurate picture of what our world is?

I imagine they would think we had a very peculiar skew in interests. Since geeks helped birth and nurture the Internet, it's not surprising to see us overly represented online, but some searches around the web reveal just how unbalanced this representation is.

For example, the King Constantine I of Greece merits 717 words of elucidation in his Wikipedia entry.

Hordak, the evil villain who often plagued He-Man and She-Ra, earns 2,339 words.

Does that seem odd? Here's something else. Take the imdb listings of "memorable quotes" for these unequaled movie milestones:

Sunset Blvd.
# of memorable quotes: 30

Chinatown
# of memorable quotes: 35

Dr. Strangelove
# of memorable quotes: 39

Citizen Kane:
# of memorable quotes: 44

Lawrence of Arabia
# of memorable quotes: 52

The Godfather
# of memorable quotes: 54

Casablanca
# of memorable quotes: 69

Now, compare them to these fan-centric geek-pleasing films:

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
# of memorable quotes: 74

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
# of memorable quotes: 80

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
# of memorable quotes: 80

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
# of memorable quotes: 86

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
# of memorable quotes: 87

Transformers: The Movie
# of memorable quotes: 101

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
# of memorable quotes: 104

Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
# of memorable quotes: 105

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
# of memorable quotes: 105

Star Wars: A New Hope
# of memorable quotes: 114

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
# of memorable quotes: 123

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
# of memorable quotes: 134

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
# of memorable quotes: 141

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
# of memorable quotes: 165

Those movie quotes are memorable... especially if you only watch the same movies over and over and over again. :)

In defense of geeks, why should those 'classic' movies deserve more weight than the more recent 'geeky' movies? Each generation shouldn't be enslaved to their parents and grandparents tastes. Not that there's anything wrong with Casablanca, but geeks shouldn't feel bad about loving the Transformers movie. Embrace your culture!

I loved MOTU when I was a kid. It was always choosing between SW and MOTU. I almost had all the toys, except for a few items that were never released in Belgium. And yep, I did have the Eternia playset as well :) Those were the days. It sure brings back memories ...
