Cars: More Great Stuff from Pixar
There were some early newsbreaks about how Cars was recieving lukewarm reviews from critics, but let's gain some perspective here. A mediocre Pixar movie -- if there can be said to be such a thing -- tends to be a dozen times better than what passes for "good" from the Hollywood mill. Cars is great. Is it perfect? No, but it's flaws are so easily overlooked for the undeniable magic Pixar is able to achieve.

The cynic in me makes me believe that the entertainment press, so eager to take down a winner, wanted to pounce on Pixar especially after the big Disney deal that went down last year. And then there's the even more parasitic-sublevel of entertainment press -- the press that reports on the press, that is proportionately bloodthirsty as it is irrelevant.

The biggest flaw the movie can be accused of is that it's over-long. There's a stretch in the middle that lasts longer than it should, and the movie loses momentum. But the last acts are so exhilarating and so rewarding that you forgive the slow stretch. You leave the theater feeling good, happy about the time and care you've invested in the characters, and that the artists at Pixar spent in creating this work of art.

And the slow stretch is done to build character. Now, when's the last time a summer movie could be faulted for spending too much time building character? Compare to, oh, Chicken Little, where so much energy was invested in awful jokes that tried so desperately to be timely and hip. Cars has the kind of flaw you can live with.

I won't get into too many details, other than say that the movie is adorable, that the Pixar magic that makes you care for ordinarily inanimate objects is there, and it has charm to spare. Where does it rank among Pixar's past works?

In my opinion...

1) Toy Story 2
2) The Incredibles
3) Toy Story
4) Cars
5) Finding Nemo
6) Monsters, Inc.
7) A Bug's Life

I've loved everything this company has put out. You did miss the #1 Pixar creation, though. The short (included with the Monsters Inc. DVD) with the birds (don't recall the title)....funniest animation ever...

As a side note, I saw a commercial for the Cars soundtrack today. They say it's the "roadtrip collection." Then they say "score by Randy Newman." Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but I'm a Family Guy fan. For any other FG fans, you'll know what I mean when I say all I could think of is "Left Foot, right foot, left foot, right foot."

For those who AREN"T fans of Family Guy, WHAT"S WRONG WITH YOU!??!?!? ;)

Looking forward to Cars (if I hadn't said)...

I'm absolutely sick of new kids movies relying on #### JOKES all the time... Their best was Monsters Inc. though.

Oh, it seems I'm not allowed to say f a r t here and yet kids movies use it all the time, another perfect example.

I saw Cars yesterday and LOVED it! It's really excellent! I agree that it has a small section where it drags ever so slightly in the middle (for kids). I was find with it actually, but my Padawan got a little restless in the middle.

My #1 Pixar movie is Finding Nemo!! Mine! Mine! Mine! ;)

my Padawan got a little restless in the middle.

Mine, too.... but when a good song came on he'd get up and shake his little bootie...

I loved Toy Story, 1& 2, and Monster, Inc.

2. Toy Story
3. Finding Nemo
4. Incredibles
5. Cars
6. Monsters inc.

better than Finding Nemo, eh?
I just may have to go see it.... are there any VW Beetles in it?

To be honest, I'm more excited about the 2007 Pixar film:

Thanks Pabs!

Once again I agree with you 100% about Chicken Little. Sad since it had so much potential, and if you ignore some of the "timely wannabe-hip jokes" and focus on the space invasion part it was pretty cool.

For me Pixars films go in this order (from best to worst):

1) Incredibles
2) Toy Story 2
3) Finding Nemo
4) Toy Story
5) Monsters Inc
6) Bugs Life
?) Cars (I have not seen it yet)

Call me shallow, but even with a company that is as magical and quality-proven as Pixar, I'm just no interested in watching a 2hour Chevron commercial.

The Incredibles would rate as my number one Pixar pic, and I've seen 'em all save for Toy Story 2.
