 | There's a reason for that... |
Reading through my old Marvel comics, I found this letter rather amusing. It appears in Star Wars #24, published June 1979...
Dear Archie,
I love, love, love what you are doing with the STAR WARS series, but may I offer one small criticism? I feel that one of the most charming aspects of the original movie's ending was the sweet affection between Luke and Princess Leia. However, in your comic series they act more like brother and sister than sweethearts. I know you can't do anything that would conflict with the upcoming sequel, but since it has already been clearly established that Luke and Leia are in love, I don't think it would spoil anything that will be shown in the sequel if you gave a little more emphasis to the romance between them in future Marvel installments. I'm sure many other STAR WARS fans would agree and be pleased to see this too. Keep up the excellent work.

Now, see, if that letter had been from WEST Virginia, I'm told that the reason you allude to wouldn't have mattered quite so much.

Ha! Thats hilarious. Wouldn't you've liked to see her face after ROTJ. Thanks for sharing your find. I was just looking through my comics last night trying to find my four issues of vintage SW comics. They're good for a laugh.
*On a side note* In my last blog I have a link showing the Vader autograph I spoke of in my first blog. BTW it was cool seeing who the guy was, in a imagination crushing sort of way. Hmm, on second thought....

I've noticed on occasion that there are a lot of funny letters along those lines. Sometimes, the responses from the editors are just as funny, since they really don't know what's coming either. I'm sure there's lots of fun continuity silliness in those letter pages. Might be a fun compilation for someone to put together.

Hey, her letter was valid... from a certain point of view. I've been re-reading a lot of the EU novels, and in Before the Storm there's a quote that Yoda had been living on Dagobah for a hundred years when Luke discovered him in ESB. Even the people paid by LFL get it wrong sometimes! (...but not pabawan )

it has already been clearly established that Luke and Leia are in love
She was right, though, one of the trailers states it explicitly. "In danger. In love. In STAR WARS."

My Grandfather was from West Virginia, Let's keep the comments at StarTrek or Babylon 5 or something like that, okay?
And before anyone writes anything, what would you be touchy about?

The only love between leia and luke were hinted at in the trailers. Nothing really happened in the epi4 film except one kiis for luck where luke obviously enjoyed that a lot as the look in his eyes would suggest.
I found that article reflective of many opinions of that era. You only had one film out at that point and was an honest wuestion on her part haha. Seems ridiculous now knowing what we know.
I remember being veru surprised at han and leia getting extra friendly as I had assumed it would be Luke and Leia then.
of course I was only 11 when TESB came out, I mean what did I know about love then.

Great letter. I wish they had reprinted those in the A Long Time Ago trades, but alas, that's one of the perks of owning the originals I guess (that, and you're not bothered by those smug, inappropriate introductions.)
When you read those letters, especially if you had been around back then, it takes you back to the time when kids and young teens were so much less jaded and spoiled. How much more refreshing is it to read those old letters than all of the vitriolic bile we're forced to wade through on some of the online forums!

Please keep posting these old school letters! I can't wait to read the retro letter from a fan asking if Ben was really Luke's father.

there WERE hints of Luke & Leia's budding "romance" in the first EU novel, "Splinter Of The MInds Eye."
While ist a great book, they got SO much stuff wrong, in retrospect, and its pretty cringeworthy everytime the book makes some mention of how Leia would make Luke have funny feelings inside...at one point he's eyeing her up in a tight fitting uniform covered in MUD...yikes!
I do remember the editors at Marvel commenting on how they were NOT allowed to do a lot of stuff due to Lucasfilm restrictions...now we all know WHY.
